Hi im new to this forum, but am extremely interested in pulp demos. I want to see if anyone knows where the ken patten demo is. Like, if pulp gave it to john peel then shouldn't john have the tape? I know that he died some time ago, and that it would probably be rude to ask for it, but I just really want that tape! Of course I dont mean to be rude tho. If we need to contact anyone for information about the tape, we should definitely do it!!

The other tracks from that demo were re-recorded for the Peel session and the re-recorded versions can be heard on the Peel compilation. Unfortunately, the Ken Patten versions have never seen the light of day.
I've never come across anyone who has a copy of the full tape. Even ex-members from the time who otherwise have a pretty good collection of tapes and stuff haven't been able to lay their hands on it when asked.
I'd be amazed if there was a copy in the John Peel archive. He must have been given thousands and thousands of tapes over the years, I'm sure it'll have ended up in landfill long ago.

I presume the guy who made the statik records comp would have had a copy?
Anyroad, these versions aren't going to be dissimilar to the Peel session are they?
Apart from the drum sounds.

These are the people I asked about the Ken Patten demo:
Peter Dalton - thought there might be a copy at his parents' somewhere, but never came through
Wayne Furniss - has a lot of other tapes from his time in Pulp, but couldn't find the KP one
Jamie Pinchbeck - doesn't have anything
Nigel Burnham (Statik Records, put together Your Secret's Safe With Us) - doesn't have anything, but referred me on to...
Keith from Fairview Studios (did the actual mastering and compiling of Your Secret's Safe With Us) - doesn't have anything
Mark Webber - thinks he's heard a copy of part of it, but it cuts out midway through a song. Suggested Jarvis (or his mum) may have the original
There will be a copy out there somewhere, but I'd say the hopes of us getting our hands on it are pretty forlorn really!
You're right, it probably won't be much different to the Peel session, and we're fortunate that we at least have some version of all the songs. It'd still be interesting to hear as a curio though.

It's worth noting, I suppose, that all the above conversations (except Webber) took place between about 1997 and 2002. So things might have changed in the interim, tapes might have been found at the back of wardrobes etc. I'm not ringing round them all again though, sorry!

Wow guys thxx for all the info!!
So first of all @Sturdy: how did you contact them was it from the phone? or in person? could I be able to contact them? and could you probably give me their info so that i can? (hopefully that wont be too creepy)
2nd Did Wayne tell you about the other demos, could he possibly have the Rotherham demo or the spice demo?
@Jason i would totally but im only 16 so they wouldn't take me seriously, but if Sturdys done it then i guess ill give it a desperate try

Well... It was on the phone and in person. But the difference was I was interviewing them for my book, so as part of that I was able to ask them if they still had any tapes I could hear. If I'd just been a fan on the cadge for tapes, I don't think they'd have been as obliging.
Wayne did have the Spice and Rotherham tapes, and he played them to me when I visited him to interview him in 1997 - that's where the descriptions of the tracks in my book come from. He was clear that he didn't want to give out copies though, so the descriptions are based on me scribbling down notes as I listened!
I don't have anyone's contact details to hand (it was a long time ago and I think my old address book is buried at the bottom of a box in my garage). Even if I did though, I'm not sure I'd be comfortable passing out phone numbers. Some of them might still be in the phone book! And there's Facebook, Twitter, Google...

Yeah, Spice and Rotherham are the real curios from that time given that there are quite a few songs that we've never heard.
I agree, the Ken Patten demo would be nice to hear but the other two (containing 5 unreleased songs - How Could You Leave Me?, Why Live?, Barefoot in the Park, Teen Angst and The Heat of the Day) would be holy grail. It's possible that Jarvis still has a copy; he performed two ancient songs on that TV programme about 10 years ago so he might have listened back to old tapes for reference. There are probably hundreds of tapes in ex-members' sheds/attics etc. but they have either forgotten about them or don't see the point in listening back let alone sharing them.
Yea I totally agree with Ian, those other demos are the ones we should go after. Though idk if they'd ever respond to me, but things can change I guess, maybe Wayne had changed his mind, or maybe its up to me to change his mind. Idk i'll give it a shot.
