hehe. well isn't that a treat ! we were a few hoping for re-recording of that song and others from that time (It's clearly a NEW recording) and here it is.
After one listen, it sounds a bit rushed production wise, but i'm sure it'll pass and i'll end up loving it from start to end. First new Pulp material in 11 years, can't complain ! Now here's hoping they also revisited Cuckoo and other songs, along with some new ones maybe ?! I'm pretty confident now there's more to come. they cant do that and leave us now, can they ?
Thanx Jazza and Weed for the upload. much appreciated.
Could anyone do a screenshot of the site as well if that's not asking too much ?

I'm feeling a bit gormless, maybe it's because I have to confront the Christmas kitchen any moment, but I'm not sure what you're after, the whole page(? - not sure why you'd want that, but if it makes people happy ...) or just the Christmas card artwork that comes with it - take your pick:

Someone help me out ! Tried to access through the links that you've put up but I must be doing something wrong ....I'm sadly not very technical : ( . I've tried the obvious, but it's just not happening for me and I've left my Xmas card at home and can't wait to hear it !

Thanx ! well i just wanted that to see how it looked like if that was a new site or just a download page...
Sounds like 2012 Jarvis, especially hearing it along with the other demo version of After You! Interesting stuff, out of all the possibilities I didn't think they'd be re-recording old stuff! Or possibly new stuff, I mean seeing as it was never released before it could go on a new album I guess. If we were to have new recorded material, the production will clearly be a lot better; there are lots of different sounds on this, all very clear and highly defined! Excellent stuff!
EDIT: My one and only criticism is that it's a bit too long for a song like AY. It's not like TIH or Wickerman, it's a pop song really. Maybe a minute too long, the original was about that (just checked, 4:15)! Very minor criticism though!

maybe yeah, could be a teaser for a new album, with a new version being on the record. It does sound like an full demo rather than an a finished track. especially the instrumentation.
Looking forward to hearing this, though I'm tempted right now to avoid post-Separations Pulp until I 'get to it'. Do people reckon there's any chance that it's an old demo? There must be a couple of versions of it in the vauts.
Thank you to Lauren for coming to my rescue ! I'm Technologically inept at best. Merry Xmas .....and mine might be now I can stop stressing about this !
Well, if all Pulp want to do in the studio is rehash stuff that didn't make it first time 'round, then on this evidence (with sweaty palms and armhair raised) I'm all for it. F'ing hell, that's one dirty classic and, other than Wickerman and Modern Marriage, I've not been that bowled over on 1st listen to a Pulp song since hearing Hardcore (the song). More please. And I'll even pay for it!
Thanks for posting up the link. Song would not be out of place on the Intro Compilation/Gift Recording Days which is a great thing. Heres to more new/reworked songs of lost classics hopefully.
I think the new track (OK re-recroded old demo!) is of really good quality.
What is particularly impressive is how much it varies to earlier Pulp albums. That has always being one of my biggest attractions to the band - unlike a lot of big bands such as Arctic Monkeys they really do manage to produce completely different sounds with each album.
Maybe if they see it's had such a positive reaction, it'll make similar releases - demos, re-recordings, anything - more likely.
Even if this is all it is, it's still good. Cheered me up as I've had to work over Christmas! I'd convinced myself it was a teaser trailer for the DVD.
For anyone without a postcard: http://www.mediafire.com/?j1d9z4suw75z3te
I haven't heard it yet (saving it for Christmas day) but from what you all say it sounds like it's amazing - Hopefully there will be more to come but I think the 'download all tracks' is for other artists using the same program who upload several tracks
Merry Christmas!

I honestly can't believe anyone thinks it's just a remix of the old demo. The vocals are completely different to me and the rhythm/pacing on the vocals is different. Finally got to listen to it just now and I really love it, but I always loved the demo.

