i figured this would be the least promising of all the soundtrack and tribute material that came out this year. i think it's bloody fantastic. it turns into a crazy 7 minute jam.
Yeah, it's not bad... but my -pirated- mp3 of it sounds like it was recorded on a child's tape recorder. It's all distorted and fuzzy, and not in a pleasant way. Is that the way it's supposed to sound?
well, it's underproduced by pulp standards, but it's not meant to sound like a tenth generation analogue recording. i can upload my copy into the account if you want a cleaner version.
This song actually reminds me of a lesser track from Pablo Honey. It seems Jarv really does want to be a rocker now, especially if the Meltdown line-up is largely of his choice: Motorhead, Iggy...

i thought this sounded very Pablo Honey era radiohead too. It's not bad at all. i thought it was already in the account as I was sure that's where i got it!
Well I got it in the account, so it's definitely there. To be honest I didn't really intend the Pablo Honey reference to be a positive one, though one has to allow for the fact that there's a limited amount Jarvis could've done with that sort of traditional structure. This sort of "rocking out" is a worrying development, frankly:
"If I write a song I can't fall back on having a good voice or doing anything particularly interesting on the guitar so for me to make a song interesting or worth listening to... I kind of have to do something with the words, I think, because I haven't got the resources otherwise. "
The best Pulp material had great melodies, and arrangements that really coloured the lyrics well - if they ever resorted to "jamming" it was in a way that furthered the narrative (the oppressive groove of Sheffield: Sex City; the council estate corners and repetition of Deep Fried In Kelvin). Never before was it indulgent or muso.
It's time for the "Bring back Candida" campaign to kick into overdrive.

Where did you find that quote, it's a nice one and somes up Jarv's musicianship well. I think he has being sitting in his bedroom practicing his guitar technique in recent years as I noticed some considerable improvement around the latter days of Pulp.

no it's not one of Radiohead's strongest I know! It's nice to hear Jarvis' voice with that kinda sound tho.
It's from a nice interview with Jarvis, Richard Hawley and the kid from Arctic Monkeys, you can find it on Acrylic Afternoons easily enough. To me ...Nelson's Blood seems just a bit lacking in ideas, but maybe there's not a lot you can do with an old song like that. This Is The Night shows how Jonny Greenwood and Jarvis really could be a good combination - you can almost hear the former enjoying himself for the first time in music.
