Does anybody know what this is?

http://www.barbican.org.uk/music/event-detail.asp?ID=15024

This is the story of a great lost classic album.

Written by the late Lal and Mike Waterson, two folk luminaries and members of the legendary Waterson family, Bright Phoebus was released in 1972 on the Trailer label. It also featured contributions by Martin Carthy, Richard Thompson and Maddy Prior, as well as a host of other friends and relations.

This magical collection of very English song writing is the only album of Lal and Mike's to feature original rather than traditional songs. Bright Phoebus mixes poetic ballads of life, death, love and longing with a surreal world view and humour, with a Sgt Pepper and Bonzo Dog pop-sensibility. It has long been acknowledged as one of the finest achievements of the British folk revival, despite the fact that it has been out of print for many years.

In October 2013, Bright Phoebus Revisited will draw together the remaining members of the Waterson family plus very special guests, in a unique celebration of the life and work of Lal and Mike through their music. The album will be performed live for the very first time along with previously unheard and unreleased songs.

This concert will be accompanied by the publication of the book Teach Me To Be A Summer's Morning, which will feature the paintings, drawings, stained glass designs, poems and lyrics of Lal Waterson

Featuring:
Eliza Carthy
Martin Carthy
Jarvis Cocker
Richard Hawley
Marry Waterson
Norma Waterson
Oliver Knight
John Smith
Kami Thompson

there is some speculation...

Although an update apparently confirms it's false.

Lovely clip, lovely song. I couldn't stop singing it yesterday, after watching this. Thanks for posting the link.

By the way, is that a new ring I see on Jarvis's finger?!

We had this conversation on the night, yes it is a new ring, but not on the important hand! Unless he's trying to hide something! (Which, by brushing his hair away from his eyes all the time, he isn't doing very well!)

A gold ring is probably appropriate for a 50th birthday present

Hawley's has a black stone in. (And now I'm going to stop as I feel a bit stalkery!)

Well judging by the list of headlines at the bottom, looks like a high quality journalistic website!

There's a bit in this week's Graun podcast, starting from about 14:30 in. They talk about how the Waterson's asked Richard to be involved, then asked him if he had any ideas about who could sing Scarecrow and he suggested Jarvis, who got rather excited about the whole thing.

On stage Hawley said that he'd asked if Lal Waterson was on a lot of drugs during writing, Norma had said "Well, she was eating a lot of pickled onions" smile

Fran, that audio clip was brilliant. I love the bit where Marie says she was looking for someone with some "weather in his voice" and Richard suggested Jarvis. Jarvis's voice is much softer than Mike's but it still had just the right worn-down feel to it to deliver the song.

Thanks for posting.