I was wondering if they maybe thought they'd have a go at it but that's the only song they finshed before deciding to call it a day. They then decided it was too good to languish in the vaults so they've given it away.

Plus the backing track is completely different too. That oriental sound is stronger on this with that extra guitar riff not coming in until the second verse whereas they blended throughout the original demo.
So amazing to hear this on Christmas morning! I'd never heard the demo, so this to me, is essentially a new track!
Agree with what everyone says about it being a new recording, Jarvis' vocals don't sound like they did post-Hardcore, pre-WLL. BUT, don't want to be quick to jump to conclusions. There's every chance that this was the result of the band dipping their collective toe into the studio (on the sly, of course) to see how things were.

im sure Jarvis going through notes of his, to put the book together also helped.
According to Q magazine it was 'recently recorded' with LCD Soundsystem's James Murphy. He's also working with Arcade Fire on their new album!
fantastic! Listening to it knowing that, it definitely makes sense. Also I can't understand why people think it still sounds rough and self produced demo-like. It sounds awesome. Obviously it doesn't sound pristine and shiny like indie bands in the 90s and early 2000s, but that's a good thing in my opinion. The only old Pulp production that dosen't sound a little dated are the Gift singles, and possibly It, strangely enough.
Also, the Soundcloud stream of the song that all the music websites are posting is my soundcloud account (brilliantmind), that I uploaded it to in order to post on tumblr! Not sure how I feel about that, really didn't think that websites would be reposting etc, I just wanted to show my internet friends. I feel like the song was temporarily 'ours' and I kinda gave it to everyone else, sorry about that.

Shows you how these 'news' sources get stuff. I lost respect for NME when I found a whole lot of my youtube files linked by their 'articles'
Hope this LCD soundsystem connections is true. Love LCD soundsytem, and they're working with Arcade Fire also, so 2013 looks like a good year for music.
Ive just returned from my Dads and being all family orientated and havent had the chance to get on the net for a few days! But yeah soon as I got back to civilzation, hopped onto find this new track!! A wonderful belated Christmas gift!!! yayayayayayya!
Makes you wonder what Pulp were intending by offering the track as a christmas present. Did they want it to be just for people who went ot the show or are we just an unwitting adverstising campaign for their new song? Also, what could possibly follow? Surely they can't remain silent about this can they?

I just heard Nemone on Radio 6 promising to play the track later on her show today - before 1pm! Probably while I'm driving my mum to the station with no digital radio in the car, never mind.

She's played it just before the end of her programme, she sounded pretty happy. Looks like she got it from Calum's soundcloud judging by tweets - I see Calum's been chatting to Steve Lamacq on Twitter. Don't feel bad Calum, there'll be plenty of Pulp fans out there who will be very grateful while conversely, some of those at the Sheffield show clearly didn't appreciate their gifts enough to take them home.

I'm not too thrilled by this song. Too early 90's for me.

I partly agree, in the way that the backing track especially sounds a bit like Separations with modern technology. Sounds like a cheesy dance remix in parts (sorry). I really liked their sound on the tour, more guitary and less dancey, i thought it worked well on Countdown and was expecting new material to sound like that.
It's still a phenomenal song though, but if they do more, they have to go on towards a more "human" instrumentation and less effects. Coz machines tend to overshadow a band's sound and they'll end up sounding like anyone else.
I still feel like it's a rushed production, even if it's lush and inventive in parts, it doesn't quite have that unique sound Pulp had in the past.

Me to Liltman! I was hoping for a 12 days of Xmas, but clearly that's now not the case.
However it may not mean more future stuff. They could be 'testing the water' to see what public opinion is... and I've seen nothing but heaps of praise!

