Jarvis Cocker
Title tbc
Rough Trade, Nov

Sheffield's second-sharpest wit (Richard Hawley has pipped him in recent years) returns to something approaching a high profile with his first solo album, rumoured to be called Warrior on the Edge Time. Since Pulp went on an indefinite hiatus three years ago, he hasn't exactly been dormant, but neither has he courted public attention with his former eagerness. He wrote songs for the soundtrack to Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, and collaborated with Charlotte Gainsbourg. None of this high-art swanning, however, has dulled his vicious hatred of privileged sorts: the first track he's released from the album is an otherwise stately ballad called 'Running the World', which has a chorus that points the C-word in the direction of politicians, big business and the silly rock stars who consort with them.

He says: 'I apologise for all the swearing but sometimes that's the only thing that seems appropriate.'

Buy this if you like: Hot Chip's The Warning.

Also, according to another article, "later this year, this magazine will have a guest editor in the shape of one Jarvis Cocker."

Warrior on the Edge Time? How odd. Maybe it's a mistake for Warrior on the Edge of Time? Or maybe it's not the title at all...........! Wonder why they think Hawley is 'sharper' than Jarvis?

Still, it's nice to see that (on the same page) the Long Blondes album is finally coming out relatively soon. Did anyone find out wether Steve did produce the whole record?

I don't know about the Long Blondes, but M.I.A. told me that Steve is a major pain-in-the-arse to work with. And she wasn't being coy, she made a very face.

Yes, this confused me too. I think Hot Chip are extremely overrated and will be linked to a band like Pulp for no other reason than some kind of electronic involvement.

It could be Warrior on the Edge. There's lots of places with 'Edge' in their names in Sheffield like Nether Edge and Brincliffe Edge. At Pulp's 2001 Octagon show, Jarvis said 'I live on the Edge, Brincliffe Edge'.

Haha, I thought it was known that was generally bollocks. That's the problem with wikipedia I suppose. Rather than being a mine of accurate information, it's only as accurate as those (ie anyone who wants) who input new stuff.

I don't understand the post over at the RH forum. Is the poster taking credit for making up the name "Warrior at the Edge of Time" or is he taking credit for the typo?

"Warrior at the Edge of Time" has been floating arould for a while now. It's appeared in Rolling Stone, in Pitchfork, in NME.

And they all lazily pinched their info off each other without checking for a more credible source than a wiki-site.

See here for the album of the same name by Hawkwind
