I always loved this track. They put so much work into it and it knocked a lot of contemporary house/ Warp releases out of the park in terms of sounds and creativity. It could've really done something if it had been marketed for clubs (those Parrot and Winston remixes were a travesty). I know it was performed live, but I was just wondering how. Pulp have always seemed quite averse to using backing tracks on stage and I'm very curious what Nick would be doing on the drums when playing it live. Does anyone know how it was performed and if there is a live recording out there? Many thanks for any info. Also, does anyone live in Edinburgh or Newcastle? Some quality Pulp devoted nights coming up on the 23rd of March and May the 11th.

BTW, while I'm here- why wasn't Nick in the Do You Remember the First Time? video? Ta!

Jason's the only one amongst us who witnessed the spectacle. Over to you Jason...

I did ask Nick what it sounded like live, but all i got out of him was "terrible probably!"

They played it at "The Day that Never Happened" which was recorded on video, I'm guessing the band still hold a copy of this because it was used as part of the video for "Death Goes to the Disco", a few seconds of which can be seen on the "Hits" DVD.

If memory serves..
Everyone was playing keyboard bits except Russell & Nick.
It appeared to last forever but i think it was blended into MLG.
They played death comes to town twice for some reason.
As for recordings, i think it was recorded on a portastudio multitracj recorder.
So it's kind of in separate bits, just needs a little mix to bring it together.
The whole thing was filmed and a cursory amount was worked on to accompany the proposed next single.

I asked Webber about the recording and he said the recording is just the sound engineer's headphone mix - so a desk recording with certain instruments solo'd at different times. Bit of a frustrating listen apparently.

Dunno if there's some other recording as well. All academic of course!

...Even so, it'd be pretty awesome to hear in a 'behind the curtain' kind of way

†I've looked over it, in slow motion and I think he is. I compared it to the stills on Pulpwiki, and I think Nick is in the group shots to the far right of the screen, right opposite Candida's feet, with his legs stretched out beside Russell. For some reason, the video crops him out, but you see his hands, counting out what looks like £20 notes, or playing cards or photos.

Man, that Day That Never Happened gig is the real live Pulp holy grail, and judging from the brief bits used in the Pulp movie, the existing footage of it is certainly in watchable condition.

Didn't This House start off in its live form with some Pulp preamble Bingo sketch leading to the whole crowd shouting "House" when all their numbers came up? Jason, did you witness that?

Yes, we played bingo, i didn't hear all the numbers though.
I know that Jarvis has said in the past that this show was a bit of a disaster but it wasn't, it really wasn't.
It was a typical Pulp show for the time, albeit with some extras that didn't quite work out.
It was very quiet though, very quiet, no wonder the leaf blower things made such a racket fduring she's dead.
I think Russel had the face on too, he was wrapped in foil for quite some time and appeared reluctant to remove it
Until Jarvis removed some it.
He's no Jimi Hendrix when he can see what he's playing never mind blinded with foil.

About 10 seconds of the band trying out the dry ice then performing "Death Goes to the Disco" can be seen at the start of the "Home Movies" section of the "Hits" DVD.

I'm just wondering now how often they played this?
I'm sure i went to a few more gigs in '88-'89, where it's possible it appeared?
Sorry, just don't remember.
I think I'd be more interested in hearing 200% and bloody thirsty again to be honest.
I know a demo was recorded as well as live outings.
Someday?

Seeing as the band themselves will never do it, who's up for forming a tribute band to do faithful versions of '80s Pulp? We could do a Separations show with the album in its entirety, then a second half of all those lost 1987 songs. And similarly a Freaks show (ha!) with a second half of Masters highlights and other stuff from the time. Stage draped with bogroll, tinfoil everywhere, bingo call at the start of the encore, Tim Allcard up a stepladder reading his poems... who's in?

(NB I'm not entirely serious. I wish I was.)

Defo in, always wanted to dance (if not dress) like a cossack. Would like to sing vox to Leo VK's version of Going Back To Find Her.

We need a crazy drummer to smash his kit during the ballads and have sex with a variety of soft fruit if the audience starts drifting. Where's Fred these days?

OK, you can be Antony Genn. It does mean you have to go off and join a cult after the gig though.
