Which surely means a comeback single dropping potentially as soon as next week! Spike Island come alive!
I think Ross has always liked JC/Pulp. Their only other live appearance on TV promoting new material since WLL was "After You" for his TV show 12 years ago. He also gave airtime to a stripped-down performance of Jarv and Candida doing Birds In Your Garden when his chat-show was on BBC in 2001.
Anyway...Next Saturday at 9.20pm on ITV1. Jarvis is apparently one of the chat guests too.

From my Freeview EPG:
The Jonathan Ross Show Sat 12 Apr 21:20-22:20

Watched tonight's show - first time I've really seen this chat-show in years. Jonathan Ross has adopted the successful Graham Norton format of the guests all being on the sofa and interviewed together (or focussing on one or two people and then bringing other guests out and into the conversation).
At the end of the show he confirmed Jarvis being on the sofa and Pulp performing next week. Can't wait, this is really exciting!
I don't think Jarvis has done many chat-show appearances since We Love Life (and the aforementioned J.Ross Show in 2001). Considering that was before social media, it would be understandable if he feels a little anxious. People just pass comment online now without much filter. Can imagine a few "Fuck, he looks old! or "Pulp still going? They sound shit." tweets next week...at least the shared-couch format might make him feel less uncomfortable.
Interestingly, there were two musical guests tonight - Craig David - who just chatted and didn't perform live and Simple Minds who performed (but weren't couch-guests). They played their biggest hit, "Don't' You Forget About Me" and the thought did occur that maybe the producers of the show will prefer that Pulp play Common People or Disco 2000 next week. I hope not....I remember when they did "After You" last time, Pulp played the Disco 2000 riff into an ad-break or returning from one (which I think Chris Evans had wanted them to do in 1998 for TFI Friday and they refused). But I imagine Pulp would only be appearing on this to plug the return/new material. Hope so anyway...
Pulp didn't bother with any real promo or publicity for the last two reunions cos they didn't need to as the tickets sold themselves. I wonder how they'll feel about a cycle of having to do it now to promote new "product" as there's bound to be huge interest.
The three lads have all got a taste for it having released books in the last couple of years (Jarvis being an old hand at media duties anyway) and I think Mark has even enjoyed the public appearances for his book but this will be on another level. It will be good to hear more from Candida, hopefully she'll feel like doing so me interviews.
So much has changed since 2001. I doubt the word "podcast" existed then. They'll be invited onto more of them than you can shake a stick at.
I'm not au fait with press & PR for typical album-campaigns these days but from what I can see, other high-profile slots for legacy acts returning with a new album seem to be on stuff like the Chris Moyles Show (Radio X) and (still) Chris Evans on Virgin...maybe some old scars remain there.
It's gonna be an intriguing rest of 2025 though! A lot of us have never lived through a period of Pulp being pushed to mainstream media.

Stoked for this. Not that keen on Ross right now as he's been sticking with Glinner through the last few years, however I wouldn't expect anyone who isn't terminally online to know about that.
I'm going I'm going! I went to the 2012 one too, that was exciting, I met Nick in the non famous person greenroom. Saw Mark and Candida eating in the canteen but obviously didn't bother them
In a recent pulpchile & co about the jonathan ross show next saturday we questioned "will pulp play a new single?" and the elysian collective posted "Yup". Then they deleted the comment and posted an emoji, so i think they spoke too much???
Great news you know what, I've been watching the Tommy Tiernan show here in Ireland every Saturday kinda hoping Jarvis would show up on it. I mean he did a radio interview with Brendan O Connor when his book was out. With the TT Show no one knows in advance who is on it, not even TT and I can always see that being a great interview if it was ever to happen. Probably never happen especially if he's doing this and obviously UK is more exposure. I have seen people with absolutely nothing to plug show up on TT like Roger Daltrey and that's nice.
I used to watch JR every week, haven't in about 6 or 7 years I'd say. I'll definitely be tuning in. I remember the excitement back in 2001. The fact that there's gonna be an interview is even bigger! Obviously last time with After You there was none. Are we really going to get a new album? I was just thinking of Hymn of the North today. I would just love to hear a studio recording of that. Such a warm song and so fitting. I can't think of Pulp without thinking of the North of England.
Ta for the heads up!
On a separate note, Eamonn, come on the Villa! What a year!!!

