I've just found out (via a royalty statement) that a quote from my book was used on Never Mind the Buzzcocks at some point in the second half of last year. I don't suppose anyone happened to catch the episode? Didn't know you got paid for stuff like that but apparently you do!

Ha, no way! I don't have the channel and only see the odd clip on YouTube. Some of the personalities on it can be hard going.

But I'm intrigued now...it wasn't Mark Webber in the Identity Parade round, was it?!

A quick search on Reddit threw this up (every episode on Google Drive):

I have never watched it before but it looks like season 32 ran from October to December last year so that's probably the one you want.

Could try asking Richard Herring on Blue-sky
If he knows what it might be as he's a writer on it?

Is Herring a Pulponian?

Richard Herring is not really into music of any sort, so I'm surprised they have him writing for it.

I have answers!

Series 3 Episode 9, aired 18/10/2023, a question posed during round one ("What a way to make a living") preceded by a clip from the Disco 2000 video:

"What job did Jarvis's mum make him take at 17?"

A. His mum got him a job at a fishmonger in the hope that the 'rough lads' who worked there would toughen him up. His main job was scrubbing shellfish but if a customer asked if he had any crabs, Jarvis would point at his crotch and say "Ooh missus," and start scratching his knackers.

B. She asked a family friend to let him shadow them during their shifts at the local abbatoir. However, Jarvis was fired after two days because he refused to wear the uniform. He said, "It's pretty rich that they acted like me not wearing a hairnet was the most fucked up thing happening there when I literally saw a pig explode."

C. She got him a job at the factory that makes big tractor wheels. Speaking about it on The One Show, Jarvis told Alex Jones and Ronan Keatng, "It was okay".

Some quotes on Jarvis from the participants:

  • Daisy May Cooper: "I think he'd [Jarvis] make a really good draft excluder."
  • Noel Fielding: [discussing the Brit Awards saga] "I imagine if you tried to put Jarvis in prison he'd just walk through the bars."
  • Danny Goffey: "He's lovely, Jarvis, he's a real sweetheart."

Daisy's team plumped for B. Which was wrong, obviously.

And here's the quote that earned Sturdy some cold hard cash, courtesy of Russell Senior:

"He had a very convincing patter for selling fish, with lots of sexual innuendo... People would ask, "Have you got any crabs on you, cock?" and he'd say "Ooh missus, the trouble with me," and scratch himself, or, "I've got a lovely piece of tail end for your husband, love."

Good work, Pip.

Think they got his age wrong though. He was 17 when he heard the countdown start but wernt he 15 when he scrubbed the crabs that killed Sheffield?

Nice words from Danny G too.

Just remembered that they approached me about this, think they found the Truth & Beauty quote on my blog, I just said "go ask Mark Sturdy" I think, but I don't think they contacted you? Hope they at least bought a copy of the book!

Not to discredit Sir Sturdy, but given the story could have been sourced from anywhere (i.e it wasn't a primary source as in a direct quote/story given exclusively by Jarvis for the book), I'm surprised they had to pay a royalty on it!

Edit: Just watched the clip and read Pip's post again, saw that it referred to Russell's quote which I guess was from a direct exhange to Mark for Truth & Beauty.

Apart from Greg Davies taking the piss out of Jarvis' appearance and overlooking the name of the group, it wasn't too disrespectful a segment...

Thanks for digging that up Pip! I don't recall them contacting me at all.

Even though they got it from the book, I'm 99% sure I got that quote from somewhere else. Can't check right now but the source should be referenced in the book. Oh well, thanks to whoever did the original interview, Omnibus Press is now £412.50 richer, and I'm 50% of that closer to paying off my advance. Funny old world.

That's not bad! I was expecting a Spotify streaming £3.27 or some similar chicken-feed shit.

Found it! S31E09 - not series 32 after all.

Think the quote was originally from an interview with Martin Aston, Mark will know better than me though.

They actually get things a little wrong as Greg Davies says Jarvis lost his job at the fish stall when he sold rotten crabs and the health inspectors shut it down, implying that Jarvis was responsible and the closure was permanent.
