Brum Listening Party Quiz. First one I've seen where the questions get easier, not harder as it goes on...

To be honest I found the conditions for listening to the new album a bit challenging (poor sound quality, people talking, and so on). Even in comfortable conditions I need at least a couple of listens. That's why I avoided commenting.

It definitely sounded good and I'm if anything more excited to hear it properly now. Got to Have Love unsurprisingly got the warmest reception. Of the others, Background Noise and Grown Ups stood out for me, and I think others in the room too. It was harder to appreciate the quieter songs though. I was immediately aware of the similarities between  Grown Ups and The Night They Let Me Out of the Home.

The word 'mature' cropped into my mind a bit. Think I came away feeling like it was a mature record in ways. I think Jarvis might have commented before on how he liked Mike Skinner writing about what was happening to him now. And I felt a bit like that. Take even, HOTN, and Jarvis has spoken in Hotpress about how he was thinking of his son being 16 and soon to be finished school and going out into the world so you hear that kind of maturity and Farmer's Market as well and meeting his wife. Then there is this pull to the past too on Grown Ups and I definitely heard a piece in one of the songs that called to mind an old song. I don't want to say as I don't want to spoil that or plant that idea in anyone else's mind. Like Will, GTHL definitely got the warmest reception but I think My Sex, Grown Ups and HOTN got a warm reception too. Didn't hear so many songs like GTHL. Maybe on balance there would be room for one more like that but honestly I think it's a really strong album. I can definitely hear the influence of the other musicians. I think they take it into places Pulp might not go if it was the 4 members solely but you can hear the Pulp stamp on that too. The violin, I really think she has it down quite well what Russell would've done but also has her own style. HOTN my standout track and GTHL. I think after that I'd say My Sex. Great song. Great album.

Was at Jumbo Records/Leeds. I honestly liked them all - ones that stuck out to me were My Sex and Hymn of the North, the latter was really stirring, though can imagine it's the type of song that would drop further down my playlist as I get to know the others better (if that makes sense). Obv Got to Have Love and Spike Island but I'm well acquainted with them now. I thought Tina was a grower - really grew into itself. That said, my initial favourites on albums often aren't once I've got to know it (Sylvia!). Def worth heading down even though I wasn't sure what to expect. Low-level lights, chilled atmosphere and people sat on floor but was good to hear and get the bags/pens/badges/poster. Now ordered it in two different formats. Can't wait.

There was little chances this would be enjoyable, other than the "experience" which is another thing entirely.

Completely agree, a new album needs to be listened in proper conditions, and that's not going to happen at a listening party.