They only did the Disco 2000 riffs coming in and out of one of the commercial breaks, but not the full song.
So Babies or Spike, choose your poison but not both.
Ah, yes, I remember now.
That said, I think that [in old money] "Got to Have Love" is the most obvious choice for single. Who knows? They may play a brand new song that we haven't even heard of yet.
Agreed on Got to Have Love - that'd get my vote as the single!
Yeah, Tommy Tiernan is a good interviewer. It's a combination I'd love to see. There's a few musicians I'd love to see on that. I love that it's not the usual questions and never contrived because there's no prep.
So, looks like Divine Comedy are announcing a new album on Tuesday. Could be a happy week for the Venn Diagram crossover folk.
Where have you seen that?
Goodness its going to be an expensive week.
Not off to Paris too, are ya?
TDC's social media has a little video with the message being 08.04.25
WHATTTTT ? FINALLY (too) No way. What a week its gonna be.
And then a joint tour ?
Apparently the last DC message said it would be out late 2025. But did they all pushed their release forward because of Oasis reunion that will occupy the second part of the year ?

Absolutely, I am in the middle of the diagram but more towards the Pulp side. I think that this is the longest The Divine Comedy have gone without releasing an album so hopefully it will be a good one.

Its almost the same gap between the 2010 album "bang..." and the 2016 album "Foreverland". Six years. But Neil has released countless songs inbetween : box set, best of with an album worth of unreleased songs again. It doesn't feel like 6 years really.
I'm sure it will be a good one, i cant think of a bad album. Maybe Foreverland was a bit behind, but it felt like a throaway record before the risky "office politics". But still a very good record.

Thankfully not. I'm not sure how I'd explain to my wife that after doing that I've spent goodness knows what on whatever merch packages TDC and Pulp come up with.
New Pulp album, new Divine Comedy album and my team in the UCL quarters all in the same week? My teenage self would be in a state of excitement beyond anything else possible at that. All it'd need is a new version of Championship Manager and I'd have felt like I'd have completed life.
Looking forward to hearing the reports from the filming on Wednesday. Strange to think we've all be wanting this for so long and it could be about to drop any second now.
I don't think the single is coming tomorrow. Better this thursday (World Pulp Day) or friday just because it's friday and the day before the jonathan ross show. Who knows if shortly after the presentation??!?!?!?
Yes please. I'd do it but VPN doesn't work for the ITV live broadcast website. There are some alternative sites which works though. But better if someone from the UK can record it from the official web in order to have a better quality than other sites.
God, I absolutely despise Jonathan Ross. But he's where Pulp left off last time playing After You in 2013 so at least there's a pleasing symmetry to things.
I know!! So glad you got that - I know it will probably be up on You Tube and Tok Tik. I tried to include a VHS emoji but didnt display.
I wonder if a Later with Jools performance will be booked? Jools is still a thing right?
The landscape has changed so much around releasing a record. I hope they get a MOJO or Uncut or Record Collector cover. I still read those 'mens' magazines (being cheeky)

Later with Jools is still a thing for a few months of the year. Artists tend to only get to do one or two songs though, not like the three Pulp used to do when they appeared. There are other BBC shows, the Piano Room month they had recently featured folk like Franz Ferdinand doing a few songs with the BBC orchestra. The iplayer/streaming options allow for more coverage than TV-timed programmes so I'm sure they'll be getting a lot of online/radio and TV offers. Just depends on how much promo they can be arsed with or they agree on with Rough Trade.
An Uncut/Mojo special edition dedicated to Pulp like the ones they constantly revise and recycle of the usual suspects would be amazing.
But in fairness - Pulpwiki, Giles Acrylic, Sturdy's book and Weej's blog contains the level of detail and quality of writing that ensures Pulpheads have an embarrassment of riches close at hand when it comes to doing deep-dives on our heroes and heroine.

