...starts tonight in Brighton. Would love to see and hear how it is. I hope someone is kind enough to record full versions of the new songs.

Bloody good gig. Jarvis gave me a fun size Crunchie bar. Can't say fairer than that.

Was brilliant.
***Setlist spoilers below***

Pick of the new songs 'Swanky Mode', (the lyrics at his tragic character-studying with double entendre best),'Must I Evolve' and 'Am I Missing Something'. 'Elvis Has Left The Building' has been written for a film that's coming out later this year.
The guitarist/violinist was great, she really gave some welly to Fat Children and Further Comps.
Encore finished with His'n'Hers, great synth work from Serafina, Jarvis even did the old shtick of asking a few audience members what made them frightened. Panther of this parish wanted to say "Wasps" but we were too far back.
Just at St Pancras now, ugh, do I have to go to work tomorrow? Yes yes yes, must I evolve? Yes yes yes...(you'll geddit eventually).

Greetings One and All

I have been away from this forum for 14 months (other passions taking up my time besides JC and PULP) but, as Eamonn mentions above, I went with him to see 'Jarv' in Brighton tonight and Jarvis was.....

SENSATIONAL!!!!!!

I cannot praise his performance enough. In addition to the high standard of the music, (which we have come to expect from him), he was also on great 'stand-up' form - very relaxed and witty and quirky.

And for all the Jarvis fangirls out there: yes, he looked UTTERLY GORGE - clean-shaven and in an immaculate emerald green shirt. How he manages to look so youthful I am not sure. It makes me wonder what he eats for breakfast...

With his beardless face once again revealed, you could almost believe we were back in the 90s or early 2000s.

WOW. He's back.

Wow indeed! Sounds amazing.

I've managed to get a ticket to tonight at the moth club. Can't wait, especially now I've seen the encore. I'd be tempted to shout "the fairground!"

If anyone else is going to the moth club tonight on their own and fancies meeting up let me know. I went there on Saturday to see a band called Martha (recommended) and it's a great venue - an old working man's club. It is small but quite long, would suggest getting there early and being near the front- I'm sure everyone on here would do that anyway.

Probably closest to reunion Pulp, when Leo Abrahams helped give a fuller sound but it's different too, maybe the most talented set-up he's had. The drummer was strong, some sophisticated drumming patterns at times, the bassist adds some backing vox to the mix that Mackey doesn't, Serafina is very capable obviously - though her harp needed to be louder in the mix to hear it (she alternated between that and keys and also sat-out a couple of the heavier songs like Further Comps); and the guitarist/violinist is seriously talented. The two ladies provided plenty of vocal harmonies/call and response type vocals as well as playing two instruments.

They also did an extra encore cos we were so nice, think it was called Chilled Ibiza.

I agree with Eamonn that this band had real talent but that the harp was not audible enough. Half the time I didn't realise it was being played till half-way through the song. The backing singing was wonderful, even angelic at times.

Overall, I thought the whole thing was 'quality'!

can only really echo the above.

Hearing the new material has given me extremely high hopes for the (potential) new album, although I'm not sure how close on the horizon that'd be, there were 6 new songs (not including the Elvis one for the film - and the last of which was suggested was very new and raw, not that it sounded it), so they'd need a few more, and to my eye the guitarist/violinist looked fairly far gone with a creature of love so at some point in the nearish future recording is (quite rightly) not going to be a priority.

You really got a sense of band forming rather than a solo artist which I think can only be a good thing.

As for the older stuff I thought "Running the World" also worked really well, and can confirm Jarvis looks like he's just popped out from a time machine he entered 20 years ago.

Oh my that was amazing. I must admit I was a bit worried because I didn't like the song that was on that youtube clip from Iceland but it was brilliant last night - didn't even realise it was the same song until half way through!

Nothing more to add that hasn't already been said. Going tonight too. Have heels on this time so I can see a bit more.

Well if he is doing a small warm up tour, the album is probably close to be finished i think, he would not book rehearsals / spend money etc just to test songs for a recording sessions. May at the earliest, but probably more like fall for an album release i think. He'll probably do festivals in the summer too.

Hopefully it is well underway.

On another note did anyone clock what the vinyl was at the merch stall? I only had a second to glance at it before I was dragged off, some sort of soundtrack/covers thing? think the cover design was a series of hand-drawn vinyl labels

EDIT:

Scratch that it was 20 Golden Greats which must have passed me by a couple of years ago

Couple of other observations - I think the genesis of the theme/lyrics for 'Children of the Echo' is in the review he did of that book of John Lennon letters from a couple of years back where he was basically saying not to be tied to the past. Hope this doesn't mean further Pulp reissues are less likely!
One song started with lyrics about his partner saying he doesn't know how to communicate. Reminded me of Jarvis saying that's what his ex-missus used to tell him.
'Must I Evolve' reminded me a little in places of a Libertines song, 'Road To Ruin' I think , kind of crossed with 'MOR' by Blur (which heavily borrowed from Bowie's 'Boys Keep Swinging').
A lot of the lyrical themes on the new songs had an existential flavour so the character-study of the lady in 'Swanky Mode', classic Cocker territory, did stand out. Some real zingers in there and he seemed to be singing a bit more on this than some of the others. The music also augmented the story. I think that might be the jewel in the crown when these all get recorded and released.

Sorry, I don't understand what you mean here, can you clarify?

Ah, right, soz. Did she? That great big pillar in the middle of the room obscured that side of the stage from where we were standing so I didn't notice.

It's easy to get carried away, it's true, and I thought Girls Like It Too/Leftovers/Deep were boss when they were played live prior to their release.
I mean it weren't like hearing Acrylic Afternoons in early '93 but I think the signs bode pretty well.

Elvis sounded b-side/soundtrack-not featured in the film material and Ibiza still a work in progress.
With the weighty themes of a lot of the new songs I was worried they would be too diatribey but they all have substance.

I met up with Maid Marion of this board this evening and she is v much hoping JC will tour the new material in Europe at some point. (I expect he will; I think he enjoys it).

PS: Eamonn, I will never get over your avatar photo. It's perfection.

Reading about all this is amazing, exciting times. Just so gutted that it sold out so quickly, I'm literally on the verge of just driving over to Manchester on the 3rd that night to try and score heavily overpriced tickets for the Deaf Institute.

Was anyone there last night? I found this setlist on Twitter - same as the Brighton one. The general tone on Twitter of people who were there is ecstatic. One said "Lots of interesting moth facts".
