Again, think this needs it's kind thread! Trying not to get too excited as to what's on the CD....would Pulp/Universal have handed over stuff that we think is rare/precious?!

PULP: The oddball outsiders of Britpop reconvene for their first interview in 23 years. To be discussed: failure, success, Glasto, Jacko, and much more - not least the most spectacular of comeback albums.
THIS MONTH'S COVERMOUNT CD is Pulp: Forty Odd Years. Live, rare and unreleased tracks from the vast expanse of their career, 1982 to 2025, curated by Cocker and Co. Features killer versions of Common People, Babies, Sheffield: Sex City, His 'N' Hers, The Trees and more!
A World Exclusive interview with Jarvis Cocker's comeback kings (and queen) of '90s pop, Pulp. The lowdown on Glasto, Jacko, controversy, contrarian genius and surprise! their brilliant new album.
Prediction - remixes of More material, S:SC instrumental and live versions of songs at gigs that were professionally recorded like Glastonbury 2011, Sheffield Arena 2012 and Hammersmith 2023. 1982...God knows!
Would be shocked if it contains demos we haven't previously heard.
Doubt they'll use anything from Fire Records, but as it says 1982, maybe some of the earlier bits that Jarvis has dug out in the past - What Do You Say, Sickly Grin etc. Something from the Marples tape?! Doubt it...

I do know there is Sheffield Sex City, Babies and Trees included - so I presume these to be the live tracks, S:SC maybe instrumental although that did get released on Babies....

Violin Thing has already mentioned this.

I wonder what soundboard-quality stuff of note that the band have in their archives. Would be great to hear the debut of WLL era songs from Venice in '99, Cuckoo Song especially.
I'm extremely optimistic about this! In the absence of any further anthologies or collections - which we've heard Jarvis simply isn't interested in - this could be their chance to actually sneak out some bits and pieces for us, without making us buy the albums again to get them.

We still need the full lot. We know there's about 18 unreleased (15 unheard) WLL session tracks - a double cd on their own. At most here i think we'll be lucky to get 2 of them.

Do Mojo have form for releasing a front cover CD for an archive of one particular artist?
I know they often do (or did) albums of songs related to the cover artist in other ways - covers by less well-known musicians, or a compilation of the featured artist's favourites etc.
But I don't know if this breaks new ground. Or if it has happened before, I wonder what we can expect ie number of tracks, sound quality of unreleased/rare/live material etc.
Most libraries (around the world) have PressReader which is digital editions of Magazines and Newspapers. Keep a look out in the next fortnight I think for when June issue will become available.
Ta. OK, judging by the Uncle Nick and Pearl Jam stuff, I'm not going to get too excited. All the Nick Cave material had previously been released. It also contained a track from his new album at the time.
yes recently they did a John Lennon one and all the material was taken from a John Lennon boxset. Its always a mixture of live, maybe a demo, non-album-y stuff. I'll b excited to see it staring back at me at the newsagent come June. This from a person who buys old issues of Select, NME, Melody Makers, The Face from ebay pretty regulalry.
from pulpwiki: "Pulp originally wrote this song in 1999, but the track was completed in 2001. Its unclear whether the released version incorporates the 1999 recording, or was entirely re-recorded in 2001."
so there we go we officially have the first WLL demo released

I agree, felt a bit let down when I saw the tracklisting. Especially since a lot of the live stuff is available in a similar form on FEELINGCALLEDLIVE
I was sort of bracing myself for mostly live versions. Unfortunately I feel this group was bound for disappointment given how intimately familiar we are with.all of their rare stuff

Babies from 2009? Pulp were hibernating then...
Trees rehearsal is cool. SSC was on the DVD extras for the Pulp film. I think Jarvis and Steve mixed the whole gig didn't they? The Goodier 1992 session was one of the first and best they ever did. Was Sliding...previously marked as a Pulp '99 demo? Its a nice nod to Marianne.

