Oh fuck! Really? C'mon, he was probably only responding to Jarvis asking every fookin nite whether we were sorted for E's and Wizz and did we care for some weed.

Long shot but can anyone remember who it was that Jarvis recited before Like a Friend on the Friday night? All I can remember is one of the quotes was saying that singing is one of the best ways to get your point across.

From setlist.fm, it was this:

Did anyone else notice the snow/confetti during Something Changed? I know it was meant to be a semi serious song but I couldn't help having a sly chuckle remembering what Jarvis and Mark said about "The Day that Never Happened"

My ticket was so wet they had trouble scanning it and were asking me to look for it on my phone, which I might have managed given 10 minutes, but then the scanner magically worked after all. Just as well I was quite early and there wasn't a massive queue behind me.

I've never been around sniffer dogs, looks like they can sniff things out from about a mile away, they don't go right up to people. The one at Brid just walked casually up the queue and looked like it was out for a nice walk along the sea front.

On the topic of security at the arena, i entered the queue behind a lady with a bag, bear in mind the gates had just opened and the guy scanned and checked the lady and then just let me straight through. I thought bloody hell, so much for security here then.

I was also in block 219, Sarah!

Looking on the Facebook page it appears that I also stayed in the same hotel as Candida, though sadly didn't see her when I went down to breakfast.

It's taken me a little while to settle down after being there on Saturday. I must admit when the tour was announced I was a little unsure of the need for it. It's always nice to see Pulp, yes, but none of us are getting any younger, and without it sounding too blunt, this is nearly just half of Pulp (and big wow to Candida for managing the arthritis to keep on playing) and with the Jarv Is... band alongside minus Serafina.

Perhaps we now consider the Jarv Is members part of the latest iteration of Pulp? I notice the Jarv Is... merch shop has now disappeared. Is that a sign things are evolving (yes, yes, yes) or just me being a little keen for new stuff?

Anyway, my concerns about it all were completely and utterly not needed. I've been lucky that a lot of the Pulp gigs that I've been to have often seemed to be put down as 'events' - Birmingham Halloween, Auto, Royal Albert Hall, the last one at the arena last time etc. And yet I've never seen a Pulp crowd go as mad as it did on Saturday. The initial couple of songs had the place bouncing - the reaction to Disco 2000 was brilliant. The stage show with lighting, effects made it so different to the previous reunion - and the Jarv Is... members have given the band something new yet at the same time kept the songs true to themselves. It was possibly the best I've seem them play. Jarvis seems to be conserving energy at times (I don't blame him, I literally nearly fell over when I started walking again after standing for 2+ hours - I hate getting old) but this has been channelled into creating such a great show.

The Glory Days ending is just perfect. You really don't know whether to watch the performance or the back drop. It's such a great way to end the show and nod towards Pulp past as well as present. The comment about Steve's family being there on Saturday was lovely. Jarvis seemed to choke up a bit at that point too. I really hope that his family know how much he was loved. Yes, I suspect this whole reunion was probably a pension booster and to put some money aside for Steve, but this really is a show made with love.

In fact when reflecting on it it felt like the show was a celebration of everything Pulp stand for - love, togetherness, being who you want to be and doing it with humour.

Hymn for the North was my jaw dropping moment. "Nobody here will have heard this song"....Oh my God, it's happening! I have no idea what it means - but surely, surely they won't just leave that song there? With that, and then the unreleased Jarv Is songs - Slow Jam, Lockdown, Proceed to the Route and the Jarv Is members taking park in the tour - you have enough tracks there for an EP already. Or am I just being greedy and wanting more?

I've sat here patiently for my chance to go to the reunion. I have children and can't just go to gigs anymore. I seem to be living the His n Hers life. And even if I could, prices dictated I could only really do one for this part of the tour. I'm so pleased I chose the one I did.

I bloody love this band.

I think that it's a good idea to duplicate these things as they tend to disappear from YouTube. I have also uploaded the alternative Brixton video.

The bandwidth should be fine because all the files are on hosting sites. It's only the main index that is on my site.

I have a box full of VHS tapes that certainly contain some Pulp material. I doubt that there's anything that isn't already out there but perhaps some of it is better quality. Unfortunately, none of them are labelled so if I were to use one of these conversion services, I may end up with Coronation Street from 1998 biggrin.

