I am making a compilation CD for the juke box in my local, so can you guys tell me what is your favourite Pulp song to hear in a pub? I'm planning on using two, I think. So far I provisionally have Common People & The Fear (complete and utter breakdown), but I'm not really sure about either...maybe I should use Common People from Glasto 95 instead?
I used to frequent a pub in Chicago that had "Hits" in their jukebox. It was surprisingly popular, though come to think of it, I never heard anyone play Common People. Maybe it's too obvious.
The most frequently played songs seemed to be Babies, Razzamatazz, This is Hardcore, Help the Aged and Disco 2000. I'm not sure what that says about the pub, but I will say it was a pretty relaxed place... no dance floor, cheap beer, people tended to be in their late 20s to early 30s... you know, the Masters degree crowd.
I'd like to go with Live On, only there's the DJ speak at the beginning and end. Still, I'll probably be replacing it in 3 months, & we'll have the version from the reissues by then...
But this is a juke box, isn't it? People need to know the songs before they'll bother dropping a quid on them.
I say stick to album tracks and a few of the more popular b-sides (for the fans), but keep Common People and Disco 2000 off the mix. That way people are forced to try on songs that they might not typically listen to.
Suggestion: OU, Countdown, Pink Glove, She's a Lady, Your Sisters Clothes, Something Changed, Bar Italia, Monday Morning, Mile End, PTA, The Fear, Party Hard, The Day After the Revolution, Bob Lind, Birds in Your Garden, The Day After the Miners Strike.
The beauty is that it's a free jukebox almost all the time! Most of the CDs are compilations made either by the management or the regulars. I agree with going mostly with better known songs tho'. But it's nice to 'experiment' too. Probably still going with Babies and Common People this time, but I'll do something more interesting with my third attempt a few months down the line.
The last one I did, which I'm replacing with this one, had Magic Works & This Is Where I Came In. So I'm going with 'actual' Pulp this time.
I'd like to go with Running The World, but it's a little too explicit. Even tho' they have Sexy MF by Prince, I reckon the C word is pushing it, incase it accidently comes on in the daytime!