The acoustic Babies is a bit of a cheat as it's Jarvis, not Pulp, with Tim McCall (RIP).
Also, is it "Trees" or "The Trees"? I never understood you really and I know it's too late now.
Speaking of which, just like live Pulp in the 2020s, this CD also underrepresents the This Is Hardcore era (despite the cover picture being from that time.). At least we're getting Grown-Ups though.

wasnt it mostly a Jarvis/Steve record ? That could explain why.
What Do You Say? Live in 1982. Interesting one. It's a shame that they don't dig a bit deeper into the early 80s vaults because demos of "Barefoot in the Park", "Teen Angst", "Why Live?", "How Could You?" and "Heat of the Day" were recorded.
Interesting that there are no unreleased demos from 1999-2001 as these are obviously the most valuable. It's possible that "Emmanuel" had something about it if they attempted it for "Hits" and surely there is at least one other great song from this period (Mark spoke very highly of "Last Song in the World").
I have never really been a fan of "The Trees" live. It's a nice song but nothing more. Give me "I Love Life" any day which really takes on a life of its own on stage.
According to Pulpwiki, Candida didn't appear on "Sliding Thru Life On Charm". The lyrics of the final version are clearly written with Marianne Faithful in mind so I imagine the ones from this original version are quite different. It's a good song and a nice inclusion.
Thinking of Mark's book and him talking about this period, I wonder did they consider including something from the "Wild Side" soundtrack that he, Steve and Jarvis worked on as that's unlikely to find a logical home in future reissue projects.
I used to know these things, but don't anymore. How many of those "It is believed this gig was recorded and tapes survive but do not circulate" gigs had What Do You Say? on the setlist? I'm wondering it what's on the Mojo disc is one that is already known of, or whether its a new thing. Marple?
I wonder if the alternative version of "FEELINGCALLEDLOVE" was recorded in 1996 for a potential single release. They did consider this song as the final single from "Different Class".
What are the details of how thr band have the Marples gig? Can't remember the guys name who was selling it, but I do know he 'wanted' to play it to Jarvis.
I would also assume that any early 80s stuff that Russell had - like the Bath gig - would have been copied for Mark W at some point, so the band would probably have access to that.
Scott Mills on Radio 2 played Spike Island this morning and mentioned that Jarvis will be on his show on Tuesday with even more BIG news...
Just copying this across from the Lauren Laverne thread... even more news beyond a new single, album, and tour?! The only thing I can think of is a big reissue collection... which makes me wonder, could the Mojo CD actually be highlights from an anthology we dont know about yet?
Pets and Sting in Preston. It would be amazing to go back to Preston the Radio 2 thing, sadly it aint gonna happen. Stanley Park Blackpool would be my next bet if need be lol.
I was really surprised Tramlines didn't run with the 'UK festival exclusive' advertising when they announced Pulp, and I reckon this could be why. Pulp at Radio 2 in the Park!
I'm still hoping for a secret Glastonbury set, as I'm going this year! I still have faith in that though. Stranger things have happened.
I would say that it is against the rules. However, as most people don't have CD players/drives nowadays, I think that one person ripping it and sharing with others who have bought the CD is justified. It would probably be more appropriate to share the link with people privately.
Same for 7". I'd love a 7inch single for Spike Island. It would be cool to see some kind of boxset of all the pulp single in several formats, like suede did for their singles and albums
The rehearsal of Trees is gorgeous. A real shame they haven't brought it out yet. Festivals and arenas aren't the place for it, admittedly. Silly Billys releasing it as a single in the first place...
And S:SC...
I remember it being great live that night at Sheff Arena in 2012 and seeing it on the DVD Extras of the film but wow, this is like the pinnacle of everything fun, different and inventive about Pulp with real musical muscle behind it. Incredible.

The familiar tracks are not just copied from other albums as you might reasonably suspect, there are slight differences.
Live On (from His 'n' Hers Deluxe) and Common People (from The Peel Sessions) are full quality versions, only without the mastering from those albums (which made the volume more consistent throughout). Duck Diving, on the other hand (also from The Peel Sessions) is in a lossy format, most noticeable in the quiet sections. Death Comes to Town is indeed the alternative mix (aka "Mix 1" on the Pulp Portfolio) and seems to have been sourced from the same lossy MP3 that Stephen used.
Sheffield: Sex City isn't just lifted from the Pulp film extras, it's got an extra section at the start. And in comparing them, I've only just realised the UK PAL DVD is sped up by ~4% and so this is the first time I've heard this at the right speed and pitch.

I suspect cost is why they don't do that. Paul Wellers last LP, 66, was released as six singles for £66 or so. The 13 singles from Lip Gloss to Bad Cover Version would retail at close to £150. Though I guess there are a few here that would buy them.

