Bloomberg...those purveyors of reliable alternative music scoops ;)
Still, the plot is beginning to thicken again innit?
Right now, I don't see how there can't be a new album. More a matter of when rather than if in my opinion. I suspect it will be released post-festival appearances in September.
but if there was new material (either totally new or unreleased old stuff) why haven't they tried any of it out live?
Maybe they will. Soon. It looks like a new phase. Up until now, there was no mainstream activity, but within a week a single release and a prime time TV appearance.
A whole album of redone unreleased songs? Yes please. The version we have of 'Rattlesnake' is fine, though. How about 'Snow' and 'My First Wife' - and maybe another go at 'We Can Dance Again'?
Not something I'd be particularly interested in. I don't see what's wrong with the versions of most songs we already have. How could a re-recorded Rattlesnake with Jean cook(?) on violin be better or more interesting than the original? Also, Jarvis has shown time and again that he doesn't know the lyrics to his old song through his use of Pulp Wiki for Mother, Brother, Lover so I think the lyrics to Snow are probably lost in the mists of time. I expect the same goes for My First Wife et al and anyway which My First Wife should they re-record; version 1 or 2? I suppose My First Wife 1 has lyrics that are re-used in David's Last Summer, Live On and My Legendary Girlfriend so it rules that one out.

An album of new (old) material would be fairly ace.
I'd hope that most of the "WLL Deluxe" candidate tracks would make the cut, but it'd be interesting if older demos appeared too. Could Srpski Jeb work without a violin? Disco-it-up a little and it might sit nicely alongside After You. And "The Last Song in the World" looks like a good name to end a track listing, regardless of how it sounds.
I'd like to hear a studio recording of "Going Back to Find Her"...

I think of My First Wife as being version 2. Version 1 is "that other song with the same name".
Wouldn't version 1 actually be the original though? So version 2 is that one with the same name! I love 'em both, and I really mean that, but I think I'll always prefer V.1. I'm a real sucker for nostalgia songs.
I meant my response to more 'playful' than 'accusatory' which is how it seems to have turned out. The whole 2 My First Wives has slightly confused me. I mean 2 songs that have absolutely nothing in common but both called the same thing! Why not just have 2 different songs? My First Wife 1 & 2 are also incredibly short lived as well, except for the above mentioned lyrics.
Songs they should revisit : We Can Dance Again, WLL sessions. No more, after that it's a bit too old and don't really fit Pulp 2012 i think. And some songs mentionned above, i mean, many band members weren't even there when they were written
Plus i have mixed feeling about this: a new record filled with old tracks would seem a bit like they didn't manage to write some new cool tunes. After You was a cool surprise, but they should probably separate old tracks on an EP and do an LP with fresh songs.

I'm fine with them rerecording unreleased stuff demoed at the time of WLL for a potential new album. Doing that is just picking up where they left off before the hiatus and totally dignified. Anything earlier than that doesn't sit well with me, especially songs mentioned that are on official releases in some form already.

Jarv did day though that he had been writing songs that could be new Pulp songs. I know that he says a lot of things and that he can't help himself but write songs all the time, but I thought that was an interesting thing for him to say and then backtrack on.
I think it's a bit of a problem if you have to keep teling people 'Oh well, it was an old demo/song that they've just re-recorded'. That kind of statment makes most of the general public just shrug their shoulders and walk way.
Yeah for the fans I guess it won't be a problem if they did an album comprised of reworkings of older songs. I'm not sure it would matter for the general public either though as the reworking of 'After You', for example, has a very contemporary feel and sound. I'd love to have a better quality version of 'Maureen' and 'Sickly Grin' but don't think I'd want them to go changing those songs or anything I'll be interested to hear more either way whether it's new material or harking back to the past. We'll have to wait and see

The band themselves just said "new song". The media refered to it being an old demo & since they blatently got the info from this board then I suppose we only have ourselves to blame for that!
Fuck me! The Bloomberg guy has just replied to my "So are you saying it's a guess?" Tweet. "On Pulp the guy who told me has given accurate tipoffs before, on Stone Roses, Guns N Roses, Suede and more...".
Replied with "We'll let's hope he adds Pulp to that list." And got this direct message:
"If not sorry to have raised hopes. I don't like to be proved wrong by giving false tips either so come on Jarvis, we love ya!"