Very much agree Earmon. I think I learnt more about the inner workings of Pulp when Mark was promoting I'm With Pulp over the past 6 months with the various podcasts / radio segments / web interviews. Especially the Spaceman 3 and Cat Power connections. Loved that!
Ok so just back home after the recording. The one song they did was Spike Island NEW SINGLE NEW SINGLE but no release date given.
He missed his cue to start singing so he stopped and apologised, then they had to do two takes, the first time you could see his green wristband so that got cut off
Interview was some good, some ok. Loads of mention of britpop which I know he hates. Jonathan Ross was asking the other guests what they thought of Pulp, Martin Freeman wasn't very specific but went on about how Pulp did their own thing, I don't think he was a big fan tbh he was more mod back then wasn't he.
Good bits - spoke about how he proposed in a traffic jam, he'd been thinking about it in mexico but for whatever reason he didn't then in the traffic jam it was well there is time here. Spoke about his wedding too in the circus. It was cute
He couldn't say much about album track listing he looked up at his manager but could mention that one of the tracks was Farmers Market, then there was chat about mundane song titles. Album out in June. Showed a pic of the cover, it's called More as we all know. Simple cover the 4 of them in the distance, pic of scenery taken by Jarvis in Iceland.
More chat about the fall out of the window, with actions. And the lederhosen story. The lederhosen one was from a talk about fashion and Jarvis said I know what you're alluding to I've told this story before but went through it again in very good humour. Window story was from Jonathan Ross asking a question about a pic shown of Jarvis in a wheelchair on stage, you know the one. Again he said something like I've told this before but it was fun to watch
He also spoke about Jason writing the music for Spike Island and Jason had said something about being there, I can't remember what but it has gone into the lyrics. He said it's the second song he's written inspired by Spike Island and he'd not been at the gig. I had no idea that Sorted for Es and Wizz was inspired by a girl he knew telling him about dealers going round the gig saying sorted for es and wizz so that was cool
I got into the green room I saw Nick Mark and Jarvis at different times but didn't go bother any of them. A few folk got their picture with Jarvis.
Sounds as though the "comedic" bits of Jarvis' life were researched/scraped for public entertainment. Pretty reductive and shallow, probably reminded Jarvis why fame is horrible.
So the front cover isn't the Andes and Jason wrote the music to Spike Island huh? Interesting!
Anyone see it? A triumph I think! Like the radio edit, there was some judicious redacting of the live performance of Spike Island but that would have helped keep more eyeballs on the entire thing.
Jarvis acting-out the window-fall story was great and the guests and audience seemed to find it amusing. The lederhosen stuff must have got cut. All-round, Pulp should be happy with that. Social media might be cruel cvnts but pay them no heed. Pulp Live On!
Yeah nice performance, also most look like they dont want to be there
But a good one for people in their 60s.
The other guy on guitar is Jason Buckle ?
Weird without Steve i gotta say.

