"When asked by NME what he meant when he told fans at the band's triumphant homecoming show in Sheffield at Christmas "this is it, for now", he replied: "For a while, you know that was a good concert that, it was nice. But those things, you can't keep doing them but Pulp won't be playing this year.""

This was Jarvis speaking at the Big Melt press conference.

Full interview in the NME this week apparently.

yeah, I'd definitely like to see a solo tour sooner than a Pulp one actually.

It was funded by the lottery fund though...

"Commissioned by BBC Storyville and BBC North in Association with the BFI using public funding by the National Lottery through Arts Council England."

Plus it was billed as a premiere.

"This year"  hopefully being the operative phrase.

Still leaves an option for a Bowie-esque 50th birthday concert, that's more a me wanting that than it being near reality.

Btw, speaking to ME about the Sheffield gig he said he was proper nervous and that it was a huge thing for him to go back and play in Sheffield especially as they left it for ages. But that he enjoyed it. :)

Whichever tour supports new music gets my vote.
I was hoping that he would release something - solo, or with Pulp, before his 50th in September. You know how he is about mortality, and "On this day" anniversaries etc. Unlikely at this stage given it's June already and he's working on various other musical things.

Not a massive surprise really but still good to have something definite, even if it does seem somewhat negative. I am really missing new Jarvis music and would love to hear something new. If, as I suspect, they have/will be recording the music for the Big Melt then we'll have new 'old' Pulp tunes from most of the band. There was also a track on the credits credited solely to Jarvis called 'It Stinks'. Most probably it was just an instrumental as I don't remember him singing anything I didn't recognise.

I tweeted a few people asking about the possibility of a Big Melt recording but didn't get any replies :(

The BBC don't fund projects for their Storyville strand and not have them appear on BBC4 at some point in my experience.

Mind you I don't know what PRS logistics would be like for all those copyrighted pieces of music that soundtracked the film. Maybe it is too expensive to record and broadcast?

Just read that it'll be on BBC4 this autumn.

Yeah, the 'premiere' billing gave me some hope.

Re: not playing 'this year' - not really a surprise I guess, but hope his 'musical summer' is productive, one way or another. While I massively prefer Pulp's output, I can imagine new Jarvis material would never really be that far away. As people have said before, many creative people need to keep doing new stuff.

On that basis, expect a new album and tour this winter.  Everytime they say goodbye....

Just thinking, that Sheffield wedding, pulp2014 email address thing, plus this "won't be playing this year" thing, could be leading up to stuff next year.

Here is the article from today's NME.

Sorry, couldn't quite persuade my scanner to get both edges in, but hopefully makes sense.

Speaking of this, it looks like nobody's linked to the Guardian feature the other day. Good read, it is.

Many thanks Fran and weej both very interesting. I actually found the film quite affecting and emotional at times given that quite a few family members worked those jobs and in those conditions.

Blimey, wish you hadn't pointed those out. Think I might have to go and take a bath now!

Soz. Beyond the usual "What does he know about being a northener/working class/the Eurostar sell-out, Alan Bennett wannabe" I particularly (dis)liked the ones who actually brought up references related to Jarvis'/Pulp's music.

The guy with the avatar of Scott Walker saying his dislike of Jarvis stems from him "sucking-up to Scott Walker"... Hmm, having to tell your hero who is about to produce your record that you wrote a song with a lyric slating half of one of his records isn't what I'd consider brown-nosing. And another poster claiming Jarvis being up his own arse for coming onto stage after all the band during a We Love Life tour and thus getting a better reception from the crowd...er, ever hear of stagecraft, tradition and giving the public what they want?!

It's just annoying cos the Guardian is a decent paper and a lot of the commentators are, you'd imagine, fairly well-educated.

Just read this article about the Unite brass band - seems the soundtrack is being re-recorded and not taken from the live performance. I suppose it would be quite tricky to get a decent recording of a whole brass band wandering about.

"The band will later be recording the track with Jarvis for the official release of the documentary."

This is what always happens when you read the comments on the Guardian.

I use mobile view = no comments = perfect.
