Got my tickets booked. I genuinely considered not going as Edinburgh on NYE is a nightmare and tickets were bloody spendy. But of course I couldnt say no to seeing Pulp.
Fairly unwilling to shell out further for a hotel so Im also planning on staying out all night though being middle aged and sober Im not entirely convinced I have the stamina or the patience these days!
Itll all be worth it though, cant think of a better way to start the new year.

I caved-in and got tickets. Thought it would sell out quickly. Cost of travel wasn't too bad but I will be at the mercy of trains running on the way back. Accommodation, yeah, pretty pricey. Will just have to wean myself off gigs between now and Xmas.

As Giles Acrylic tweeted (with a link to the Hawley/Cocker tune "Happy New Year Baby"), hopefully the band make it a special night. They usually do, which is my main justification!

Wahey! Welcome to Auld Reekie, Eamonn!

I'm hoping for a few setlist curveballs, huge bore that I am. And may well be going for barrier. We shall see.

Yeah, its a beautiful place so was a relatively easy sell to the partner. Let's all meet up in 2023/24 - how are ye sorted for fountains?

Got one in West Princes St Gardens, where the gig's happening! A bright, brassily-trimmed teal affair stationed right under the looming crags of ye old castle. It's all coming together.

Glad ye all caved and are going :- P that's what life is about! That'll be a night to remember. Can't think of anything better than Pulp and fireworks and that time of year! All of my favourite things. Wouldn't it be great to hear Countdown and Happy New Year Baby!
On the subject of roughly that time of year, i would absolutely love to have a good recording of their version of I Believe in Father Christmas. I love the guitar and keyboards on their version.
Anyway, have a great time you lot!

Much as I would love to go to this (not to mention it would be my first trip to Scotland, there are 2 very practical reasons why I can't.)

1) No fucking money.
2) I work in hospitality, and getting ANY time off during the festive season would be like trying to swim up Everest.

We can dream, yeah, but I reckon this will be an all party anthems setlist. This will be a set for a general audience (and, presumably, televised)

Still a truly barnstorming take on Countdown could conceivably work. We know its a belter. But does the band beleive in it?

"Party Hard", maybe?

I agree that "Countdown" could work and "Party Hard" was always a crowd pleaser despite its lack of chart success.

How about Jarvis singing "Here comes the fear again, the end is near again" right before midnight? biggrin

It's not really been all-party-anthems so far! I think they'd need to add a few to the setlist for that to be the case - Lipgloss, Countdown, Party Hard are probably the three in mind.

I'm assuming it will be a relatively short setlist?

Pure conjecture but I predict they'll take the stage around 11:15, play a 6-8 songs, then have a 10 minute interval for the fireworks, then come back out for a 3-4 song encore. Off stage by official dictat by 12:30.

I don't know, maybe Edinburgh party's harder than London (of course they do!) but I can't see this publicly funded event going on too long after the ball drops.

Very happy to be proved wrong.

I'm also assuming this will be at least partially televised, so they'll need a telly friendly setlist. Does BBC Scotland usually air the Edinburgh celebration or do they stick to the broadcast out of Westminster?

The concert timings, on the website, are 21:00-00:50, including support.

So Pulp likely take to the stage between 22:00 and 22:30, there's a break for fireworks, and a bit of an encore!

There's about ten certainties (Disco 2000, Common People, Mis-Shapes, Babies, First Time, Sorted, Something Changed, Underwear, Hardcore, Sunrise). And that does leave a little room for them to mix it up a bit. We live in hope... I'm cautiously optimistic.

I strongly suspect Weeds II might not be returning to the setlist.

If they do it then fair fucks.

Realistically I do think Pulp are a band that have a clutch of hits and then everything else is either not going to be particularly known to the gig-going public, or fans will know it all pretty well, so I think they'd get away with mixing it up a bit more. There might be a rush for the bar if they play 'The Never-Ending Story', but probably not for 'Joyriders' or 'O.U.'.

If casuals hear the hits (Common People/Disco 2000/First Time/Babies/Sorted) then they'll come away satisfied regardless of what the rest of the setlist is like.

Im going to choose to be the cynic (as I always do) and say Ill be extremely surprised if the setlist changes at all for Hogmanay. Weve heard the reasons they wont change it, I dont think those reasons are likely to let up before NYE.

Then again, I might just be protecting myself from suffering disappointment/lost hope <\3

Blur were referenced - they've played lots of B-sides and forgotten tracks. Villa Rosie was given a live debut, for example, and consistently played.

Not to do Britpop associations, but they are peers, and if Pulp did the same, there's so much possibility for reviving amazing music from thirty years ago. Tracks like 'Love Is Blind' or 'Have You Seen Her Lately' or 'Seconds' or 'Sylvia' would be the type of thing. There's so much underloved stuff... imagine if Pulp showcased some of the forgotten tracks!

Im starting a manifestation circle in here for Countdown to be added to the setlist. Its not even been rehearsed according to Nick, and itll never happen, but its NYE, and therefore they could at least think about it. For meeeeee

I shall join you in this ritual dance, by moonlight in the forest glen, on old Samhain.

You can't make me throw my vinyl copy of Countdown on the pyre tho. "Oh mighty Pan, accept this offering of the "Countdown 1992-1983" double-CD compilation that I salvaged from the bin at Oxfam- the remixes are kind of alright".

In case anyone fancies a spot of afters, I'd put a good word in for the Banshee Labyrinth. Nice place to chat and on NYE I've been told there's karaoke until 5 - they're the spot I usually torment, but the couple who run the karaoke nights are Pulpheads themselves.
