I came across a Adam Ant video in the style of the Beatles Anthology Expanded yesterday - if you don't know what that is, it's like a single audio presentation bringing together many sources to tell his story. And I though "hm."

So here's my first go at a Pulp equivalent, covering the time from the group's formation in 1978 to the end of Pulp MK 1 in the late spring of 1982.

I used these clips:

  • BBC The Pulp Story Part 1
  • Jarvis Cocker - Songbook 2008
  • Pulp at Peel Acres Sept 1995
  • Jarvis Cocker on John Peel and Early Pulp
  • Made in Sheffield - The Start of Pulp
  • Jarvis Cocker takes school assembly at The City School in Sheffield
  • Jarvis Cocker on Good Pop Bad Pop
  • Various bits from Pulp Portfolios including Paul Mills interview from 1986

...but feel that this is almost certainly going to be incomplete.

So here's the deal - you have a listen, see what you think, see if anything is missing, then I'll make V2, then a little later I'll start thinking about Part 2.

It was more that the research was already there on my hard drive, and making sound mixes is an everyday habit, and I thought "who will make this? Oh, me."

Take it from the silence that that's fairly comprehensive? On a re-listen I realised need to fix the levels, some speech too quiet / music too loud - and need to cut the music down a bit too.

Next I'll move on to 'It' but unfortunately there seems to be very little out there besides the music. If anyone knows of any radio / tv interviews where anyone involved talks about the record (or the first two singles) then that would be really welcome!

Looking at Pulpwiki, this may be promising, but I don't have a copy of it, in fact I don't even remember hearing about it before. Does anyone have a copy to hand?

Details: Marianne Faithfull presents the story of the terrifically hip modern pop band best known for frontman Jarvis Cocker and the 1995 single Common People, which catapulted the group into public consciousness 12 years after the release of their debut LP.

Transmitted: circa 1984
Details: Interview with Pulp and broadcast of tracks from the Sudan Gerri demo. (Pulp appeared on this programme several times.)

Also this one looks useful, talking about the 20th May 1982 gig!

BBC London - Gary Crowley
Broadcast: 9 December
Details: Interview with Jarvis about his recently released first solo album, plus, reminiscences of Pulp's first ever gig in London and recollections of Jarvis' first home in the capital. The Boss got (probably) its first ever radio play.

it's great! not really as knowledgeable as other posters here so can't really weigh in on whether or not it is missing anything, but in terms of listenability etc: the transitions felt natural and not once did i feel compelled to turn it off : )
