Mark Beech, 'Bloomberg's Rock Critic'.

https://twitter.com/Mark_Beech/status/293515823832772609

'Prince, Suede and Pulp comeback albums this year? Just spoken to a contact who is 100% sure of all three. Bowie watch out, you are not alone'

The former two have been sort of announced (Suede formally, Prince posted cryptic messages on website)......the plot thickens.

P.S Thought I'd make this a new thread, originally came from the Jonathan Ross thread!

This is the best news since 2011 if it's true. I'd imagine it's pretty hard to record an album totally in secret (although Bowie managed it) so it would make sense for some people to find out.

Well it'd make sense really! A lot of stuff over the last two years has been a surprise, we know they've been recording, they had two decent size breaks from touring too! Between Sept 2011 and March 2012, and July and November this year, who knows when After You was recorded?!

For the 1st time since the reunion, the idea that they may already have a new album in the bag makes complete sense to me. They did have a lot if down time last year, shrouded in an exciting cloak of live shows to distract our attention.

Will it be new new material or like After You, properly recorded existing songs, a WLL deluxe deluxe? Jarvis said months ago he had new songs that could be Pulp songs - depending on if the collective Pulp will were there.

I suppose anything not previously released is fair game for a new album.   Most likely it will be a bit of both.  Wasn't Something Changed an old song in its day?

Gonna be quite the year for me: a new Nick Cave, a new Bowie, a new Richard Ashcroft, a new Pulp and heck even the new Stereophonics record sounds promising.

Stereophonics, ha, a good band gone, long gone. I didn't even know they were still making records until someone posted their new single on Facebook.

What's funny is that their new drummer looks exactly like their old drummer, that they sacked and that ended up being dead.

speaking of possible new albums could anyone be more underwhelmed at the prospect of a new Stone Roses album? (cannot believe they are qualified to be top bill even ahead of Blur at an American festival to be quite honest)

I'm still mad Mani left Primal Scream to do this reunion. Sadly I would probably pay to see the Stone Roses just to see Mani as I love him a lot he's one of my favorite bassists. The Stone Roses reunion feels unnecessary in itself (they're sound has such a specific and lone gone time feeling to it) but maybe I just feel that way because I'm very neutral about them in general.

I'll still be holding my breath for a Pulp album though...

I haven't enjoyed their albums since You Gotta Go There To Come Back in 2003, but the new one sounds promising. Not the single, but the other two songs they've released sound quite dark.

1. 'they're sound has such a specific and lone gone time feeling to it' This statement makes me feel very old.

Can I clarify that I'm not ATTRACTED to Mani I just really like him!! Also yes I can't think of many bassists I don't like (except Alex James comes to mind but he's actually a really good bassist I just think he's a moron)

Not to make you feel older but I had another year to be born when the Stone Roses released their first album.

And to make you both feel older, I had another year to be born when Second Coming, their second album was released.

Right now, I don't see how there can't be a new album.   More a matter of when rather than if in my opinion.  I suspect it will be released post-festival appearances in September.

Maybe they will.  Soon.  It looks like a new phase.  Up until now, there was no mainstream activity, but within a week a single release and a prime time TV appearance.

Not something I'd be particularly interested in. I don't see what's wrong with the versions of most songs we already have. How could a re-recorded Rattlesnake with Jean cook(?) on violin be better or more interesting than the original? Also, Jarvis has shown time and again that he doesn't know the lyrics to his old song through his use of Pulp Wiki for Mother, Brother, Lover so I think the lyrics to Snow are probably lost in the mists of time. I expect the same goes for My First Wife et al and anyway which My First Wife should they re-record; version 1 or 2? I suppose My First Wife 1 has lyrics that are re-used in David's Last Summer, Live On and My Legendary Girlfriend so it rules that one out.

An album of new (old) material would be fairly ace.

I'd hope that most of the "WLL Deluxe" candidate tracks would make the cut, but it'd be interesting if older demos appeared too. Could Srpski Jeb work without a violin? Disco-it-up a little and it might sit nicely alongside After You. And "The Last Song in the World" looks like a good name to end a track listing, regardless of how it sounds.

I'd like to hear a studio recording of "Going Back to Find Her"...

I think of My First Wife as being version 2. Version 1 is "that other song with the same name".

Wouldn't version 1 actually be the original though? So version 2 is that one with the same name! I love 'em both, and I really mean that, but I think I'll always prefer V.1. I'm a real sucker for nostalgia songs.

I meant my response to more 'playful' than 'accusatory' which is how it seems to have turned out. The whole 2 My First Wives has slightly confused me. I mean 2 songs that have absolutely nothing in common but both called the same thing! Why not just have 2 different songs? My First Wife 1 & 2 are also incredibly short lived as well, except for the above mentioned lyrics.

