He interviews an assortment of fellow hoarders and is interviewed himself, all part of the press for Good Pop, Bad Pop of which there seems to be plenty. Also a Spotify playlist of defining songs with quite a lot of what you might expect. It includes Tunnel, one of my absolute favourites. I am always intrigued as to what his relationship now is with some of the early material. Several songs have had outings for various reasons, either a tie in with a venue or on Wireless Nights say, so maybe he has got over some of the trauma of the Fire era and can appreciate some of the songs again.

Nice pics here on Instagram of a massive pile of books being signed.

Great interview with him. Apparently Olivia has a book out the same day.

Are there really 368 pages in Good Pop Bad Pop as per the different resellers websites (Waterstone did have it as 250 approx. previously)? Seems like a lot, the more the better I think. Maybe there's lots of photos of les objets.

Holy fuck, an audio clip from a late-70s Pulp rehearsal aired on the Radio 4 extract today (a few seconds of ramshackle music and an exclamation of shock by a pubescent voice as the sun streamed into the practice room).

Presumably that's also contained in the audiobook and hopefully there are other audio excerpts from Pulp's library.

If he's held onto that, God knows what other treasures are in the Pulp archive...

The Pulp iceberg only gets longer and longer it seems. If that exists, lord knows how much of the early and late 80s he's got in his arsenal.

The It era still remains a mystery...

I was reluctantly avoiding those radio 4 promos because I'm going to one of the book tour dates..
I wanted everything to be fresh and new..
Anywho, i relented last night and listened to them all, of course they were entertaining, the audio clip very brief but reassuring that he does appear to be suitably detached from these ancient tapes to share a little snippet..
But I'm a greedy man and now i just want more & more..
Anyroad, it serves as a taster for the book tour date, which I'm looking forward to now even more...

Looks great, I can't see if you need to book ahead of visiting and whether there is an admission fee.

It's free to enter, I popped along on Friday evening. Well worth a visit, there are plenty of Pulp relics there!

Really enjoyed those excerpts on Book of the Week (of course I did). I can just imagine my younger self, mind blown by these new revelations, scurrying upstairs with a tape to revise his drafts. As it is, maybe I'll do an edit or two on PulpWiki at some point if no one else gets there first...

Amazing to hear that bit of the first rehearsal of course. He got the band members for the first gig wrong though!

I guess the fact he used What Do You Say from the Ken Patten demo points to even Jarvis not having a copy of the whole thing, shame.

Don't know if anyone else has been nerdy enough to Google the Portasound PS-400 but there are a few demo videos of it on YouTube full of sounds and preset rhythms that are very familiar, ie they're all over Separations!

Just been reading about the exhibition, sounds amazing. Not much chance of me getting down to London... don't suppose anyone's managed to snap photos of the exhibits? Anyone know what the video footage is?

There wasn't any video footage when I was there. The replica of Jarvis' bedroom did have sound coming from the tape machine, it sounded like an early rehearsal... no hints of any songs or even much playing together, just some strumming! The audiobook was also playing at the other end of the downstairs room.

I took a couple of photos, attaching here some that I took because I wanted to read them carefully later!

Wow. Huge thanks for posting those.

Were there any more pages from the gig diary, or was it just those two?

I guess the sound from the tape machine will have been that first rehearsal, like on the R4 readings.

The only way I could realistically get to this would be to get a 4-hour coach down to London, and another one back up the same day. I'm currently debating with myself whether that would be absolute madness. (It'd also be really bloody annoying if he then did the same exhibition in Sheffield a few weeks later)

Just those two tantalising pages from the concert list, sadly! The exercise book is there, under glass, keeping its secrets! They've taken photos of about a dozen different pages, with the Pulp Manifesto, logo doodles, the notes about fashion and so on, which are being sold as limited edition prints (of 50 each, I think).

It's only a small, two-floor exhibition space, but it felt pretty special to be around so many of those objects and take it all in.

Update - concert list p1 is actually reproduced in the book!

Thanks for posting this, I didn't know about it so on a whim decided to skive off an hour early from work and go down this evening. The queue was already 50 people long or so. I was in the second batch of people and we got in shortly before 7pm.
We were led into the shop, and down a windy stairs where the exhibition is taking place. In a small room, Jarvis was standing with a mic and Chilly Gonzalez was seated at JC's Yamaha Portasound from the 80s ("He asked me to do this on Monday. You cant exactly get a Steinway down here so this Yamaha will have to do...").