Yeah, it was funny that Lamacq was tweeting my personal soundcloud! but yeah, I am glad that it's meant that more people have heard the song, it's had 24744 plays so far! It's not like with bootlegs, where it's quite nice that only hardcore fans can find them cos they're the only ones who are really going to appreciate them- this is an amazing new pop song that EVERYONE should hear, and everyone can appreciate, even if they're not a Pulp fan!
Am I the only one seeing as a way to gauge opinion on whether to do new material?
But they don't really need to do that do they.
I dunno. Jarvis's solo stuff didn't really sell to well and WLL and Hits both were disappointing. The live shows have been a success but there's been lots of chat about being happy not having to do media to sell stuff etc.
I think they would want to be sure before throwing themselves into it. After You may also be the band making sure they can still do it.
Which is a big fat yes.

Don't forget their supreme lack of confidence as a band _ I read that yet again pretty recently, I think in connection with the Sheffield show and Jarvis talking about how nervous he always is playing there - "We were never a very confident band". When he was wittering on about it being good of us all to turn up and be so nice to them, I thought that was very heartfelt and not just being polite to the audience. If they haven't entirely dismissed making any new material, I wouldn't be at all surprised at them testing the water like this with a free gift. And I don't think anyone would expect it not to leak into the public domain, though it doesn't have to follow that that was the whole intention in the first place, in some Alistair Campbell-like fashion.

I love it. I would take it personally as it was made out to be, a nice gift for fans who got a christmas card at the gig.
Part of me wonders though, for fans of Pulp who didn't know the story behind the song being an old demo re-worked, how did the band expect the song to be taken, in the way that if it weren't for all the news sites explaining the songs origins, perhaps some fans would see the song as 'brand new' material.
If it means a step towards a WLL deluxe, I'll be happy. I'm not holding out for anything else, but I'd kill for a hint of just why they did it, someone needs to conduct a Jarvis interview and question him about it!
I personally love it, really love it, but then again I'm pretty into Separations/Gift stuff in particular. Also loved the appearance of the stylophone. Guess anything put out is never going to be everyone's cup o tea but lovely to see such a positive reaction on Twitter etc. If they were looking for a confidence boost, well, here it is. Understand they may not fancy recording-promoting-touring treadmill, but we could get more unreleased tracks, perhaps, or WLL Deluxe.
I thought I read that Further Complications was the bestselling Cocker-related album since Hardcore.
Hmm, maybe in the US. But We Love Life would have sold close to 50k copies (one week in the top ten, two weeks in the top forty). Further Comps peaked at 19 but for his solo career he's on Rough Trade who have managed him for twenty years and they're an independent label so big-sales is not something that either party would be overly bothered about.
For all the disastrous chart position of Hits it still went on, eventually, to go Gold - 100,000 units. Granted, the majority would have been in heavily discounted HMV sales but then so are a lot of big-selling compilations.
If they were to release a record in the current climate replicating the "failure" of WLL would not be bad going in terms of sales. Content is mostly consumed via torrents, youtube hits and spotify plays now. Once Apple launch a streaming service to rival the others, paying a quid for a download is going to be an alien concept to the 16-25 market - traditionally the ones who buy singles the most. Even now you're seeing established indie/guitar bands peaking at really low chart positions when it comes to singles.
An album could still do moderately well but any money-making will for the foreseeable future be tied-up in gigging all over the world like they've done for most of the last 18 months. And I can't see them, Candida anyway at least, doing all that again.
Re After You, I'm a bit surprised that they've resurrected an old song and re-recorded it. I don't think they've ever done that before. Quite admirable really - a clean slate for every era. I hope if any more comes of this surprise, we at least get all the unheard songs from 1999-2000 out of this.
I also love it, but I got in a Hardcore mood because of it, with itunes coming up with The day after the revolution (using the searchwords "pulp" and "after"), whcih I hadn't heard for years probably. I really loved it, sounded very fresh (I mostly listen to early 90's Pulp) and now I'm thoroughly enjoying the This is hardcore album, including songs I mostly skipped way back when. Now itunes is at Seductive barry, hated that in 98. If someone would have play that for me yesterday, I wouldn't have known it's Pulp (blush). still don't like this song very much by the way.
Went on the site to download my track - didn't have the code with me over Christmas but all I see is a picture and nowhere to enter the code. Anyone else having this problem?

