Interesting article here about a new Ken Patten documentary - showing at Sheffield Docfest but there's some kind of link at the bottom of the article to a stream - looks like it's available until Wednesday 29th June.
A filmmaker and a musician who calls himself after Ken's "Studio Electrophonique" try and uncover as much as they can about the man and his home studio. Talking heads included Jarvis and he had the best anecdote about how Patten told the young Pulp how he had come-up with the idea of making vocoders out of toilet-roll tubes. There was old footage of other bands he recorded (ABC and Human League) but in terms of Pulp content, just the audio of the song What Do You Say?
Considering the lack of studio footage from the time and the fact Ken died over 30 years ago and kept a low profile, they did well to track down family and put together enough material to get a 1 hour doc out of it. Sean Bean, who lived just down the road in Handsworth, does a nice intro and outro voiceover.
Kind of in the vein of the Made In Sheffield films. Veterans of a scene talking about it with slim pickings in the way of original, source material. Worth a watch and fair play to the chaps who made it on a shoestring (ie an old iPad).
