Have been watching this on iPlayer and noted an unexpected but familiar voice

https://filmmusicreporter.com/2022/02/08/jarvis-cocker-scoring-bbcs-this-is-going-to-hurt/

well worth watching.

Yeah, he mentioned it on his Insta - actually all of Jarv Is are listed on the credits at the end of the programme. Not sure what of the incidental music in the first ep was by Cocker and Co.

The instrumental version of Tearjerker did get an airing though. Good show too. Ben Wishaw is great and was apparently a Pulp fan in his youth.

I think there are some new songs.  Episode 5 (or 6) has a song with a refrain of Fcuk That (I think) which I have never heard before.  Maybe there will be a Killing Eve like release on streaming services at some point.

From the Jarvagram:

This is Going to Hurt premiered last night & its my pleasure to tell you that JARV IS provided the original score for this TV adaptation of Adam Kays book. The soundtrack will be released physically by @roughtraderecords later in the year but in the meantime various cues will be made available digitally during the series run on BBC1. First up is the Main Theme next week.

I wonder will any of these feature on a second Jarv Is... album. They've already debuted two new songs live.

Between that, the Aline soundtrack, now the This Is Going To Hurt one and his book finally finished and out in spring; it's great to see he's kept busy in Lockdown.

I wonder if sound tracks are the future for musicians to find audiences. Have been listening to Annette by Sparks which is excellent and the aforementioned Killing Eve soundtrack introduced me to the superb Unloved.

The French Dispatch
streams on Disney+ from 16 February, so I have 3 days to watch it before my annual subscription ends on 19 February.

A new Jarv is... song wraps up the series as well. Suspect it is called This Is Going To Hurt.

I wonder if the new works - Bad Friday/Slow Jam (When love slows down) and proceed to the route will be an inclusion to this series and the forthcoming soundtrack?

The entire soundtrack now streaming in full on Spotify etc.

Not listened yet. Kinda glad that Slow Jam/Bad Friday and that other new Jarv Is... song previewed in Bognor don't seem to be on there which must mean a second Jarv Is album is also on the way. Between all this, the French Despatch soundtrack and his book/memoir, it's a pleasant surprise to see him getting less lazy in his middle-age.

This is so unexpected, nice surprise !

I enjoyed the french covers but was looking forward to original material.

This is going to hurt sounds like a mix between FC and Room 29, oddly. Listening to the rest now. There's almost as many songs as on Jarv Is debut.

Do you guys think there will also be a "real" Jarv Is record this year ? That would be a first, busy busy Jarvis.

I hope so. Maybe next year is more realistic. I'm seeing Emma and Serafina's band play live next month in a tiny venue. If I get a chance/am brave enough, I'll try and ask one of them afterwards.

Yeah probably next year for new material, or the fall at the earliest

Listen #2 and its a very strong record

A bit like Damon Albarn last record. Few songs and instrumentals inbetween. Nice enough to wait for a full length LP

but ! Mixing is weird between tracks they are not all at the same level. Sounds like a collection of Jarv is rejected songs or demos

This might explain why:

Listening now, couple of tracks in. Really liked the series and enjoying this a lot too. The title track is a potential classic I'd say.

Dark Wave sounds a bit like one of those mid '80s onstage jams, with the keening violin and insistent thud.

Interesting to hear Jarvis doing more stuff that's written to order - looking at this and the few things he / Pulp have done before in this vein, like Likely Stories and Like a Friend, giving him a brief seems to result in some pretty good results (and a decent level of productivity!). I guess French Dispatch could fit into this category too.

Only listened to once so far, but I love it. Much more of an album than I was expecting. I think the comparison with Room 29 is quite a good one - some of it feels like Room 29 with a band.

Having said that, 'Job Description' is my favourite and most like a 'Jarv Is ...' song I think.

Also, the album gets extra points for getting in a reference to 'Bully's special prize' from me.

As with Beyond the Pale, absolutely loving the violin in it too. Also, my musical knowledge is zero - I saw the mentions of Slow Jam above - Another One of Those Days sounds very similar to it to me - but I've only heard both songs once, one of them six months ago so I could be, as usual, very wrong.

One listen in too...its nice and fine but a lot of it does seem early drafts of songs. A little threadbare. Some interesting atmospherics as you'd expect for a soundtrack. I actually find the title track quite irritating. Whiny Jarvis, lazy list-lyrics (changing one word each time), repeated melody. Not really a full song but again, for 30 seconds play over a TV show, it fits the bill.

I like Adam's Nightmare but my favourite after one play is Another One Of Those Days. Again, lots of repeated melody which seems to be a feature of a fair bit of Jarv Is...but I'm a sucker for a couple of minor chords strung together. Lyrics quite poignant. I love Slow Jam but didn't immediately hear it in this, will listen out for it again. I think SJ is shaping up to be one of my fave Jarv Is... songs.

It took me half a dozen listens or so for Room 29 to click but I loved it after that, maybe the same will happen here. In terms of comparisons to previous work I hear more of the few tunes he did for the Neil Gaiman TV series as well as some early-solo stuff (rhythm of Dark Waves feels a bit like Fat Children) and I'm hearing a bit of the phrasing from I Found Myself Looking For God here and there.

Emma's violin seems to get a bit more Russell-squeaky-stabby every time round, doesn't it? I'm saying this is a good thing.

Also.... This is the third Jarvis/Jarv Is album in as many years. He hasn't put out this much 'product' in quick succession since Intro>HnH>DC. If he follows it up with a 'proper' album within the next 12 months that would truly be unprecedented. A late spurt?

Covid 19 woke him up maybe ? I guess few years ago he didn't want to be a singer anymore then realized it was actually a good job :D

I enjoy this record a lot. The way it sound unfinished, the sound... very strong record for a soundtrack.

Well, this is a welcome surprise! I was expecting nothing and it feels like having a 2nd Jarv Is... album. Way more songs than I thought there would be and they're all pretty damn good!