Songs they should revisit : We Can Dance Again, WLL sessions. No more, after that it's a bit too old and don't really fit Pulp 2012 i think. And some songs mentionned above, i mean, many band members weren't even there when they were written

Plus i have mixed feeling about this: a new record filled with old tracks would seem a bit like they didn't manage to write some new cool tunes. After You was a cool surprise, but they should probably separate old tracks on an EP and do an LP with fresh songs.

There's a girl on Twitter who said "Ok so Pulp.... Decent song, dodgy singing, dad dancing... Just the same as the first time round."

I asked "Do you remember the first time?"

And she said "'fraid so"

I got a feeling she didn't even get the song reference :)

I'm fine with them rerecording unreleased stuff demoed at the time of WLL for a potential new album. Doing that is just picking up where they left off before the hiatus and totally dignified. Anything earlier than that doesn't sit well with me, especially songs mentioned that are on official releases in some form already.

Jarv did day though that he had been writing songs that could be new Pulp songs. I know that he says a lot of things and that he can't help himself but write songs all the time, but I thought that was an interesting thing for him to say and then backtrack on.

I think it's a bit of a problem if you have to keep teling people 'Oh well, it was an old demo/song that they've just re-recorded'. That kind of statment makes most of the general public just shrug their shoulders and walk way.

Yeah for the fans I guess it won't be a problem if they did an album comprised of reworkings of older songs. I'm not sure it would matter for the general public either though as the reworking of 'After You', for example, has a very contemporary feel and sound. I'd love to have a better quality version of 'Maureen' and 'Sickly Grin' but don't think I'd want them to go changing those songs or anything I'll be interested to hear more either way whether it's new material or harking back to the past. We'll have to wait and see

The band themselves just said "new song". The media refered to it being an old demo & since they blatently got the info from this board then I suppose we only have ourselves to blame for that!

Fuck me! The Bloomberg guy has just replied to my "So are you saying it's a guess?" Tweet. "On Pulp the guy who told me has given accurate tipoffs before, on Stone Roses, Guns N Roses, Suede and more...".

Replied with "We'll let's hope he adds Pulp to that list." And got this direct message:

"If not sorry to have raised hopes. I don't like to be proved wrong by giving false tips either so come on Jarvis, we love ya!"

So if they have new material, and a new album on the way as many do, then why not a 'new' new song rather than an 'old' new song as the first release?

Maybe they didn't intend on releasing After You? It was Jarv's idea to give it out as a present to us lot at Sheffield, the idea to release it might have come later.

coz that way there's on more step for promotion : comeback, gigs, farewell, new comeback, "farewell" gig, surprise xmas present, "new" single of an old song to test the water... then the second big step : new album announcement, new single, new album, new tour.

It's all planned from the beginning.

I think that we can all draw up our own conclusions on this one - After You was never intended to be released from day one.........remember trixie sent it to us on here, so aside from that - no one would have known of its existence.

Performing a song live on tv where it was emphasized that "its their first performance live on tv in 10 years" or whatever....... cannot just be a one off. No dates in the diary etc......oh yeah I forgot were on Jonathan Ross.......

Whatever

I imagine, if they are working on further material, that Pulp will have only told those who have to know what they're doing and in turn told them to keep as mum as possible about it, "music exec" or otherwise. The band clearly prefer to keep things under wraps for as long as possible.

I must say, a reworked album of unreleased stuff is not a bad guess/suggestion. I think Jarvis was pleasantly surprised at the unreleased material when he was compiling the deluxe editions a few years ago.
When asked about new material they've moaned about how long it takes for them to write...they clearly still rate some of the old stuff as the interesting setlists in 2012 showed.

Maureen/Going Back To Find Her/My First Wife/My Second Wife would all hold-up to new recordings, maybe more 80's stuff too that we've never heard.
Add on the best of the 1999-2000 demos... it would be great.

But they would inevitably be asked during interviews why no "new new" stuff, why old songs, and in the end, that would tarnish their comeback i think. a couple of old songs would be ok, but a whole album with "old new" stuff, is a bad idea. And all of those songs are so different the record would sound weird.

I'd much prefer brand new stuff. I quite admire the fact that until now with After You (and I guess when Babies was re-released) Pulp have never recycled old material, always starting with a new slate. But if it's old stuff redone or nothing I'd definitely take it.

Wasn't Something Changed a recycled song?  I agree with the point that Pulp have tended to create anew, but sometimes there are gaps between starting recordings. Common People and Help The Aged were made long before their  respective albums, and there was a lot of We Love Life that had been aired a long time in advance.  Arguably, After You continues this trend

See I've been thinking all along. They were gonna call the next album the quiet revolution according to mother, brother, lover. They could make that album, that tracklist. The Quiet Revolution.

