In light of all these brilliant stars dying, can someone put my mind at ease and tell me that the members of Pulp are all okay?! I can't cope with the possibility of any more of my heroes dying for a while.
From what I can tell from Google, Mark's ok. He's just in the middle of a project with some guy called Peter Gigal and there is some event in London in May. Also he's doing something at Tate Britain to celebrate 50 years of the LFMC. I think it's a reissue, or a development of his 2008 "Shoot Shoot Shoot" project. From what I gather from the bottom of the article there is a book out as well.
What about Jarvis's new recordings- wasn't he supposed to be at an awards show for the Pulp film, but instead he did a pre recorded message saying he was writing/recording some new songs so couldn't be there?
I don't think so. I would expect Jarvis or Pulp or maybe even Relaxed Muscle to release something in the next ten years or so. I wouldn't be too surprised if Jarvis did a gig somewhere in some guise before the decade is out. That said, I don't expect anything this year.
Any good Pulp covers bands out there? Maybe it's time to start touting for business again. Make people nostalgic enough about the reunion and we might get a rereunion.

Jarvis will definitely make a new solo album at some point. But Pulp, yeah, seems like it's done for good.
I'm actually beginning to believe that myself. If you have a look at what other people have been doing in the past few years - Blur brought a decent album out, Suede brought two fantastic albums out, the new Lush material is pretty good and now Super Furry Animals have announced a single. I'm sure if they had any other material planned after, er "After You", we would have known about it by now.
Jarvis is doing stuff with Chilly Gonzales, so it's not like he's retired. Jarvis is clearly more of a collaborator and never seemed comfortable as a solo artist. I really hope he starts doing more stuff soon, as there are countless artists I'd love to see him work with. He definitely seems to lack confidence.
I agree that Pulp clearly never planned anything beyond After You. Never say never though! I could see another Pulp comeback in a few years.

There's finally a date for Neil Gaiman's Sky Arts series that Jarvis has done some music for. I agree with calumlynn, he does seem to have plenty to do, just not in the classic making albums way. He's in a position to cherry pick the aspects of the creative process that he likes, which seem to be mainly writing and performing. He's always popping up singing a few songs in someone or other's concert. And he also regularly appears having written a song or tow on someone else's record, or produced it, or written an essay about something. And then there's Wireless Nights too. It's a nice position to be in, when you have sufficient reputation to do what you like and explore things that interest you, like this writing for TV project.
I also agree about his preference for collaboration. In interviews about his solo albums, he suggested that he wasn't so comfortable in that role, that although he had a band that included several long time musical friends, it was still his album and he talked about turning up with more or less complete songs and he didn't seem to like that. One asdect of Russell's book that really struck me was that he didn't hold back about tensions in the band at times. maybe even quite bad tensions, but never in a bitchy way but with the belief that the tensions were essential to getting the best out of all of them. Working solo is probably a lot simpler in many ways, but maybe also less rewarding, though that presumably depends on your personality. Anyway. Jarvis always seems a lot happier working with others. Maybe also having to produce a whole album can seem a bit oppressive as opposed to just writing as it comes to you and then deciding what to do with it. You need a whole album's worth of tracks and maybe some sense that they belong together, then you have to promote it and presumably tour properly and all that nonsense.

Well someone should tell him both his solo records are awesome and the shows were equally great. Maybe that would motivate him.

I rate Further Complications as the third best Pulp-related album after This Is Hardcore and Relaxed Muscle. His solo gig in Amsterdam in 2007 is one of the best gigs I have ever seen.

I was really into FC at the time, but it's one of the Pulp/ish albums I play the least now. It has some great moments, but I found it quite predictable in places, and at times I felt (hard as I tried to shrug it off) that Jarvis was trying a pinch too hard with his lyrics... There were clever and funny turns of phrase, but it was almost as though the whole 'national treasure' thing had gone to his head a bit... That's something I didn't experience with his first solo record, which I think has stood the test of time better. It feels less forced and has a more alluring atmosphere about it. The live shows were great though, and it was exciting hearing the standout tracks from that album played before it was released - especially ISIWD and Hold Still.
Relaxed Muscle is soooo under-rated! A new RM album would be a boon. Saw the one-off guest appearance during a Barbican show a couple of years back and it was jaw-dropping.

Jarvis's FC is amazing quite frankly, is you're into raw garage rock n roll. Throw in Girls Like It Too and you have one of the best (soft) Garage record of the past ten years. I often play it and it never gets old, in fact it gets better as years go by. The first record is a bit closer to the Pulp sound and melodies.
But i can understand Pulp fan not liking it. It's closer to Oasis in sound, less brain and more gut.

Yes, the Barbican show was fantastic and RM are really underrated, I agree. Jarvis as a fox-tailed skeleton with a beard is not an image I will forget.
