I'd rather not get bogged down in a discussion re. the pro's and con's of illegal/legal downloading but I for one would always pay for a song from a band that I was actively interested in. As a side not I absolutely hate downloading albums and had a truly horrific time trying to download something that I had paid for from bandcamp yesterday that led to me stomping around the house going 'I'm never going to pay to download another thing ever f'ing again!'.
Anecdote time: I downloaded The Loss Adjustor from iTunes and it automatically downloaded itself to my 11 year old sons iPod as well. That confused me for a while I can tell you.

Cool, but can't everyone still find it for free? Anyhow it probably solves the mystery of the Jonathan Ross Show. On a sort of related note I appear to have fucked up the Bad Cover Version wiki page - although I started out with th best of intentions - and don't know how to fix it. So there's a little job for someone...
...and presumably no physical release. Do physical releases still happen for singles? Sorry, been out of the uk most of the last decade, really not sure.
Excellent. Let's try and encourage everyone to buy it.
And if someone can help me work out how to buy something from itunes (I downloaded the software to try and get the Stones' single from last year - but failed) then that would be appreciated too!

But "due to considerable interest" from 28 January "After You" will be available to fans through iTunes
It doesn't really imply it is a proper bonafide single release. More akin to testing the water to see if anyone would pay for Pulp material. If they wanted a "hit", they shouldn't have given it away in the first place.
As for everyone being able to get it for free, I always find it odd that people pay for any downloads. Even without using torrents and such like, CDs are so cheap these days that it's cheaper to just rip the tracks than to pay for the downloads. I suppose with the likes of Apple and Amazon your music is always available should you lose it, but I can upload most of my stuff onto the amazon cloud, so not sure that even applies. Only time I ever paid for a download was when I accidentally got Firework by Katy Perry on my mobile.... Honest, it was an accident, though no one ever believes me.

I'd pay for the CD or the LP. Only stuff I download are bootlegs and freebies. The rest I tend to stream through spotify.
I hate downloading mainly because the quality is poorer than the rips I make and I hate tracks being arbitarily split. Much rather create my own music files.
I have started to put albums onto single files, as I have a track limit on my cloud storage, so I get 250 LPs rather than 250 tracks.
That said, I'm not paying for After You, I have it already.
Stephen wrote:ArrGee - if we all took that attitude, it'd have very few sales indeed and might make Pulp think again if they were considering more new stuff...?
If they put it out on vinyl, I'll buy it, but I'm not buying a download. And when it is out on the album, I'll probably buy both LP and CD (as I have for the last two Jarvis albums). But I'm not paying for something, I already have so it make a minor dent on the download charts and make Apple more profit. And as for Pulp's plans, I'm sure the sales of a previously free download will make no difference to them. They'll do what they want.
I'll just buy the Fire re-releases instead, even though I have the originals...
The news of this from the Independent quotes "due to popular demand" but I can't see a Pulp tweet about it.
Does anyone know what/where the full statement/press release is just in case more information was given (unlikely if the news reports haven't mentioned anything else)?
I think if it sells well this is very possible! Which means I'm enlisting someone to buy me one of course as the liklihood of it showing up over here is slim (though I am near the big Amoeba hub so it's possible)
Anyone know if this is just UK iTunes or if it'll be available on US as well?