Do they still do programmes for concerts? Pulp didn't bother this time round or last reunion but hardly surprising, given they can't be fucked with press and promo. Couldn't see one for Blur at Wembley last weekend either.

But then I think I've seen Pet Shop Boys, Soft Cell and Human League (the latter for album-specific shows) have them on-sale in the last year or two for tour gigs. Maybe the latter three having fanbases that skew older might have something to do with it.

finally home, sadly at work.

arrived in manchester, checked in and took my paid "music tour". i put that in quotes because the young man had very little to show me and i had to explain who the Fall were. all that being said, it was great seeing the sites of a city that musically shaped me. just wished i got my money's worth. but we all have to start somewhere. and for this young lad, I was one of his Guinea pigs. got to have a few pints in a bunch of pubs, and bought some records.

day 2, i arrive in Matlock Bath. had a great time looking around. great seaside-esque town. but kept running out of things to do. which became a day/night of heavy drinking. whilst waiting for Richard's show, i noticed that a small grip of tickets in section 104 became available and snatched one quickly. Hawley's show was massive. and the band was cooking something fierce. i was about 5 meters from the stage, which was about 2 meters off the floor. but me being an overly fed, tall american. people were displeased with me standing so close. i explained how i traveled from afar. and felt validated. He played a lot of tracks from Further. which i don't mind, he never got a chance to tour it. but not having been able to see him since 2007, there was a lot of other material that i've never seen live. but again. an amazing show, couldn't have been more elated.

day 3, i arrive in sheffield hungover and soaked. check in. passout. meet up with a handful of you lovely folks. it was such a pleasure meeting up with like minded people who i could chat with. and was an absolute highlight of the trip. forever indebted to Weej, who was kind enough to give a packed car of newly made friends, a ride to the arena. only to then drop us off and find parking outside of the sold out lot, in the pouring rain.
whilst waiting to get in, i could not for the life of me get my ticket to load on my phone. panic attack sets in. i'm drenched, waiting on an unorganized queue. i'm now shaking from cold and fear. my phone just can't get a strong signal. the Mighty Sturdy turns around, gives me his hot spot. and presto change-o my ticket appears. thank you, Mark!
the arena just seems logistically unprepared. vendors were packed to the wall, people couldn't get through. i arrived to my section just as Richard began his opener. he had a lovely set. even though i saw him only 24 hours ago, it felt like my first time in a long time, again. Pulp hits the stage. We all know how perfect it was. wished they would have done one track from 82-92. but that's just me being selfish, i suppose. only bit i was bummed about, was the woman behind me who would either scream talk during the show, or start belting out completely atonal/out of tune lyrics. overall, i was happy i went. that evening I go to Fagans, and in walks Richard's harmonica played, Clive. I chat with him a bit. man was lovely. and seemed to have all the time in the world for me, even though he was with his own group of friends. i tried my best not to overwhelm him and tried to end the chat as quickly as he would let me. again, top gentleman.

day 4, i take my own tour of sheffield. see many places mentioned by jarvis and richard. and walked my ass off. but wouldn't have had it any other way. was so happy to have crammed in as much as i could. had a blast doing so. i get to the venue early, and wait in the queue. 2 minutes later, fellow american, Sayed, shows up on the same line. we wait together and pass the time. doors open, and at 6pm we immediately go to the front of the stage. two, too-tall tourists, FRONT and CENTER. we were a wall to be reckoned with. i felt awful, but again. i traveled this far....suck it!
7:45 and richard hits the stage. i realized i was now even closer than i was in Matlock. 3 nights of Hawley. utter bliss. same set. except night one he closed with 'Heart of Oak'. This time it was 'Is There a Pill'. Watching the way the band just kept smiling to each other, and seeing how much they loved it and worked off of each other's energy, made it all the better.
Pulp hits the stage earlier. after witnessing the first show, i knew when my phone needed to be out to capture the moments. such a visually entertaining and cinematic performance. it was funny when someone played a wrong note, and i see Jarvis smiling at Mark, Mark smiling back, and then both of them turning to smile at Candida, who is already smiling. He seemed to come out much quicker for the beginning of the first encore. 'glory days' montage highlighting the pulp of the past was a nice tribute. and then when i see him look at his watch after glory days, i turned to Sayed...and both of us were in glee. another song!!! same setlist...kinda was a bummer. but same setlist plus one...I'll take it!!! Jarv and Cand sitting next to each other was such a lovely sight.

