So tonight, I had the pleasure of meeting the one and only Ian Broudie, Mr Lightning Seeds himself in Liverpool at the British Music Experience down at Pierhead, Liverpool. It was a similar type of setup to the Nick Banks talk at Oh Me Oh My, with a Q and A at the end.

I am fortunate that Ian "knows" me, and so I had a nice conversation with him during the book signing. I told him that I have a question to ask, which I was a little embarresed about as it involved my "other favourite band", to which Ian asks who.....and I tell him Pulp.

For those not aware, Ian did an unused remix of Lipgloss which is unreleased. Sadly this was actually on ebay a long time ago and it got won, but I have never ever heard this. Ian was meant to have been doing a number of remixs for Pulp - and he told me that.....

"I remixed that song, and Jarvis was meant to have gotten back in contact with me - but he never did!"

So it seems either Jarvis has a bit of beef with Ian over something, or he just simply didnt like the remix, and ignored any further communications with Ian.

I asked a member of Pulp a while ago what they thought about the Broudie Remix - and they said it was "fucking shite".

It's a shame I didn't know about that. I was stuck in St. Helens last night so would have gone to it.

Yes, it's a shame we can't hear the remix. It sold on eBay a few years ago for a ridiculous price and was described as being considerably different to the album version. Surely, it can't be as bad as some of the "This is Hardcore" and "Party Hard" remixes.

Got to say, I have heard it and although it's interesting, it wasn't finished and isn't much different from the original. There's just some grungy guitar added to the verses, an additional 'oh oh' in the run up to the chorus and some synth sounds boosted in the mix.
Here's the story: Jarvis and Steve became friendly with Terry Hall from the The Specials (he appeared on the DYRTFT time film), they produced a more electronic remix (lots of familiar His 'n' Hers-like overdubs) of his single Forever J in 1994 and as a result made contact with Mr. Broudie who was producing Terry's work at the time. Ian's engineer, Cenzo Townsend, put a demo DAT together of Broudie's work in progress of the Lipgloss remix. Lance Thomas was producing Ladytron's first album, 604, in Liverpool a few years later (99-01) and somehow ended up with the DAT which he sold to me a few years ago. Unfortunately, I don't think I made a copy of the contents, or if I did, I still can't find it (I'll keep looking). I sold it on with a load of stuff I almost regret selling now, to someone on ebay who then seems to have sold it on again. So it is out there (I hope the buyer has a DAT player). In summary, it wasn't finished, wasn't very different and you're honestly not missing much.

I think it actually only went for about £60.

Still wouldve been nice to hear an alternative mix to the one were all familiar with. Hopefully one day it appears online for us all to enjoy or just listen to

So did Mr Broudie tinker with it after the original release of the single (ie maybe to be used as a future B-Side)?

I always assumed it was done at the time of the Lipgloss sessions in summer 1993 after Stephen Street and Ed Buller had both had a go.

I'm fairly sure it was done shortly after the Lipgloss sessions had concluded and some time before the single release later that year because It's really just some embellishments rather than an overhaul of the final Ed Buller mix. I'm guessing Jarvis was just interested in trying something out for the prospective single release and wasn't too interested in the end. I don't think he's the most forthcoming communicator sometimes so I'm sure it was nothing against Mr. Broudie whose production style was maybe a bit too close to Stephen Street's and Ed Buller's anyway. Much more tantalizing is the idea of a single mix of Pink Glove but I don't think that ever really got underway as there's absolutely no sign of that anywhere.

Has anyone (Scott?!) read Ian Broudie's memoir and is there any mention of Pulp in it?

Eamonn, I can go one better.....

I went to the British Music Institute in Liverpool back in October for a talk/acoustic/q and a with Ian Broudie. I asked during the q and a about the Hillsborough Memorial show they headlined at Anfield back in I think it was 96, and he said even to this day - playing with such fantastic acts (Stereophonics, Dodgy, Holly Johnson) - it was the most emotional and moving show he has played.

After the night was finished, I got to spend 5 minutes with Ian and his son Riley - and we got talking about Lipgloss and Pulp, Riley chirps up that there is indeed a part of the book which mentions about the whole situation. In a nutshell, Ian did the mix of Lipgloss, and Jarvis was meant to get back to Ian. That never happened.

We already know from a member of Pulp with their response to my question about it, and he said it was "Shite".

In the same year 1994, Lightning Seeds released a song called Marvellous - and it contains the following lyric...."you sit there and wait for the phone to ring, when are they gonna call? Are they ever gonna call you at all?"

Makes you wonder if that was referring to Jarvis?

Ahahaha I'm no Uncle Psychosis! I'm Nephew Anxiety at best.

Eamonn - very hyped for NYE - I was actually at Banshee's tonight (did Bad Cover Version - it was a very bad cover version). The thought of Pulp, to ring in the new year, is so incredibly enticing. Knowing it'll happen with such lovely people as yourselves makes it all the sweeter. (Yes, even you, Heather... take the compliment before I change my mind >:) )

As for my recent posting, well I can only apologise. Too much Newkie Brown and direct sunlight.