Hmm, I don't like the artwork much! Though it's good to see the brush-version of the logo coming into use, after appearing on the reunion merchandise!
I'll definitely buy the iTunes version, even though I was up early on Christmas morning to download the free version. I want Pulp to know its appreciated!
The people on the apprentice had to flog some work done by that artist on the last series - I remember thinking then how sh** his work was (bad banksy style stuff) and now he has done this which looks like some rubbish 'neu!' rip-off. Disappointed.
But I began to wonder; does it really matter? In the old days when you went to buy a 7" or 12" or even a cd single the artwork would be a big thing but this is really little more than a tiny thumbnail. It's still shit though.
1 - "Copyright: 2013 Rough Trade Records Ltd. under exclusive licence from Pulp" ............. so they are defo signed up to Rough Trade 2 - That logo is what was used on the new tshirts since they were released at Wireless Festival....... so Designers Republic have been dropped. New logo, New image, New song, TV Appearance........
Rough Trade was always likely given that's who's managed them since 1992. They likely have a very flexible arrangement with them - "if you ever fancy putting stuff out, do it through us. There's never any problem" kinda thing. If it was through Warners for example you could be almost certain that a full album was in the works.
Excellent. Let's try and encourage everyone to buy it.
Although we all have the song, lets hope that we all buy a copy. I plan to 'gift' the song to as many friends as I can. I know they'd never pay for it themselves. Any promotion is good.
Yeah, there's not really been any time for promo ahead of the release. I would expect it to get more attention on a wider scale next week after the Ross performance. A video would have been nice.
Aside from the quality, is it different? Longer? Shorter?
I lined them up to be sure, and the lengths are identical. The iTunes version is very slightly shorter, but only because its cuts a half-second of silence from the end.
Quality-wise, there's not much in it. The Christmas MP3 is a little quieter. The iTunes version has a faint hiss during the fade-out, which could be because they re-encoded the original MP3, or because they boosted the volume.
However, the original Christmas file looks on closer inspection as if it was transcoded up to 320kbps from a lower source, as most of the audio information cuts off around the 16000Hz mark. The 256kbps iTunes file has a little more info in it, as it goes up to 20000Hz. So, until we get a CD or vinyl release, the iTunes version is arguably higher quality.

iTunes:
For comparison, this is what an average CD track should look like. This is Like a Friend. Note that even when quiet, the information goes right to the top... so you can see what must be missing in the MP3 and M4A files above!
Edited to correct a typo in the Hz's!

Short answer: I already have it! Slightly longer answer: it was my reward for my night of hell in Sheffield, if I buy this I've got nothing to show for it.
iTunes software. The top of the main store page should have ads about songs, movies, etc. Below that on the right there should be a small section called Quicklinks. Below that is Top Singles. Clicking on Top Singles brings up the full list.
Interesting that the two or three Youtube uploads of the song have been pulled. They had at least 50K views last time I checked a couple of weeks ago. I guess it's a good way to gauge reception and then have them taken down when they feel there's enough interest to put it out there officially.
I wonder if the band are in any way pissed off about the reporting of it as an old song re-recorded. I guess that's our fault, right?!

Ask a simple question, get a superbly detailed answer! Thanks a lot!
115 now. I looked on the promotions bit and clicked on singles and there it was, first in the list. Hard to know if this is general or targetted at my known likes, but as most of the the offerings were from something called Glee, which I've heard is similar to High School Musical, this seems unlikely. Though actually, we only have one iTunes account for the family and my daughter likes High School Musical.

Blimey that iTunes chart messes with your head. I expected it to be a list of the hottest tunes on the Hit Parade but it's full of totally random songs. How is it possible for a brand new track from Pulp to be lower in the charts than New Kids On The Block and only just ahead of the Proclaimers? I don't think I'm going to look at it anymore.
"Everybody Loves Jarvis, would make for a great TV show. You cant say anything bad about Jarvis. You just have to accept that he exists and bop your head and maybe put your handbag/manbag down and have a little dance. I mean, you definitely could never-ever say that the result of him teaming up with James LCD SOUNDSYSTEM Murphy sounds a bit like a Franz Ferdinand album track."

Well they really do come across as bellends don't they?! It's not even a well-written, provocative review, but reads more like someone's had a shit Monday morning and wants to sit and scowl at the world.
An I like FF anyway!
I'm downloading now because the band deserve my money, a superb song!

Franz Ferdinand album tracks are quite brilliant! The Outsiders, Jacqueline, Bite Hard, Lucid Dreams...