they don't want to be there, yeah, or Pulp keep its energy for a bigger audience.
I hope Jarvis can still jump without breaking his legs, I don't want to see him falling on stage.
still not "big" fan of Spike Island, something is missing, maybe the chorus is not as rich as the previous big hits
they can't play with it, distort or variate the chorus enough to break the monotony of the structure.
To come back after 24 years with this is a bit disappointing. I prefer Background Noise but it has the same problems.
I want Got to have Love as a second single, please. There's much more energy in it.
It's a bit harsh, of course they wont have the energy to pull this of live the same way they did. Even in 2012 when i saw them live, Jarvis had trouble maintaining the energy during the whole gig, he was out of breath mid-gig. So now...
But the studio version is spot on. Jarvis vocals are amazing, its not too modern, not too retro sound. This is a good one. But the "big" single is always the 2nd one. It will be Got to have Love no doubt.
We gotta accept that at 60, they just cant deliver a record like DC, or TIH. No artist has made they groundbreaking record at that age. If it's strong and well recorded, this is already a win for me. It's not like we have so many great records years after years lately.
still got the feeling that we have lost 24 years...
Conversely, Jarvis had already done 24 years of 'Pulp' - man and boy - by the time they disbanded in 2002, so I don't blame him for wanting to take a break at that point and do something different / work with new people. He also got married and had a child, let's not forget. That changes a person.
Had they carried on after We Love Life the whole thing might have slowly petered out to nothing, or relationships between band members might have been strained to the point where a reunion would be unthinkable.
I think back in 2011-13 we all hoped for new material but the will - crucially from Jarvis - clearly wasn't there. The wind has changed, so let's hope it keeps blowing in the right direction.
The only fail to me is all those WLL and TIH demos left for dead. They could have made such a great record with only those two leftovers
Grown Ups
You Are The One
Street Operator
Can I Have My Balls Back, Please?
Cuckoo Song
Quiet Revolution
After You
The Last Song In The World
Sliding Through Life On Charm
Love Is
It's a Dirty World
Big Bulk of great tunes that could have made one more final album. WLL was a bit of a miss to me.
Jarvis has released somewhere between 3 and 7 albums during that time, so it isn't like we've had nothing.
2 solo albums, 1 chilly, 2 Jarv Is, 1 cover album, 1 Relaxed Muscle, 1 Likely Stories, 1 Suite for Ian & Jane, 3 songs for Harry Potter and many collabs.
Mark and Candida had no interest in making a new record in 2012/13. And Nick's comment on the radio the other day was telling. This time round he told Jarvis that if a new album meant spending a year in the studio like the last two times, he wasn't up for it. Luckily, Jarvis felt the same way.
It does feel that in general Pulp didn't release as much music/albums as they could have done. Their quality control from 1992 onwards is really high.
But they are also the most human of bands, flaws and all. (I just read a comment from someone reacting to the Spike Island video - "We don't want no AI. We just want the right to be different. That's all").
I find it more impressive that they held it together to release TIH and WLL. The mid-90s changed all of them and not necessarily in pleasant ways. They had already spent many years perceived as failures. Success was bittersweet and they weren't a band who enjoyed touring, Candida and Russell especially.
Even last night on the JR Show, you could sense Jarvis playing along with the famous personality part of his "job", but not being totally comfortable with it.
I just could never see them as a group who does the same three year cycle of write, record, release, promote and tour on a long-term basis. They all need time to do other things and live normal lives.

Like Bookmark, I'm not a huge fan of this one. It has grown on me but I think I just don't hear it as the single but then I felt like that about Trees and I love that. I'm really looking forward to Got to Have Love and Hymn of the North.
I'm also looking forward to hearing the new ones because i didn't keep up with the other live YouTube vids.

Russell always felt to me like a big in the A, if you ask me. But i could be wrong. For the rest, its all valid points. but as a musician and songwriters, having all those unreleased unfinished demos, it feels really like unborn children.
Maybe but lots of artists have big archives of material. I read this week that 8 unreleased Bruce Springsteen albums from the last 45 years are coming out this summer!
Mark Webber didn't once pick-up a guitar during Pulp's hibernation. And I can't imagine Candida tinkering with melodies in a houseful of synthesizers (I may be wrong)! Steve became more interested in production and design aspects of music and art generally.
Which just leaves Nick and Jarvis who have "the bug" for making new music and performing live. They've both been involved in various projects since 2002 but two people isn't enough for a Pulp reboot. So I'm glad Mark and Candy have come on-board fully again. And just grateful that they've managed to finish and release an album in 2025!
Emma Smith who clearly has the best job in music, was playing violin for Beth Gibbons at Coachella at the weekend, hence why she didn't appear with Pulp on the JR Show I assume.
Saw a video of the performance of Beth singing Glory Box by her old band Portishead (incredible) and from the silhouette and based on seeing her and band last year, it looked like James Ford was on keyboards.
