Jarvis Cocker, Concorde 2, Brighton, Tues, 7 Nov

A secret gig from the eccentric former Pulp man, who is now following a solo career with a debut album - simply titled Jarvis - out next week.

Already critically acclaimed, it has been described as "widescreen rock, indie jangle, punk thrash and intimate ballads", lyrically "saturated" in today's fear culture.

The album follows an accomplished year which has seen him write songs for Nancy Sinatra, Marianne Faithfull and Charlotte Gainsbourgh, guest editing the Observer Music Monthly and writing music for Children Of Men and the next Harry Potter film.

Jarvis currently lives in Paris with his fashionista wife Camille Bidault-Waddington and son.

  • Starts 7.30pm, tickets £12. SOLD OUT.

So tonight begins a new chapter in Jarvis' career. Can anyone going sneak in their mp3recorder or post a review with  a set-list? Should be an interesting performance - Hawley said he spent 12 hours in rehearsals the other day (including Guinness and fag breaks presumably).

So did no one go then? The ever dependable Giles from acrylicafternoons.com did, I hope he doesn't mind me posting his little review of the night. I like the inference that a single will be released from the lp...and we're only missing Nick and Webbo from a full Pulp line-up! And not having heard the album, 'From A To I' has it's true title here - 'From Auschwitz to Ipswich'??

08.11.06 Jarvis Kicks Off Live Shows

Jarvis kicked off the first of his solo concerts last night, playing to a sold-out crowd at the Brighton Concorde. He was joined on stage by Richard Hawley (guitar), Steve Mackey (bass), Ross Orton (drums), Simon Stafford (keyboards and backing vocals) as well as an additional guitarist. Most of the tracks from his new LP were performed including an upcoming b-side called One Man Show and Big Stuff - a song he'd originally written for Lee Hazlewood.

Candida Doyle made a surprise appearance helping out on keyboards for From Auschwitz To Ipswich. Jarvis acknowledged he was nervous about the gig but was exceptionally chatty throughout, often talking about his new songs. Big Julie, for example, was about a girl Jarvis knew from Loughborough who'd developed breasts at the age of 12 - it was, he reckoned, 'a bit of a problem for her'. The set consisted of 12 songs and lasted 65 minutes. The setlist was: Fat Children, Don't Let Him Waste Your Time, Heavy Weather, One Man Show, I Will Kill Again, From Auschwitz To Ipswich, Tonite, Big Julie, Disney Time, Big Stuff, Black Magic, Cunts Are Still Running The World (encore).

Edit: And here's another I've found on the Brighton Argus site...

Jarvis, Concorde 2, Brighton, Tues Nov 7

    By Bella Todd

A stage barrier had been erected, towels and mineral water laid out with unusual attention, and a crowd of locals willing to take a chance on the phrase "very special secret gig" had been amassing since half seven.

But we didn't really start celebrating the return of Jarvis Cocker until the opening bars of the second song, when the lights came up on an oversized pair of black spectacles and a tight brown jacket missing half its buttons.

Now going solely by the name Jarvis and accompanied by a band which included Richard Hawley, the Britpop demigod debuted a full arsenal of literate, vaguely retro pop, from the schoolyard pathos of Big Julie to the This Is Hardcore-era motel atmospherics of B-side One Man Show.

A week before his official comeback and several years since Pulp's farewell gig, Cocker admitted to being nervous.

And, as he tested his limbs in a gangly little dance and revised those flicks of fringe, mic and wrist, the opening few songs were as precarious a marvel as watching baby foals on Attenborough struggle to their feet.

But come the parting political MySpace anthem C**** Are Still Running The World, Cocker was a fully-fledged pop star once more, juddering about the stage like an electrified newt in a badly supervised science detention.

"Do you reckon he'll play Common People or is it all gonna be French poetry?" buzzed one fan in the toilets beforehand.

    Well, neither.

For legends with less integrity, "the comeback" might mean falling back on past hits or wandering off into self-indulgent experiments. Jarvis has surpassed all precedents by daring, at 43, to begin again

I'd like to hear a proper live version of "Cunts...". I'm not crazy about all the strings and stuff on that track and always thought it would play better if it were stripped down to the bare essentials.

    Two songs I don't know?!?

Is it possible to hear them?

Do you think Jarvis will play some pulp songs live sometimes?

Absoloutely. The ropey version he put on youtube (when it took them 3 goes to get the song going) was evidence enough that it's natural home will be as the final encore song of any gig he's likely to do in future. Ballsy guitar and shouting the chorus to death live is going to suit it very well I imagine.