At the very least a deluxe We Love Life is a bit closer now, surely.

Hurry up and get to 1000 sigs on the Pulpwiki petition and let's get it off to Universal telling them that Pulp have effectively promoted such a project with the release of After You.

I'd prefer a WLL deluxe to a 'new' album of redone old stuff. Also, who'd play violin on Heart Trouble? Surely, they'd never revisit unreleased songs from the '80's they don't even seem to enjoy revisiting released songs from the '80's!

I do think the suggestion of them revisiting songs that half of them don't feature on - and that the other half have probably forgotten - from the 80s is pretty fanciful.

The idea of 'finishing off' WLL must be rather more compelling, though...

Didn't they rehearse all of their old songs since the reunion though? I remember reading somewhere that they rehearsed over 100 songs. Maybe some of them would work better recorded rather than live.

My Lighthouse/Dogs/Back To LA/Little Girl/DYWMA/Countdown/an, er, snippet of Master of the Universe were all played in 2012 so I think all bets are off at this stage.

Had managed to erase from my memory the fact that Don't You Want Me Anymore was played.

Grr.

For 'good' songs (as opposed to novelty ones) it's only that and His 'n' Hers that I missed hearing on the reunion tour. Not bad going. But still quite frustrating!

What about all the Hardcore stuff (Fear/Dishes/Help/Soul) or is it too non-Senior for you?

Ah forgot DYWMA, too sad they never played it in the UK last year. They also rehearsed Love Is Blind by the way!

Mr. Eamonn,

Not a fan of either A Little Soul or Dishes, and I heard Help the Aged enough times first time 'round!

Plus, I did get to a gig where The Fear was played on the reunion tour, but have fond memories of it first time round, too.

I missed out on 'Dogs' and 'Little Girl' too, but I think that those - as with My Lighthouse - it was always more of an "Oh my god, I can't believe they're playing this!" then a genuine "Wow. I love this song. I can't believe it's being played" as it was for, say, Sheffield: Sex City or Countdown or something...

I totally didn't expect O.U. at Brixton, but then the riff from Russell's violin slowly grew and grew and realisation dawned that yes, they really were about to play it.

Out of interest, did anyone who attended Brixton actually prefer any other dates on the reunion tour? I only ask because were head and shoulders above any other gigs I've ever seen by anyone, but was just wondering what the Pulp fan demographic thought!

Thinking about it, I left the Motorpoint with much more a sense of 'wow' than Brixton thought that's due to the slightly emotional ending. But that's not to say Brixton was my best concert of my life up until then.

No, but the Albert Hall was very good, and in terms of the setting and the atmosphere was better at points.  Looking back, wireless was the least interesting, but because it was the first announced it was the one I had the most excitement about.  Only did the London dates, so can't really comment on the others.

For me personally - Wireless was quite exciting, as I had not been to Hyde Park before, and it was the first time I would get to hear more or less all of Different Class live. There was an element of dissapointment with no encore, and very little in the way of His n Hers / WLL. The morning after came the announcement of Brixton !!! Slept in a nice hotel too!

Brixton night one... seen the intro before, still sends shivers down my spine - especially when you are literally crushed at the front with PQ and her mates....to hear Countdown, OU, Wickerman, Bad Cover Version, Have You Seen Her Lately, Razzmatazz, Lipgloss alongside other songs that had been played prior - this to me was the far superior gig as it was indoors, intimate, and sounded fucking amazing where as Hyde Park the audio was in and out all the time. To top it off I slept in a converted warehouse that had mini flats inside, and it was in a very run down state - bit like a squat, however it was fun !

Sheffield - a weird feeling about this one, "the last" pulp gig - once again met up with PQ, her fella who is a top bloke, Richard, Tegan, two other lasses cant remember their names but they were able to out drink me haha. The notices on the walls "this concert is recorded etc"......the christmas cards..... and for this gig I was in the upper balcony seats - however not once was I ever parked on my ass ! For me, the setlist was a little bit dissapointing - a huge void of His n Hers material again - but with it being a homecoming, I suppose it was apt for it to be Different Class orientated. Am I odd for actually not being a huge fan of Different Class? A little Soul, My Lighthouse, Little Girl were all HUGE surprises for me, and also Born To Cry - Sheffield Sex City was predictable, and what a stormer of a song that turned out to be.

Out of the 3 gigs, Brixton was the most exciting. Wireless was overwhelming as it was "the comeback", and Sheffield was as if "it hadnt finished yet"......didnt seem final.