The rules are from a bygone era pre-Spotify (2007) and somewhat irrelevant nowadays. To put it into context, many of the RSD exclusives are up on Spotify and other streaming services today. The MOJO CD is unique in that it isnt and wont be available anywhere else after the June issue is err, pulped. Also, as a fan, I generally get hacked off with people selling these freebie CDs online, so for those who cannot get a copy of MOJO as I guess it is only UK based it is good they can get an audio copy. And I suspect any Pulp fan worth their salt will be at WH Smith buying a copy this week.
I will let the administrator of the forum make the final decision
Where is Ste? He ain't been seen for years. If anything could bring him back, surely it would be Pulp Come Alive In '25?
On His'n'Hers on the Mojo CD they also seem to have added in a couple of "What makes you frightened?" responses from the Butt Naked TV appearance. Thankfully, they've chosen this version as the wasps/bees Jarvis monologue is un-paralleled.
Also, seems I was wrong about Sliding Thru Life On Charm - the words were always written for Marianne Faithful. There's a fair bit of chugging guitar on this (Candida's absence clearly felt) but it's still a decent song with some fantastic lyrics.
Feeling Called Love (can't do the caps, sorry), it's just another kinda boring Moloko remix, unfortunately.
The Babies acoustic with Jarvis and Tim is well-performed. There's a nice moment when the audience recognise the guitar line near the start.
It's a fascinating selection, all told.
I do hope, as has been suggested on here, that this CD is a taster for a full anthology Pulp release in the next year or two. How amazing would that be? There could be several discs-worth of stuff on there. I guess it would be regarded as more sellable than a WLL deluxe.

Honestly such a shame that they didn't rotate the UK festival setlist more. Weeds and BCV could've been rotated with Trees, Dishes with Like a Friend, Lipgloss with Razzmatazz, and it would all have been just a bit fresher. (I really do hope all these songs make repeat airings how I'd love to be there for Lipgloss once more!)

I haven't heard from him for years and he hasn't accessed this forum since 2019. I was friends with him on Facebook but it looks like he deleted his account. He has always been a huge Pulp fan (well, of course, he created this forum) so I would have expected him to pop up when the reunion was announced. Perhaps he has just moved on and has no interest in the forum any more.
Thanks for sharing. FWIW I will be buying the magazine, not just to add the CD to my collection but cos I think it's increasingly important to support these publications when they give us good content like this (we'll miss them when they're gone).
He has always been a huge Pulp fan (well, of course, he created this forum)
Its a shame the old pulp.gb.com disappeared many years ago and never was resurrected. The forum was somewhat incidental. I think many of the posts from the original forum made their way on here, so they were preserved, but alas the website content is long lost.

Fun fact, if you look at the source code for the forum, it's still attempting to show a background image from the old site (http://www.pulp.gb.com/pinkswirl2.gif, fact fans). Maybe a header image too. The background image certainly still exists on archive.org. Is there any way we might be able to get it reinstated for old times' sake?

Just randomly poked around the song list; surprised I don't remember I'm A Man getting universal acclaim way back when...
I have had a look before and some of my old reviews are on there. I was around 15 at the time and I must admit, a lot of my opinions have changed since. In respect of "I'm a Man", when I first heard it, I immediately thought that it would be a huge hit but then I went off it when they played it live.
Luckily, it's all in the Internet Archive. Sté's reviews were great, I often go back and re-read them.
Added a sticky post linking to the archive. It's like time travel.
Most gladdening to see that l'admin fromage grand had such stellar choice when it came to picking his favourite Pulp song of all! And hopefully the band will opt to give it another airing this summer (only when I'm there, of course...)
Christ it's weird seeing the 2005 version of the forum, with the 20-years-ago versions of us shooting the breeze.
I didn't realise Steve D still had ultimate control of this forum. Does that potentially mean we're potentially living on borrowed time somewhat? Like if some techy thing (I don't know what) happens that requires admin intervention, we'd be stuffed. ArrGee is it worth getting in touch with Activeboard and asking if you can be given full control, given the circs?

Activeboard is pretty good in that it will run itself without any interference. I have administered another for 20 years or so after an err hostile takeover and havent raised a support ticket since 2013. If something extreme did occur, I can get in contact but there are lots of activeboard forums out there and there is no reason to believe anything untoward will happen.
Got it at WHSmiths at lunchtime (soon to disappear from the high street). Nice little editorial bit too from John Mulvey about his first encounter with the group (OU launch). Look forward to reading the article later. Had a glance and they've paid homage to Russell and Steve too so it seems properly researched and written. Pretty sure the journalist has done articles and interviews on Pulp/Jarvis before.
It's a well-written article, basically a potted history of the band with seemingly a lot of new quotes from various parties, with some discussion of the present. Pretty candid too, referencing the unresolved falling out of Mark and Russ, and Jarvis admitting he now hasn't spoke to the latter for many years since the 2011 reunion gigs.
We even get a few teasing lyrics from the as yet unheard "Tina" (talk of charity shops and digestives).
