On the 10th of November 2023, Steve Mackey - musician, innovator, and heartthrob extraordinaire to legions of Pulp fans - would have turned 57.

The abrupt news of Steve's death, in early March, sent shockwaves through the British music world. The band recorded their own public tributes, but aside from the band's performances of Something Changed this tour (always dedicated to Steve), there has been little opportunity for fans to register their own feelings. It was a piece of news that took everybody off guard, and now that things have settled after a few months' distance from the news,

I am going to be producing a digital-only edition of Pulp People in memory of Steve Mackey.

The contents will be entirely dedicated to Steve, his life, his legacy, and fans' recollections of our beloved bassist.

It will be compiled from fan submissions. You can write about Steve, about his musical impact, about his bass playing, about his production, about his look, about whether you fancied him (if you fancied him), make it personal if you want to. You can write a poem, if you want. You can remember a time you met him. Please send photos if you have them, do send art if you wish to. There is a certain level of engagement we'll need, otherwise the whole thing will just be too slight - and that's not a worthy memorial to the man - so I'm going to post it on Facebook, and Twitter, too.

The plan is to release this issue - free to access, free to read - on his birthday, in just under four months' time. We can send it to the band, too.

There's absolutely no money involved. It's basically just going to be a free online e-book, hosted on Issuu or something similar.

PM submissions to me here, or message me on Twitter (my twitter handle is @Pulpitude), or PM me and ask for my email.

If you have any questions, please feel free to let me know.

I haven't spoken to anyone from the original magazine about this. I don't have contact details for Alex Deck, and I have no idea whether she's even associated with Pulp; the only other person, really, is Mark Webber himself. So this is a fan-led thing, and it's a responsibility that I am more than happy to inhabit fully. I would've mentioned it at Shakespeare's but I wasn't there, so you're hearing about it now.

A most worthy endeavour. Nice to hear Jarvis give a shout-out to Steve's family in the audience last night.

That's a lovely idea, lipglossd. Would love to read that. There was a Bowie book done for charity by the fans after he died called My Bowie Story and it's really well worth a read and like you're suggesting it ranged from people who had met him, had lots of correspondence with him to more regular stories across the globe and age. A great read. Would be lovely to see something similar for Steve. Hard to believe still.

Very nice. Hope to contribute to this. I'm digitising my Pulp scrapbook at the moment - possibly turning it into a flipbook.

 Sounds amazing!

Just wanted to also say, thank you to everyone who's already responded to this, as well as the kind comments upthread.

So far I've had about 15 responses, which is already more than I expected to receive so soon. Lots of people have reached out to share their love got Steve - it's very affirming, and I hope that the final product will stand as a reminder of that enduring love from fans.

I may not have anymore tour tickets, but between this and the Russell interview, there's lots of Pulp to keep me occupied! (And don't worry Stephen- this hasn't sidelined my work on that interview, I intend to have a draft of that finalised by next week.)

So, a little update to this:

I've spoken to Alex Deck - which is a bit wow! to me, to be honest. We had a little chat and there's some changes. This won't be called "Pulp People". I'll freely admit that I leapt into the idea very keenly and with no idea that I'd be able to consult the people who actually made Pulp People happen, and I won't be using the name; which is absolutely understandable, that there's a lot of history there and I don't want to appropriate that even if it's been dormant so long.

But Alex was very encouraging about the project, urging me to go ahead and get some good memories! Of course it'll still be heavily inspired by Pulp People, and the conceit is that I'm asking Pulp people to write in etc, but I've had a think and I'm going to call it "Hardcore". It seemed like a good title, what with TIH being Steve's proudest Pulp song, and the fact that I'm asking 'hardcore' Pulp fans for contributions.

If you'd like to get involved, easiest way is to sling me a PM! Just let me know what you'd like to submit. Deadline for actually sending things into me is 1 October, but if you need more time, just let me know :)

Righty ho then! Provisional deadline for this is 1 October, so if you want to contribute and haven't got in touch yet, please let me know. I picked an early deadline in case people needed more time (as these things have a tendency to run over schedule). So no worries if you need more - just get in touch.

Excited to see how things turn out.
