All respect to Mr. Cocker, but as much as I love his new album, that one line is driving me nuts..."I know from not where." He's English! Did he misuse the grammar so badly on purpose? I Googled the phrase, and it only shows up in that song. Wouldn't "I know not from where" have worked just as well?

No. "I know not from where" makes no sense and though ''I know from not where" might take a couple of listens to catch properly, it does scan better.

I know what you mean Josta, "I know not" does make grammatical sense but "I know from not" doesn't. (At least I don't *think* so.) However, after spending the last five minutes going over them both, I've discovered that the "I know not" version is a little easier to get muddled up on when you're singing it


The line really annoys me too, so you're not the only one


Still, it's a good song overall so I'll forgive it.

I've discovered that the "I know not" version is a little easier to get muddled up on when you're singing it
I think it's to do with the accent of the beat. In normal speech "I know not from where" makes more sense than "I know from not where". However, "not" is a stronger sounding word than "from" so it's easier to have it stressed.... "Evil comes... I know. from. NOT. where-re..."


Because the album was released a week later than scheduled in Ireland I didn't actually get to hear it before the Koko gig; even so, I was doing my damndest to sing along. Unfortunately that meant that, probably influenced by Running The World, I was happily bellowing out "EVIL CUNNNNNTTTTSSS" during this song.

You aren't alone. I've been listening to the album for a while now but it was only today, when I was cheekily reading the lyrics to the song (hope Jarvis never visits this site!!) ;), that I realised that lyric is alot more innocent than I thought!
