Not sure that I really took to any of those bands, although I did like Sleeper and still have the albums and listen to them from time to time. Fancied the pants off Louise Wener...always struck me as a female Jarvis (the hand movements, the eyes-looking-upwards-whilst-singing thing).
Having the reissues out has got me thinking about other successful mid-90's bands who just...dissappeared.
Anyone know whatever happened to Shampoo, Salad & Republica?
Shampoo & Republica in particular were quite big, I seem to remember...
Don't know if they were that successful. Oddly many of the successful bands of that era are still making records (well, except Pulp); Radiohead, Manics, Ash, Supergrass, Blur, Oasis, and Suede (as the Tears). Hell, even the Bluetones are still going.
Timeline of Britpop bands here! Pulp deep in the grey!
Not sure about Salad but I do remember the singer becoming some kind of presenter on a music show (no idea which channel).
Last thing I heard about Republica was that Saffron sung on a new track off The Cure's Greatest Hits album from 2001. A video was made (available on the accompanying DVD collection) and a single release planned but it all fell through when The Cure's record label closed down. Johnny Male from the band went onto release a solo-type album under the name Cheapglue in 2002. It featured a rather splendid duet with Sarah Cracknell of Saint Etienne (more to follow...). Back in the mid-90's Male also co-wrote with Cracknell for her solo 1997 album as well as co-writing a few other songs with Cracknell for the Et.
As for Shampoo, they released an internet-only album "We Love Shampoo" in 2001 - only available from their website. It was mostly co-written with Bob Stanley & Pete Wiggs of Saint Etienne. And unlike the Cheapglue duet, it was a bit poo.
And if you hadn't already guessed, I kinda of like Saint Etienne. It was strange because it was only the other day that I realised Bob & Pete were credited on "Intro".
I s'pose the St Et connection makes sense now you've made those points! I do remember reading that Babies was filmed in Bob's flat. The girl on Foxbase Alpha is called Celina Nash. She was Bob's girlfriend at the time, not sure if she's in the Babies vid or not. I'd have to go back and watch it.