I've just checked after what you said and it does indeed look as though the download is not being offered anymore. Wonder why?
It is rather amazing to watch this all unfold. How quickly did 'the press' get this news (images link from our board, soundcloud links from our board) and where/who confirmed that James Murphay is at all involved? Dont get me wrong, I am very excited by all of this, but it is rather odd to see how social media/the internet (that makes me sound old and outdated) can turn a small spark into a full fire within hours. This story is being picked up by all the web new sources. Some how, I feel like PULP are sitting at home laughing at all of us.
I for one believe there is more to come, (I did mention a xmas surprise in a Nov 24 post to which I am waiting to see the yourtube clip of WEED eating his hat) and that this is a testing of the waters. By removing the link it creates more interest. They want to see how much interest can be made from all this news/noise. I certainly am making lots of noise!
EDIT: Never mind, just read James twitter page. (red faced) It is confirmed he did this track. Still interesting to see the fire burn! Keep the noise going.

Yes. It seems the Pulp link was only open for 24 hours - I posted a query on the Facebook page. Shame they didn't mention it on the card. It seems a few other people with codes also missed out.
Hmm, with it only being available for 24 hrs, it suggests it's more likely - to me - that there is something bigger coming. Conversley, if After You is to be released in some form, why not just make it streamable for those 24 hrs rather than d/l able?

Completely agree Voxpop, couldn't believe it when Metro tweeted about it earlier.
But let's take advantage of social media, people. Retweet, and send messages to key media sources surrounding the song, as this will increase its popularity.
If the band are 'testing the water', then there is more chance of more material... and we will only be giving the song the publicity it deserves anyway!!
Wasn't a chunk of In Rainbows songs that were demoed and played live since 1997? (But I guess Radiohead hadn't been on hiatus for a decade, then reunited while promising not to record anything, then releasing a mysterious song with the only comment being that the song was "not socks"...)
'All I Need' was first recorded in 1997, and they'd played Reckoner live since 2001, loads of others were given their debut on tour in 2006 so I suppose it's whatever song fits their style at the time - they're changing all the time! After You is a completely different concept all together, much more mysterious as you say. Although I'm thinking they couldn't be bothered (or didn't want to) to write new stuff, and instead dug out an unreleased song they thought would be good to do again and did it out of curiosity. I don't think much else will come from it, hope I'm wrong though.

If I were Pulp (and, tragically, I am not) I'd be seriously narked that the consequence of sound page refers to it as a demo!
Well, let's be honest here; we don't actually know what it is! What is the song for, what are the band hoping to achieve? Why do they have to be so bloody quiet about everything! I was moaning to my OH about the silence and she said to me (in the manner of someone fed up with being hassled by a hand wringing Pulp obsessive) 'Maybe there isn't anything to tell'. I hadn't considered that but that can't be true can it?
I mean besides the 'demo' talk (I don't think it's a demo by the way), but the band can't complain really if people say it is a demo as they haven't done anything to inform people about what the song is. I wonder if the band knew that an old demo of the song was circulating in the fan community? If you're going to re-record an old demo people are bound to ask questions about why and what for.

i love it! and what a wonderful idea this all was!
sad that i missed my window of opportunity to enter my code from my sheffield card though :(
christmas eve and day were busy and thanks to this here website i knew ahead of midnight eastern standard time what the pulp goodie was. listened to the song but was looking forward to going home and putting in my own code at a later time.
hope not too many others did this same thing and now the band thinks no one cared!
There are quite a few moaners on the Pulp facebook page to the extent that it even prompted a response from the people who run the page along the lines 'it was only open 24hrs' so I don't think the band think that no one cares. I wonder how many people actually downloaded the track in that one day?
