Something that (quite rightly) doesn't seem to have been talked about much in the wake of all these reissues is what unreleased studio material is still in the vaults. From the 92-97 era that's been plundered for the His 'n' Hers, DC and Hardcore reissues, this is a list of the stuff I'm aware of that still hasn't been released:
OU SESSIONS, JANUARY 1992 OU (original mix) / Live On (demo) / Babies (demo)
ISLAND DEMO, MAY 1992 Razzmatazz / Happy Endings / Styloroc (backing track, later overdubbed with vocals and released) / Glass [AKA Your Sister's Clothes]
RAZZMATAZZ SESSION, OCTOBER 1992 Razzmatazz (original mix)
LE ROI DES FOURMIS SESSION, MAY 1993 Lipgloss (demo)
LIPGLOSS SESSIONS, JULY 1993 She's A Lady / Have You Seen Her Lately (original versions)
HIS AND HERS DEMOS, SEPTEMBER 1993 Joyriders / Do You Remember Your First Time? / David's Last Summer / ‘Razz II’ (‘Razz II’ was unfinished, and the song was scrapped)
HIS AND HERS SESSIONS, OCTOBER 1993-JAN 1994 Live On (unfinished version - possibly backing track only?)
DIFFERENT CLASS DEMOS, JUNE 1995 Mis-shapes / Sorted for E's and Wizz / Something Changed / F.E.E.L.I.N.G.C.A.L.L.E.D.L.O.V.E. / Gloria [AKA Disco 2000] / Live Bed Show / I Spy
ABORTED THIS IS HARDCORE SESSIONS, NOVEMBER 1996 Help The Aged / Cocaine Socialism (original versions with Russell on guitar - probably very close to the final released versions)
THIS IS HARDCORE DEMOS, JAN/FEB 1997 I'm A Man / The Fear / We Are The Boyz / T.V. Movie / Party Hard / Grown-Ups (instrumental) / Sex Symbols [AKA Seductive Barry]
To be fair, most of this stuff consists of alternative versions of released tracks, so it's understandable that it's been left off the new CDs. It'd still be interesting to hear some of it though... maybe at some point we'll get the outtakes from the outtakes!

Yeah, I've been using your book quite a lot over the last couple of weeks to recount the details on the 'new' tracks that have been released with the reissues.
'Grown Ups' was the only thing I could find from the pre We Love Life Island era that we've not heard some sort of version of - and as it was left as an istrumental it's hardly surprising.
Actually the depth of detail in the book on a lot of these newly discovered tracks is a credit to you Mark. Quotes from Russell and Nick on the likes of 'The Boss', 'We Can Dance Again', 'Dont Lose It', 'Catcliffe Shakedown' and comments on the form/structure of the 'Hardcore' demos (through hearing them yourself or paraphrasing from a 'reputable source' I don't know!) really show how much research you put into 'Truth And Beauty'. In fact 'Frightened' seems to be the only song from all these demos that didn't get a mention.
It was Nick's comment that he thought 'Dont Lose It' should have been on Different Class, and the 'shrouded in mystery' 'You're Not Blind' (for once you didn't seem to shed any light on that one only it's demo date) that made/make (I'm still waiting on delivery of the reissues) me more curious towards these songs in particular.
Also, am I right in saying that the Lipgloss/You're Not Blind/Le Roi De Fourmis session was overseen by Stephen Street? I don't have your book to hand but I'm sure I read that last week. An interesting glimpse to how different a Street-produced HnH might have sounded...
Yeah, the 'reputable source' for my info on the Hardcore demos was Alex from Pulp People - I never had access to them myself. You're Not Blind was 'shrouded in mystery' because I asked Nick and Russell about it and they didn't seem to particularly remember it - Nick said something along the lines of "oh, it was just a song we recorded" and his recollection stopped there! More surprsingly, he also drew a blank when I asked him about Dirty World - maybe because he'd have known it by its alternate title, She Used To Be A Dancer. Who knows.
And yes, that session was produced by Stephen Street.

I'm fairly indifferent toward the demos to existing songs. Knowing too much about the process can take some of the magic away. And the BBC sessions should fill in most of the remaining gaps. It'll be nice to have a professionally mastered copy of Glass (which probably sounds better than the demo, anyway) and an early Russell-ized version of She's a Lady.
I think it's time we shift our focus to pre-Island Pulp. There's not much left to say about the 90's. I have a feeling the reissues wouldn't exist if it weren't for the interest generated by this website. If we concentrate our energies on Fire, maybe they'll give in to our demands as well. That is if they didn't record over all their tapes.
I'm curious to hear the Quiet Revolution demos as well. Or at least a high quality recording of the Flux Fest. I'll always blame Scott Walker for mucking up WLL until I hear something that leads me to believe otherwise.

