Hi guys,

I've got some holiday time coming up in early September, and as it's 10th anniversary of the Motorpoint Arena concert in December, I'm planning to take a "cultural pilgrimage" up to Sheffield. I'd like some advice as to where to go, where not to go. I've got some ideas for where I'm going to, like Forge Dam, the Leadmill, Division Street,  (where Jarvis fell from the window) Catcliffe maybe The Wicker, (but I've heard that it's a notoriously rough part of town so I might avoid it. Might take in a bit of Chesterfield as well because...you know (if that's the case I'd like to find the Chesterfield Arts Centre - but it isn't easy to pinpoint on Google, there are A LOT of arts centres in Chesterfield - Planet X Records if it's still around and of course St Mary's and All Saints)

 

So if anyone can help me and give me some advice, I would really appreciate it.

I went to the Washington for Sturdy's book launch in 2003. It's quite a decent pub. If my memory serves, Nick used to own part of it. They are on Facebook and have plenty of bands on by the look of it.

I never visit Sheffield without spending a couple of hours in Record Collector on Fulwood Road in Broomhill.

Still, for people of our bent, the concrete channel behind the station is a quick win if you're arriving by train.

I lived on Penny Lane for a while at Uni, and little things like the shelter in the middle of the roundabout gave me a little kick every day

I think that's gone now, or on a different site. Google Street image from last October shows that Catcliffe Garage occupy those railway arches now.

 Well I'll take a look anyway. It's still a valid point on my itinerary.

 

As is the newly opened Indie Go bar at the Steelyard Kelham. Loads of music related artwork in the bar area including a Jarvis portrait on the wall (and on the men's toilets!) and a massive Pulp mural on the back wall.

When I did this years ago, I think I did the following:

- City School
- Mansfield Road (Jarv's childhood home was... I think 134? It's back from the main road, look for the yard next to Emily's Hair Salon)
- Stanhope Road is nothing to write home about but it's very close to the above
- The Hallamshire (now called Bloo 88 but the exterior is still the same - 182 West Street)
- Weston Park (for all the places named in David's Last Summer/the DYRTFT film)
- The Wicker / Sheldon Row (again the old factory building is long gone, but you can still get a bit of the atmosphere)
- The Washington

Rotherham Arts Centre was knocked down a few years ago sadly.

Most of these places aren't that exciting in and of themselves, so it al really depends on how nerdy you want to get!

Cheers Mark. If anyone knows where to go in Sheffield it would be you. biggrin

Did you mean Chesterfield Arts Centre? Pity. Do you know where it use to be? I've heard Castle Market has gone too. Is the National Music Centre still standing? 

I do want to see St Mary's and all Saints. I remember seeing it when the train I was taking to Sheffield pulled into Chesterfield and couldn't believe it was real.

 

I'm planning a 12 mile hike from Walton Dam all the way to Forge Dam if that's possible. According to Google it is but it seems to be a lot of back roads and country lanes so I better be cautious when planning my route. 

Im definitely going to The Washington. I believe that Indie Go is  nearby. I would definitely like to visit The Wicker but isn't it in a notorious rough part of town?

Maybe Psalter lane and say hello to Saskia or visit the Webber family home at Mill Stream Close in Chesterfield?
Pollards tea merchants on Ecclesall road and buy some tea from Russell's sister?

I don't like the tone of your post, Jason.

I am NOT going to Sheffield to deliberate stalk people. That is not not my intention AT ALL.

If I happen to meet certain people on my travels then ok, but I'm not going to impose myself on people's time and personal space. Those days are over for me.

You seem to know an awful lot more about where people in the extended Pulp family tree live and work, more so than I do or anyone else on this board - except maybe Mark Sturdy obviously. Is there something you're not telling us, Jason?

(Having said that, anyone who has seen my YouTube channel knows I'm somewhat of a tea connoisseur, so maybe I will make a visit to Pollard's. But I certainly won't make a drama about it).

If things happen while I'm up there, they'll happen. I'm certainly not going to force it.

The places I've mentioned are nicely Pulpy to visit..

The Wicker? I don't know if it's rough exactly, it's certainly a bit run down round there but I didn't feel unsafe wandering around. It's very close to the city centre so it's not like you're out on limb. Admittedly it's 20 years since I went so it might've changed since then!

I was looking at my photos from 2010/2011 today and I remember catching local buses all through the suburbs that are mentioned in Sheffield : Sex City. I also got said bus down to Banks Pottery. I had this gung ho intention of going in and saying I had come from Australia and you're still my favourite band yadda yadda yadda. Anyway I didnt. Just stood out the front and thinking F**k I'm a l-o-n-g way from home.

Resurrecting this thread, because I'm finally booked everything for my trip in September! I'll be there between 5th and 10 of September, so if any of you lot want to meet up and have a chat or something, I'll definitely be up for it. PM me for more details and contacts etc.

Oh and another thing, some of you know I have a Youtube channel, so while I'm up there I'm probably going to be doing some filming. It's not going to be anything grand - I'm not a professional film maker, I only have a second hand camcorder and a mid-range editing programme on a rickety old computer! But I hope it's going to be fun, and I make some great memories. Fingers crossed everything goes well, because i know it's only 2 weeks away but shit can go down in half an hour.

Here is what I'm planning for my title screen if all goes well.

Well I'm here.

Bit of a hike from Pond Street to the Hostel and when I got here found that the ladies dorm was being renovated, so I can't really unload my stuff and get exploring at the moment, but given the aforementioned hike I'm glad of the time to chill out and have a shower. Met some really nice people, couple of locals some students waiting to move into their dorms and some New Zealanders.

It's been blisteringly hot all day but it's beginning to cool down now. Have a feeling it might rain.

I'm sat outside Forge Dam Cafe! Sadly the child's toy horse ride has been permanently retired, but I've just had a cracking lunch - scrambled egg on toast with all the extras. Might have an ice cream after I've taken a walk through the park

Had a really long walk down from my hostel in Upperthorpe, down through the Ponderosa and Weston Park, down to the Botanical Gardens, through Endcliffe Park following the Porter Brook Valley Trail, through Whiteley Woods and Bingham Park to Forge Dam.

Going to walk back pretty much the same route and pick up on anything I missed on the way down. If I have time might take a detour to McKee's Gallery, but we'll see.
