Happy birthday, Eamonn! Hope you partied hard!

It's awful not being there. Today I was rewatching bits of the 2012 Santiago gig on YouTube; in hindsight I wish I'd somehow been in Chile on that day when I was 10. But it'll be Hogmanay soon enough...

New song
Background Noise

As a big surprise for everyone, the band performed a new song titled Background Noise, which was dedicated to Jarvis' girlfriend.

NEW SONG NEW SONG!!!!! It feels like a reworking of a Jarv Is tune, and sort of also feels like a 70s balladeer (is that even a word) singing a faster song if you get what mean.

It's called Background Noise.

No Something Changed or talk of Steve but I guess they had to stop sometime

Pared down production, no string section apart from Emma.

Short set, they came on just after 1010, done by 1130.

Sorry for any typos, doing this on my phone and I'm KNACKERED

Wow! Getting strong Walker Brothers vibes off that & I'd imagine fans of 'Happy Endings' will enjoy it.

Lovely stuff this. Surely they can do an album & record it live Jarv Is style & I can die a happy man

Ah, cool, I wasn't expecting a new song :) I particularly like the verses. As with Hymn of the North, I'd love to hear a studio recording. Sounds promising. The verses are the highlight for me. Going to listen again.

It's on YouTube. To me, it sounds like "Hymn of the North" meets "Happy Endings".

Nice song
they should be clearer about their intentions. Is this a new Pulp or Jarv is song? I would prefer the first option but according to Nick's words, no new album is planned. Truth or... background noise?

Are you serious, a new song?! A lovely birthday pressie...I thought folk were joking and that it being in the setlist just meant it was an extended stage/ stage/crowd/lighting effect biggrin

What do you all think of the new song so far? I agree that it reminds me of Hymn of the North. Making me wonder if there's going to be more new songs or an actual album being thought up for somewhere down the road of just songs made or remade during these gigs.

What's this song about? Anyone transcribe the full lyrics yet?

I like it. Very pretty song. Jarvis embracing the softer side these days and I like that. I love both sides, though.

Did they play Like a Friend? It's on the setlist pictured above, but not on Setlist.fm.

I'm really sleep deprived after staying up all night to watch the setlist come through, but I honestly already think Background Noise is at least in my top 20, maybe even top 15, already. There is just something about it that clicked with me instantly. It really provokes a lot of personal emotion. I haven't been able to stop listening to it.

Wow, Pulp's (potentially) first sub-3-minute pop song since....The Boss?! (My Mistake still unreleased, officially)

On one listen i really like it, surprised people are fixated on the verses, yes there's a repeated line that feels lifted from "So please, stay in sight of the main land" but that chorus is pretty immediate. Kinda has shades of Girls Like It Too and bass/guitar propulsion reminiscent of Like A Friend. I think it could get radio-play. Writing about love and ageing without it sounding maudlin, depressing or ego-driven must be bloody difficult but the Cocker is walking a fine line, nicely.
Also, nice touch of the old TV static on the visuals, presumably that means this song will be a mainstay into the 2024 shows.

Nick Barnes - haha that made me chuckle.

Having re-read the quotes from Nick, where "We'll have to announce for next year, its classified"....and then the next sentence was to downplay it, for me that was a huge clue and tease. So - we have Hymn of the North, and Background Noise. Two new Pulp songs in the space of a few months, during a reunion hit based tour. If Hymn of the North was the only song to be played as new, then id possibly see the argument for no new album. HOWEVER - Background Noise, says to me - that 2024 is going to be a fantastic year. There is no purpose of writing these new songs to not have them released.

I have said it all along, and im now 99% certain - Pulp will release a new album.

It's promising alright. And their website has t shirts now saying Let's All Meet up in the Year 2024. I actually had a dream last night they were doing Glastonbury. Has that been announced or was that just my dream?

100% with you on this.

The NME interview Nick scuppered plans for an album and really played down things about Hymt Of The North, to the point where I thought well maybe it was just a one off thing that won't go any further.

There have certainly been no conversations about new material and to be honest, he said. Im not sure if any of us have a real appetite for that because you have to put three to five years of your life into it. In terms of writing, recording then touring, it would be really difficult. I cant see it happening myself weve got other things to do.

The fact that they've got another new (as far as we know) track so soon after certainly goes against what he has said above, and it seems again like something good is afoot now - bolstered by the gigs booked well into mid-next year.

The tracks hit a note similar to Last Day Of The Miner's Strike for me, where the band left off in 2002.

Capping off a career in this style with an album amalgamating Pulp and the extra live musicians from Jarvis' band would be incredibly wonderful, and a little better than how they went out in 2002, and a lot nicer than leaving us with one new (reworked) track then disappearing again like in 2012/2013. A new record followed by a bit more touring then they can call it and I'll be a happy man.

Interesting that to accommodate the new track, they left out Something Changed and Mis-Shapes rather than the Weeds or Pink Glove.

For reference, Pulp left out Something Changed only once during 2011-12. The fact they're inclined to leave out the singles is a good sign, I think, of an active band who aren't just giving us the Greatest Hits.

Would probably feel the loss of Mis-Shapes - would really miss Pink Glove - the others could both be swapped out and I wouldn't be fussed.
