Sean Hughes has just started uploading the second series of his brilliant sitcom Sean's Show and the first episode features Pulp miming to Inside Susan from about the 20 minute mark. It's not a long thing but for us saddoes it's well worth seeing. I just loved Sean's Show and this episode went out the very same week I first saw Pulp play live. Russell looks great in the clip by the way.
Broadcast the night of my 9th birthday (though recorded the previous summer according to the Wiki), the same evening that saw San Marino score against England inside 10 seconds and Graham Taylor take charge of England for the last time (they did win 7-1 in fairness).
Lipgloss was "screaming its way through on daytime radio" as Mark Radcliffe put it to the band when they did an Evening Session that week. Actually their performance on The Word would have been around this time - fair play to Channel 4 again. (Incidentially, this doesn't seem to be on youtube which is a pity)
I envy you for being old enough and lucky enough to catch Pulp at this time (Elastica supporting too). On the cusp of the breakthrough...it's always the best time to see an artist live imo.
The Pulp bit I've seen before on youtube but it's good to see the context. Sean Hughes is a bit hit and miss for me but I like the surrealism here and the way the humour is almost totally devoid of innuendo - imagine that nowadays. (Discounting the not very good Michael McIntyre and Lee Evans.)
RIP Sean Hughes. Far too soon. Saw him at a comedy festival just a few months ago at the start of the summer. He died in our local hospital.
His early career was pretty meteoric. Not sure if Pulp had much mentions on Buzzcocks but he must have been a fan to have them on his own show.
I was going to post about this as well. I'm a bit cut up to be honest, when I first encountered Sean back in 92 he quickly became an important influence, he seemed like one of us. Saw him live that same year. He had good taste as he championed all sorts of great music. RIP Sean.