Jarvis is just a goddamn icon. what a performer. been worshipping the man for almost 30 years, and he made every emotion feel validated. having seen him perform in the states in one way or another, 5 times. this was the closest i've ever been. an emotional night. watered up a handful of times. This. This has been a constant in my life since '94. music has always mattered the most to me. but certain acts during my crucial and formidable years, can certainly overcome me emotionally. frisson, takes over my whole body.    but, also, you see. only 5 months ago, my wife of 15 years, and together for 20. had unexpectedly become attracted to another woman. we never fought. still are best of friends. and have now started a trial separation. the rug was pulled out from under me. we have toured the world together. this is my first time overseas without her for decades. i needed this trip. i needed to do something for myself for once. i felt alone. and being there with all of these people. seeing a band, that has almost no fanbase from where im from. but all these people love it as much as me. it felt like a church. all these emotions both personal from my mental holiday, and life long of the love of music. this concert became something more than i ever expected it to be.

day 5, back in manchester. i go up to prestwich to do my own Mark E Smith tour. and had a lovely day. went back into the northern quarter and just had a nice day of leisure.

overall. a trip of a life time. a spiritual journey. two cities that mean so much in this anglophile's heart. and meeting a fantastic group of great pulp fucking people.

Ah Rob, what a story. I'm so glad you made the most of your trip. Sorry we couldn't meet up in Fagans or The Wash for a natter. Looks like you got so much out of this visit, and well-deserved by the sounds of it.

By the way, where did poor Weej get parking in the end?

Just heard Damon talking about someone he spotted from Argentina being very emotional at their BBC gig they played there. I hope it was the guy who was at Sheffield. Also hope he got to get loaded up on magic monkey juice as well.

Ha, great towels. Shame theyre white. I had to go back for a Pulp tote when I realised there was no way I could cluster my goods against my chest all night. £30! That stung. No regrets.

Good selection of lyrics on the tea bags

I have thought a bit about how the Pulp lyrics now on display in my house (tucked into the oven handle) are from one of the few songs I don't really care for, lyrics-wise, but am just going to have to live with that now.

Haha, glad I'm not the only sucker who bought the tea towel and tea bags I love anything tea related so I got the tea, the tea towel and the tea caddy. In my defence, I'm wise with money in other ways
About the sniffer dogs. I was surprised about the security checks at the gig I went to. It was just a search but I haven't been searched in about 15 years. What kind of audience were they expecting! Cup of tea is all I want these days. Imagine travelling all the way from Argentina to be turned away.
Rob, I logged on really to say I enjoyed reading your post earlier. I am so glad you got to do that trip and for being brave enough to go ahead and travel alone. You only live once, go and do it. And what a special tour to see them on. You picked a good one for sure. You describe that feeling so well regarding the emotion of being there with all these people that feel the same way you do. What a special band.
This tour in particular has moved me a lot. Now I have been known to well up when someone gets voted off of Strictly so I am a bit pathetic that way with the waterworks but god my eyes welled up a few times at the gig. I turned to my brother early on in the gig and said make sure you enjoy this because they don't come around too often and this could be the last time. There's been 10+ year gaps of when we've seen them. At this stage, they've just gradually become inextricably linked to my childhood and formative years and beyond. They've soundtracked everything. I just had a huge sense of mortality this time around maybe for various reasons and how I don't want the journey to ever end.

Cheers Rob! we were indomitable, at least until the moshers boinged me all over the place during common people. Didn't hear any complaints so hopefully we weren't too inconvenient, but... no regrets!!

Was great to meet you and hope we get another shot at them in NY :)

Hi Rob I was so happy to read your story about your trip over here. It's a shame we couldn't find more time to hang out. I'm still on a total high after both the Sheffield gigs and can't stop thinking about them. I keep trying to get people I know interested but to no avail. I bloody love Pulp as well!

Has anyone noticed the minor lyrical alteration to "Glory Days"?

On the album:
"Come and play the tunes of glory, raise your voice in celebration"

Live 2023:
"Come and play the tunes of glory, raise your voice in exaltation"

Also, I might be wrong but I'm sure he sings "I promise I won't sell these dreams to anybody else..."
