Contacting him rather later than he'd said I should, Nick Banks has now agreed to reply to a questionnaire. But what should be the questions?

As in the case with my Russell interview, it's (partly) over to you.

He's also "glad I like" After You.

Hi Stephen, i have a question for our Nick, well its kind of a menage et trois. Are there any songs down the years you  particularly always enjoyed playing? Also, are there any that you dont enjoy playing and lastly any songs that you would like to play? happy new year and regards.

What was it like being back in the studio after 10 years again? And what lead to the decision to properly record After You?

Does he know that during the last chorus of 'Disco 2000' in Sheffield, he was hitting his bass drum so hard I thought I was going to collapse?!

He very kindly did the same for me years ago. I have since lost the email but it was a good read. From what I can remember:

He said that if he was "in charge" of Pulp, all songs would be 3:30 in length
He would provide vocals if he got the chance because he likes singing hymns at church
He also talked about the writing and recording process but I can't really remember much of what he said

I can't think of any questions this time but if I do I'll let you know. Hope it goes well and he's certainly a sound guy

What other songs did he have a hand in writing a la Babies? And how does it feel to have been responsible for one of their greatest tunes. What is his opinion of Magnus's drumming?

A bit boring, but of all the locations Pulp played over the last 18 months, which one was his favourite (aside from Sheffield of course). and is there anywhere he would still like to play? Has his relationship with the other members of the band changed since the reunion?

Uhn, this is a bit complicated... Well, I will make a question with a comment!

I was on the only gig that you made in Brazil, a lot of fans waited in front of Via Funchal since 4 p.m. to watch you closest as possible (And I was there too, waiting in the row!). And you create a kind of atmosphere between the people that are there to watch you, we were talking about the expectations, creating new friends and it became an fantastic experience.!

That's ok!

> The question: Which had been your impressions about the concert in Brazil?
> "After You" create a new space for Pulp fans, and people that doesn't know your work started listening this new track too. That new instant success with "After You" can bring Pulp back with a new tour or an other new song?

Does he think the Jarvis solo songs could have been Pulp songs if the band still had been together around that time.

Here's mine: If Pulp were starting out in 2013, what kind of music would you be making?

this is cool.

If I could ask Nick Banks something I'd probably go with, If he could describe the very first rehearsal with all the members before saying Yay or Nay to the comeback shows - I would have loved to have been a fly on the wall. I imagine alot of laughter and screwing up of faces.

Cant wait to read his responses to the chosen questions!

When it came to getting autographs, Nick was generally the most accommodating though none of the others seemed to have a problem. Apparently, Jarvis' face was a picture when he got asked to sign my "Master of the Universe" 12"...

Oh and Candida was more than happy to sign some flyers outside of Auto; "Taxi for Doyle!"

They were, but unfortunately the email was lost years ago. I also have a vague recollection of him mentioning that he liked a lot of "Separations"-era Pulp.

What was the feeling like on stage when you played La Bikini the first night of the reunion?
Did the making of After You give the impression that you were comfortable with making more songs?

It's great that Nick is so accommodating. He gave a lot of material for Mark's book; some really good anecdotes and comments.

Are none of the others as forthcoming (Russell has been, with Stephen and Mark at various points, I guess)? Steve and Jarvis I can see being removed from this type of thing, understandably I guess in Jarvis' case given the regular media requests he gets for interviews. What about Webbo and Candida? Mark did speak with Mark just before the comeback started, maybe he'd be open to this now that he has "come to terms with Pulp" :)

Eamonn,

Maybe they would be more forthcoming, but it's a matter of how to contact them. Russell (when dealing with his musical) was accessible. And I just took a gamble on Nick being able to pick up email for Banks' Pottery!

I know Candida is (was?) on Facebook, but that feels a little like disturbing someone's privacy...

Thanks for asking for questions. I have two...

1) Do Pulp have any plans to release / encourage the label to put out a deluxe edition of We Love Life given how much the other editions, with all their unreleased tracks, were appreciated by fans?

2) Are there are plans to reissue the latter albums on vinyl? Ebay prices are crazy.

Not a question for Nick, but

You guys should really check discogs if you're interested in Pulp vinyl. A lot of it is still expensive but it's SO much cheaper than on Ebay or Amazon and there's generally a better selection. (I feel like I never shut up about discogs but seriously it's a much better deal than Ebay) Plus you can add albums to your wantlist and get e-mails when new ones go for sale so if a cheap one comes up you can get it right away. Also no bidding system (though you can bargain with the seller) so no obnoxious last minute bidders stealing your original pressing of Separations that you've been bidding on for a week straight in the last 30 seconds of an auction (I'm not bitter)

Can you please ask him what the band were thinking when they completely discarded It's A Dirty World during the TIH sessions? Or if he has any memories from the writing/recording of that song?

Sturdy never got to ask him about it for Truth And Beauty and it seems to be acknowledged on here generally, and by Jarvis, that it should have been on the album, never mind a b-side.

I did ask him about it actually. Mentioned the title to him and he didn't remember it at all.

Sorry Mark! Actually, I think you said on here before that may have been because he might have remembered it under the title "She Said She Was A Dancer" rather than "Dirty World" which is the only title that was available at the time you interviewed him (presumably taken from the demos page on the old official site).

Could have replaced That Boy's Evil?(!) Everyone has their own tastes etc. but I'm puzzled how any Pulp fan could not be impressed by IADW. It always goes down really well with casual Pulp fans when I play it to them too.  In his critique book on Pulp, Uncommon, Owen Hatherley describes it very well. From memory, something like "given the full Chris Thomas guignol treatment, it's so much more likely than the fudges on the record". I think in his reshuffling of the TIH tracklist he replaces a song about a damaged girl that did make the final cut, Sylvia, with Dirty World.

And Jarvis: "The biggest surprise that I got [compiling the reissues] was a track that was on the bonus disc of This Is Hardcore, which I think was the only studio outtake we've ever had, which was a song that we just abandoned called "It's a Dirty World". And when I listened to that, I realized that I must have been pretty fucked up at that time, because it's better than about six songs that actually ended up on This Is Hardcore. So that was the biggest surprise, really. I thought it was a really good song."

I'd go a step further and say after the title track it's the strongest song from that era.

Anyway, Stephen, regardless of the song's merits which seem more debatable than I thought, it would be interesting to see if Nick's memory of the song has been jogged since its' eventual release. The fact that it's the only fully recorded Pulp song (with bells on) never to be originally released gives it curio status at least so I'd like to hear anything he has to say about it. Thanks.

Aside from the obvious questions which he probably isn't allowed to answer, I'd like to know which songs made him want to join Pulp.

Thought your rap leanings would dig the "Everybody in the house say Woah's". Street Operator is so bland in comparison.

I'm not a huge fan of Dirty World either, its nice to have it released but I wouldn't want it to replace anything on TIH. It could have replaced That Boy's Evil though.

Street Op has grown on me over time. Still think it one of the weaker ones from that period though. And I like Born To Cry too.

For some people, I guess it's a bit too nice and normal and closer to a Jarvis/Hawley singer/songcowrite than Pulp.

I've always wondered if it surprised them how varied their fan base is e.g the fact that teenagers today are still passionate about their music and the massive fan base they have in places like south america.
