Did it work? I can't decide. Like a parent eagerly urging their toddler to go forth and walk no matter how wobbily...I was hoping that this "lost classic!" / "Would have been huge as a single!" / "WTF? They ditched this for The Trees and The Weeds and all The Shrubs of Sheffield?!" (as we seemed to agree when the demo was shared on here back in the day - fifteen frickin' years ago, I think!) - well... I was hoping that it would catch fire in 2023 stylee amongst the casuals and ambivalents at the gigs and festivals, but I'm not sure it did.
Did they play it enough times for that to happen? I wasn't expecting it to be played at Bridlington - but when it was, I was then a bit taken aback that we didn't see it more regularly throughout the tour. Weeds, certainly, was favoured over it.
Still a bit mental that I've seen Pulp play both Weeds and After You, to be honest.
Actually, that's a point - it only featured in the encore at their own shows, didn't it?
Jarvis conducted the participation element for the intro very well, getting folk to clap along to the "Latin" beat but I think the choruses needed more of his full-blooded "After You's" rather than leave the instrumental to risk withering on the vine.
I think it probably peaked at the right point, the end, instead of letting it break down before one more build-up per the 2012 release, which may have had non-knowers checking their phones.
It may have fallen flat depending on where you were positioned in the crowd and how many people around you had crap attention spans or not.
But the demo still sounds the most natural and effective versh to me.
I get the sense that quite a few people were mystified/hadn't heard it before. Jarvis had to explain it on both nights (Christmas day DL and all that) and given it's lack of response I remember him something along the lines of " shouldn't have bothered" lol. It was ok hearing it but I maybe would have preferred Lipgloss. Seems churlish to complain now. And yes, Eamonn, the demo is the best version.
As I only went to Manchester, I didn't get to see them play it. I'm firmly in the "play something other than hits" camp so on that basis, it would have been nice to hear it.
I agree that the 2000 demo is better than the 2012 version. I have always said that this song had Chris Thomas' name written all over it. I seem to remember Jarvis saying in an interview that they had recorded some material with him that was nearly finished before moving onto Scott Walker so let's hope it sees the light of day in future.

Oh dear, that's so sad. Don't listen to them Jarvis, we want to hear all sorts of songs not just the hits!
It went down very well at Bridlington, in fact it sounded like a lost hit. I think it worked well - it's just not one of my favourite Pulp songs - but it was warmly received. (Mind you, Silence probably would've been...)
It went down really well when I saw them play it at Hammersmith - the crowd around me were really into it, shouting out the chorus. It's a banger live.
I tried to singalong to the verses but Jarvis kept changing the words slightly, so I had to give up.

Not complaining that they played it, but Lipgloss would have been my first choice of the songs they didnt play. However, they have two new songs and they wanted to play them and see what the reaction was. I dont see anything wrong with that, after all Common People was a new song when I first heard it at Theatre Royal Drury Lane all those years ago.
I enjoyed it live, it seemed to lack a bit of character though, wouldve much preferred like many have said Lipgloss, however im happy i got to see After You live anyway as it was a complete surprise when i found out they did it at Brid.
Thought it was great fun but did feel a bit stilted opening the final encore. Maybe it wouldve slotted in comfier somewhere in the middle of the main set. And then move, say, misshapes to an encore perhaps?

The encore is when everyone is begging for old fan favourites - "Lipgloss!", "Razzmatazz!", "She's a Lady!", "Bar Italia!" - perhaps a song the band released in 2013 isn't going to go down quite the same way?
Maybe it should've gone after the Weeds songs.
I loved it, but I still really would've preferred Lipgloss. I think most fans would've. And it's a shame that they're probably never going to play Lipgloss live again, and that they've got it into their heads that they just can't - they tried it last time, and their perfectionism prevented them from giving it a whirl even though the Auto version of it is so fantastic - even if more dates are announced, I don't expect to ever hear them play one of my favourite songs by them. Lipgloss is their great white whale, their breakthrough single, and I wish for it more than any other song... and seems others agree...

Its a difficult one cos so much of Lipgloss is studio gubbins and overdubs. It's packed and busy and difficult to play live. It was sound checked before the 2012 Sheffield show but not played. I love it though.
When they played Lipgloss at Brixton in 2011 I remember Jarvis made a big point of bringing on Hawley and saying "we find this very difficult to play so we've brought on a little help". I loved hearing it but but have made my peace they just won't play it again.....unless Russell fancies coming back for one night only (one can dream).
