Grandfather's Nursery is the only other song from the WLL sessions you could add to that list.
Possibly the My Body May Die (I really love that song) sessions and mixes from the Dat tape would fit the bill as well.

I tend to lump everything from around that time together to try and get an overall picture, it was obviously a very difficult time for the band. Grandfather may have had something like an official release but it's not easy to find. I would love to be able to upgrade some of the material from this period. I think it's absolutely fascinating and a deluxe WLL is really necessary. Will I ever hear Medieval Owl (ha)??!!

What's this about the DAT tape mixes? Not heard of this before...

It was Will that shared Barry Crusoe and Soul I'm sure. The Barry Crusoe tape was excellent but the Little Soul one less so in my opinion.

Still a bit new to this. What do I have to do to wring this out of you?  I have nothing to trade, but this song means a shitload to me. I'd love to hear a more stripped down version of it, which I imagine this is?

If you fancy digging even deeper in this period then you'll probably have to include live shows. In this respect I'm definitely thinking about the A Touch of Glass show at the 2000 Meltdown and the Quiet Revolution show from 1999. Both of these are fascinating glimpses at the creative processes of Jarvis and, by extension, Pulp as bits an pieces get changed, reused and repurposed in the TIH and WLL gap cf. Otley into The Trees. Lost pieces and songs like Roald Dahl, Cockroach Conversation, My Chopper and Fire Island. I think it's an absolutely fascinating and brilliantly, quietly creative period and I really wish I could hear it all.

Oh and, lest we forget, Duck Diving from the 2001 Peel session

Saw 119, yes, certainly worth digging out those live tapes.
It's a period of Pulp history that I'm not overly familiar with and morever, at the time had no interest in.
But, some years on now and I've started to appreciate this era of material with more love.
But i do think that our Jarv had fallen out a bit with singing.
I think he would have preferred a bunch of nice soundtracks and done his storytelling over the top.

We Love Life demos. Personally - the darkest period of my life, for a number of reasons which have been addressed on here in the past. Plenty of mistakes made by me - of which I was and still am remorseful, however at least these got out there. What does sadden me still is the way a few of us, myself included treated "Trixie" when she was going on about "THAT" CDR - which was where My Mistake appeared from.

Cockroach Conversation as far as im aware hasnt been performed.

I was never aware of different mastering on the promos for WLL regarding Bad Cover Version, Trees, Minnie etc. Whats more standing out in these? Hearing the fade out from Weeds rather than blending into Origin Of The Species goes to show that the song was a rather abrupt end and the blend into Origin actually made the song complete. A few songs that id loved to have heard of all the demos.......

Roald Dahl - As far as instrumentals go, this is by far a stand out.
Candy's Sceptre - Even though this turned into Bad Cover Version, it would be amazing to hear this without the harmonies and the Scott Walker production.
Darren - Did this get played at your booklaunch Sturdy? I cant remember anything on this at all.

The recent DAT tapes that have appeared lately is pretty sickening. For many many years I have always been wanting to know what the mix by Ian Broudie sounded like for Lipgloss - and the time I dont look on ebay, someone was selling Cenzo Townshend's personal copy of the DAT! (It was found in a studio in Liverpool, and the person who found it sold it - allegedly)

Barry Crusoe/A Little Soul DATs - these get regular play by me. I adore Barry Crusoe, which is odd as when Randall And Hopkirk was remade, and having it used as the theme - it just did nothing for me. The Swingle Sisters at the time spoilt the song, however tastes differ over time, and my favourite songs have changed dramatically - namely since hearing things performed live that I hadnt before ( I Spy, Born To Cry, Little Girl With Blue Eyes).

Oh how I wish they'd done a deluxe WLL.

 

This thread has led me to wonder why those '99 songs were abandoned after only 3 live outings. Cuckoo and Quiet Revolution are really good songs.

The cover of "On Your Own Again" is pretty poor, I must admit

I agree that "Fire Island" is great and there is every possibility that part of it was reused in one of the WLL-era demos that we have never heard. Hopefully one day we will find out.

I'd expect we will get the unreleased songs at some stage considering that the music industry has been increasingly reliant on back-catalogue reissues with souped-up packaging and content as well as the resurgence in vinyl over the past decade. There's too much money to be made from a captive market of middle aged music fans, usually male, who aren't into cars.

If Pulp's music wasn't "owned" by such a huge music label who have bigger artists' rights to exploit I'm sure we would have seen a We Love Life deluxe by now so we'll just have to be patient.