Don't worry Dixie I'm not that much of a fan of DC either. I don't dislike it but I could happily live without it!

No.  I prefer His 'n' Hers, Hardcore and Intro (even if it's not a proper album).  It's not that I dislike Different Class, I think it is a great album, but the others matter far more to me.  I like it more than We Love Life and Spearations, but not by that much.

The Brixton gig was incredible as a fan, but RAH was a really good event and although the set wasn't quite as good, I think it was probably better for those who aren't so obsessive.  My first (and only ) wife said it was the best gig she'd ever seen, and from what I overheard from people leaving there was more avid discussion of the gig than the Brixton one.  A lot of people went for the cause as much as the band and from what I heard they were very impressed.

The Brixton dates were definitely the best from the reunion so far - I think mainly due to the set lists and relative intimacy compared to the big festival shows. Down the front of the academy it feels like a small gig.

Primavera was very special because it was the first of the reunion. Wireless/Reading weren't great mainly due to short festival sets and the crowds. RAH was good but was quite used to their set list by then. Motorpoint was brilliant but flawed - somehow managed to play a huge set but picking the wrong songs.

I subscribe to a theory that enjoyment of a song/album follows the formula:

enjoyment = innate quality / exposure

where innate quality is obviously in the eye of the beholder. So if I hear Disco 2000 come on the radio, my heart sinks a little, then I remember that I do really like the song, just maybe not quite enough for the amount of times I've heard it. Conversely hearing more of a rarity is more of a novelty and may produce a more positive response than it might really merit - maybe it was a rarity for a reason! But if you also add in any personal significance something might have for you, that would skew the result, so maybe we need:

enjoyment = (innate quality x personal significance^2) / exposure

Obviously I love all the songs from Different Class I reckon it's more a feeling of wanting to hear some different songs live as DC has been played live a lot. I suppose though, is they did drop some different class for something else then we'd pick fault elsewhere. Glastonbury was my favourite for shere excitement & atmosphere. Brixton in terms of what they played & how well they played it. The bar was set high with Brixton but Albert Hall & Sheffield follow very closely behind.

Other shows that looked amazing from where I was sitting were LA & radio city music hall - that's an almost perfect setting for Pulp with its grand stage & sweeping curtains.

Well, I'm beginning to doubt it again now.

It was all looking so promising, but this silence isn't good. You'd think an album announcement would come off the back of After You, but it already feels as though too much time has passed.

Seems like Wossy may have just asked 'em to do it 'cos he likes 'em and now they've all gone back to their day jobs. If they were recording at the moment and speculation was rife that a new album would be coming out I'm sure that Jarvis would have been papped, or just iPhoned, entering a recording studio by now.

True, (and Wossy is clearly a fan) but it would be a slightly weird way to leave things (less weird than the cruise but then what isn't?).

It's like their initial nervousness/wariness in 2010 for playing live quickly dissipated with the success of 2011's live shows while last year's pick and mix gigs at new places and shows like Mexico/South America/Sheff clearly left them thrilled. Next step, try something out in the recording studio. Well-received, next step - perform said new recording live on prime tv.

I've not been optimistic at all over the past couple of years about new material but After You makes it so much more likely now than 18 months of on-off touring did. It's still a long-shot but I'm more optimistic of at least We Love Life unreleased stuff coming out in the foreseeable future.

I'm the only one who thinks the cruise wasn't a weird thing aren't I? Oh dear. I just think the sailing off into the sunset thing was quite apt! (I'm not saying that there being a festival on a cruise isn't weird.) but then they come back and do more things and then leave us hanging again! I can't cope!

Bowie got away with recording in private for two years, I think Pulp can manage it! My favourite quote was from Tony Visconti (Bowie producer), who said he listened to songs from his latest album just walking around New York. What if there was somebody walking around RIGHT NOW listening to a new Pulp album?!

I personally think that After You was an experiment, if it worked they'd go ahead and do an album, as it turns out it didn't set the world alight, so I'm not sure they will be doing anything new!

I don't think they're that influenced by the fickle nature of modern commercial musical trends which are dictated to teenagers and fans of karaoke tv. The singles charts are an abomination these days - bands, new or established, barely get a look-in anymore.

The track got great reviews, decent airplay on digital and alternative radio and a smattering across the main channels. All for an old song re-done. Can't imagine how anyone would be gutted at that.

Surely Jarvis has fingers in so many pies these days - producing Serafina Steer, all the various spoekn word bits and bobs that appear, kids' stories and what have you, vocals for the likes of Discodeine and Erol Alkan ... - that merely being seen near a recording studio need not have any great significance and set off any media frenzies? Or am I being too logical, the media don't need a reason for a frenzy after all.