A lucky 15 or so people got to sit on the benches at the sides of the musicians. The rest of us were herded into a room just off it, with wooden frames around glass making it look like an elephants phone-box. We peered out, straining necks. I always try to be aware of littler people when it comes to standing at gigs so I stood back as much as possible. Not a great view at all but at least I could hear everything.

Anyway, they performed Tearkerjer and Bombshell from Room 29 after which Jarvis informed us that Chilly had to go home to relieve his babysitter from child-minding duties.

Cocker then introduced his Hopf(?)guitar to us as the first one he ever owned and how it inspired him to write songs. Suddenly, the strap on his guitar gave-up and the guitar was completely out of tune ("This is too real" he said). Eventually an acoustic version of Little Girl With Blue Eyes was performed. Finally, he introduced us to his boom-box/drum machine, fired it up and sang and played Stepping Stone by The Monkees to which everyone knew, judging by the singalong.

It ended then so that the next batch of people could come down (apparently he did Paper Thin Hotel with Chilly on keys for the first group of people). Of course people wanted things signed and their pics taken. I wasn't bothered about that but knew I'd kick myself if I didn't try and speak to him. I was one of the last stragglers and a staff member was insistent that we leave. I think I felt emboldened by having seen Jarv Is...live in Madrid at the weekend so I just waited long enough for Jarvis to turn around and I quickly garbled in a quivery voice (second time I've felt way too self-conscious when I've met him) that I had enjoyed the gig on Saturday in Spain. He seemed very impressed that I had been to see it, he even kind of patted me on the shoulder as I left!

I knew I could probably get away with a geeky/music plans question as the previous fans had been saying stuff to him like "I'm obsessed with you! I dress up as you every year" (a girl in her 20s), so something different to that and the book seemed that it might be a welcome diversion.
Only afterwards I realised I could have mentioned that I'd heard the new version of Cuckoo Song just this morning but that might have been peak-geek.

So he said yes, they hoped to release another album, in the vein of the first one (i.e playing live and recording the songs to see how they sound afterwards) but that he hadn't listened back yet to the live renditions of new material. I told him the new tunes sounded great but that Slow Jam wasn't played(?!). As you'd expect, he said that 3 new ones at a festival was probably too much.

Conscious not to make him feel awkward (or me) and overstay, and mindful that the staff were eager to get the next crowd in, I heard him ask the staff how the queues were. They had grown! So there'll either be a fair few disappointed folk or he'll be there giving a few more mini-gigs tonight.

Oh and for anyone thinking of travelling to the exhibition, he said that it's running for another couple of weeks into June. I didn't get a chance to see it properly so I'll have to go back. I saw from Facebook that Scott Bar Italian travelled down to it recently so I'm sure he can give a verdict on whether it's worthwhile making a long trek to see it.

Yes, as Mulvey (loving the releases by the way mate) stated, I did indeed make the long journey from the deepest darkest depths of Preston to London - and if anything, I felt originally slightly underwhelmed by the exhibition as there was filming taking place in the basement, and we had to be quiet upstairs.

I felt slightly grumpy to be honest with such a long train journey, getting pissed on during the thunderstorms, and begrudgingly paying through the nose for alcohol..... but what a lovely little exhibition setup it was.

Signed the guest book and admired the prints, reading about the expenditure and atmosphere of some of the early Pulp gigs was quite funny...."We might make a profit"....

I was possibly in awe the most of the tape enclosed in the case of the early Pulp rehearsal, closely followed by the collection of Jarviss geeky glasses from over the years.

Eventually I got to wander down the steep wooden steps, I feel for anyone else with bad knees and height, as it crippled me getting down them steps and nearly knocked myself cuckoo on the roof!

The Jarvis bedroom as mentioned absolutely had hidden gems on the walls as Sturdy mentioned in his post - loved the tiny Portasound keyboard, if I got to play it - I'd be pressing two keys at once with one finger haha. Beat Of The Law was being played in that little cave room, always nice to watch that. Overall for a Pulp fan it's definately a must see - to the outsider, it might be a little "what the fuck", and not get it.

Shame we didn't have a Bar Italia meet really.