I have a feeling Fire won't be doing much with their stuff, and I highly doubt they'd have Jarvis' help like Island did with these reissues. It'd be nice if the band could get the rights to the early stuff and maybe put them out on Rough Trade. I'd love a double-disc Freaks with a cleaned-up Sudan Gerri on disc two.
Fuss Free, I think it's only the Peel session tracks and possibly live tracks recorded for Peel's show that will be on the new BBC compilation.
I just want to hear 'After You' - after that I'd be quite content.
Re the 80s stuff, there is not a whole lot of demoed/recorded stuff we're missing. The Sudan Gerri and Ping Pong Jerry demos are readily available, nothing much seems to be left over from Freaks or Seperations - even the Fon demo was plundered with the discovery of 'Rattlesnakes'. Truth & Beauty says that a version of 'Going Back To Find Her' was attempted at the beginning of the Seperations sessions which would be great to hear.
Like FF I'm far more interested in hearing hitherto hidden stuff rather than different versions of the same songs.
Strangely with these re-issues out, it's Pulp's first ever lots of demos (well, second and third but everything from the first at Ken Patten's house turned up on the '81 Peel Session and 'Your Secrets Safe With Us' (What Do You Say?)) and much of their last lot is all that's really missing now.
That means the following:
ROTHERHAM DEMO: How Could You Leave Me? Why Live? Teen Angst / Barefoot In The Park. Feb or March 1982, unknown studio
DEMO SESSION: Sickly Grin / Boats And Trains / Sink Or Swim / In The Heat of the Day. August 1982, Input Studio, Sheffield
Sink or Swim from the 'It' sessions which was left unmixed
Who would own the copyright to these songs now I wonder, if indeed they still exist on a tape reel somewhere? Again, Mark mentions them all in his book so if he's heard them that offers some hope I suppose.
And from almost 20 years later...
PULP" SESSIONS: Darren / The Quiet Revolution / Wickerman / Cuckoo Song / Got To Have Love. Cosford Mill Studios, Surrey. 16 Nov 1999
DEPOT DEMOS:Love You Baby / Six String / Chordy / Playground / Last Song In The World / Medieval Owl / Disco too Disco / Jungle Rumble / Dream Galaxy. Recorded at The Depot (?) c. 1999. NB: All of these had lyrics but were recorded here as instrumentals. Chordy also known as My Mistake & is reminiscent of Birds in Your Garden. Playground sounds like Grandfather's Nursery (see next item).
The above, being all instrumentals aren't as much of a coup as the following holy grail...
WESSEX DEMOS: After You / M'Lady / Grandfather's Nursery / The Performance of a Lifetime / St Just / Got to Have Love. NB: Recorded at Wessex Studios 99/00. St Just started life as Disco too Disco.
I left 'Grandfathers Nursery' in there - this as we know somewhow turned up on the amazon site around the time of We Love Life. It's those other songs that are dying for inclusion on a We Love Life reissue!
I think it's safe to assume Jarvis has copies of all his demos. He doesn't seem the type to throw things out. I think it's quite possible Jarvis didn't release the WLL demos because he's still toying with the songs. Maybe they'll surface on his solo records, or maybe they already have surfaced on the Charlotte Gainsbourg record, or as Relaxed Muscle. For all we know, "After You" could be "Magic Works".
I really want to hear the c.99 demos, esp Cuckoo & Quiet Revolution. Wasn't there a 'go' at WLL with Chris Thomas, which the Bad Cover Version bsides came from? And the rest of the Stephen Street stuff, that'd be really interesting. Didn't realise all of the songs from the Ken Patten demo made it to Peel/Secret. So I've heard them all then... (-: Does make me wonder why What Do You Say was never reused, I prefer it to Turkey Mambo Momma, at least. (Tho' my favourite from that era is Refuse To Be Blind)
I'd be very very interested to hear the '82 Rotheram demo.
Does the stuff we have, eg Sickly Grin, still count as rare? I'd say not, as it's so easilly available.
I haven't got any of the 80's demos or any of that rare stuff that you've all mentioned. I've only got the stuff that's been reissued by Fire. I'd love to hear them but I've never found them anywhere. Sniff.

I'm astounded by the volume of material Mr. Cocker's written. But then, I guess he's had a quarter of a century with not much else to do but write, record and perform his songs. I just write and record so far, but I have a day job, so I'm really happy to get five songs done in a year.
Sorry if I'm being annoying, but I don't know how to access the Yahoo! account. I'd love to know.
Thanks! I've always read about the Sudan Gerri demo but never heard it. I had no idea it was on the 'net. I have the dubious pleasure of owning the Masters 12" so "Silence" had already been... ahem... experienced.
Got my password request in for the Yahoo group so I should all be clued up soon! It's strange - I've liked Pulp since 'Razzmatazz' (just got in there before the big time!) but I never got round to properly searching for all the real rarities. It should be good hearing 'new' Pulp material.
