These things probably get a bit tiresome, but I've bit the bullet and am now running a Pulp song-ranking tournament thing on Twitter, if anyone's interested. Realistically, it'll probably get very little attention and Common People will win anyway - but still just a bit of fun.

The first polls are up now. I've done it so the Island albums are represented in their entirety, with select choices from Fire and Intro and some B-sides to boot, to keep it a manageable number. Which, of course, means that Someone Like the Moon is automatically represented while some choicer cuts aren't... but still, whatever. I resisted the urge to put Silence in there, at least.

So far, these songs are through to the next round:

- This is Hardcore
- Do You Remember the First Time?
- Bar Italia
- Live Bed Show

Death II came within two votes or so of besting Live Bed Show, but it's out - so are Happy Endings, Dishes and Roadkill.

Early doors in the next two heats, but Joyriders is leading Mis-Shapes, while I Want You is beating A Little Soul but losing to Razzmatazz.

The percentage of votes the winning songs get will factor into how they're paired off for the next round, so that part of it does matter.

Into the Round of 18 now - here are the songs that remain...

- Common People
- Do You Remember the First Time?
- Disco 2000
- Babies
- This is Hardcore
- Something Changed
- Sorted for Es and Wizz
- Lipgloss
- Razzmatazz
- Mis-Shapes
- F.E.E.L.I.N.G.C.A.L.L.E.D.L.O.V.E.
- Underwear
- Pink Glove
- I Spy
- Pencil Skirt
- Monday Morning
- Like a Friend

...and, of all songs, Seconds.

I have to admit I'm surprised by this. Seconds has been by far the breakout star of this tournament, getting as far as the top 18 songs. It's beaten many strong songs already including The Fear and Party Hard, and although it probably doesn't have a great shot at making it to the semi-finals - in fact as it stands, it's going out this round - it's currently beating I Spy. Perennial fan favourite I Spy!

OK, so a huge part of it is the luck of the draw, but also I had absolutely no clue Seconds was so popular. It's a bit of a shock, really! I really like the song but I didn't know fans loved it so much.

In other news, Sorted is going out - right now it's losing to Lipgloss and F.E.E.L.I.N.G.. I wonder if a certain Mr Webber has been voting..

Got the final eight now.

- Babies
- Razzmatazz
- Lipgloss
- Do You Remember the First Time?
- Pink Glove
- Common People
- Disco 2000
- This is Hardcore

Something Changed and F.E.E.L.I.N.G. were close to getting through - they'd round out the top ten.

Gonna be two quarter-finals now, with the above list split into four, and then the top two of each group going head-to-head, then the grand final. My expectation is that it'll be Common People vs This is Hardcore, the band's most popular song pitted against its most highbrow and arty one.

There've been a few surprises so far - Pink Glove making it this far, Something Changed not, Seconds outperforming Sorted and Mis-Shapes, Help the Aged falling flat on its face. It'll be interesting to see if the next round throws up any shocks. Disco 2000 only very narrowly made it through - it qualifies over Something Changed via a margin of just 0.8%!

Having to choose just one out of Disco 2000, Like a Friend and Razzmatazz was not amusing

Haha, I struggled with that too! Voting on my own personal twitter is hard enough without actually running the bloody thing.

In the end, poor Like a Friend struggled given the competition... I actually would pick Disco 2000 if a gun were to my head, but plumped for Like a Friend given Disco's wider popularity... and then Disco very nearly didn't make it!

I guess that's the thing, people second-guess which song might make it through and vote accordingly. The tyranny of choice presents its own issues. A track like 'Something Changed' might be many peoples' second-favourites, but not their first choice...

Still, roll-on the quarter finals, once I can draw the groups (it's mostly based off what % they get, which is admittedly imperfect). They promise to be absolutely murderous, once I've drawn them - a Pulp version of Sophie's Choice. But then, where's the fun otherwise?

Tell you what, though, it's gratifying to see certain tracks make it this far. They don't play Lipgloss live much, but it's got through tough ties to get here. Same with Seconds, which just got knocked out - and Like a Friend did very well too, seeing as it's just a B-side. Nothing past 1995, save for This is Hardcore (which is the top-performing song so far), has done very well - maybe Pulp's twitter following is mostly composed of hardcore Russell Senior loyalists!
