It struck me that at several points last night that the band were actually recreating the fabled Leadmill gig from '88, only this time they were achieving rather than failing. The gig is well known as being a bit of a shambles but it seems the band went out of their way to put that right last night. For a start they projected films successfully unlike in '88 when the projector broke and they had to have that little telly, they got everybody to drape toilet roll all over the Arena, they huge smoke machines billowing out smoke unlike that little bit of dry ice you see Russell preparing before the gig on the Hits DVD. But most importantly, and this is what clinched it for me, they made it snow at the end of the gig. Something that they tried in '88 but according to reports failed miserably at. Those snow cannons really were something special and I think it was all about that show in '88 which, if I'm remembering correctly was very much viwed as a final gig by the band. All that was missing from the stage were some trees.

You're spot on there! Did you enjoy it despite the lack of Russell? I thought it was absolutely brilliant but I'm still cross now that he didn't even show up for one song

Yeah, I enjoyed it.I actually thought the violinist was very underused during the night. To be honest, I could just listen to Jarvis and look at them, I don't need to hear the songs. I did stand well away from the violinists side of the stage though.

From where I was standing, I could not hear the violin at all. Everything else was really loud though. I think one of the loudest gigs I have ever been to. Towards the end of Disco 2000, the bass drum beat was hitting me so hard in the chest I thought I was going to be sick or pass out! I nearly left for a breather. Thankfully I was fine & stuck it out.

Kind of a brilliant observation, Stephen. I agree that the violin was very low in the house mix (we were standing a few rows back near the center). Of course in my twisted mind I thought it might be in deference to Russell, who I kept thinking might pop out from stage left. Was very disappointed when she closed her violin case after Sheffield: Sex City, had been holding out hope that they might still play O.U. Has the printed setlist popped up yet? Wondering what songs they might have planned to play that they didn't...

I could barely hear Candida at all at the beginning of SSC, was that just an anomaly of my location or was her mike not turned up?

Candida's vocals was a recording, she had no mic!

Yeah it was inaudible from where I was except for Jarvis saying "What's that noise?" which I assumed was a reference to it.

No, that was a reference to a CO2 machine that started leaking and spitting at the front of the stage. It was fun watching Jean and Mark edging away from it and flapping at the stage crew for them to do something.

I couldn't see her clearly enough on Saturday, but I thought in one of the recent Chile concert videos on YouTube, she looked like she was doing it live, which I found really surprising given how shy she is about singing at all, let alone something like the bit off the beginning of Sheffield Sex City. So that would make a lot more sense that it was recorded.

She definitely didn't do it at Brixton.

The vocal track was speeded up a little at Brixton, too!

Same in Sheffield. Thought she sounded a little squeaky.

No way would Candida ever sing live...just can't see it. Maybe in the 80's,youth, fearlessness and all that.

Still can't believe how good S:SC sounded the other night. Just spellbinding.

Eamonn, she does indeed sing live on some of the '84 era live recordings I believe. Now...my memory being what it is, I can't remember whether this is something I've heard myself, or something I've been told by those with larger bootleg collections than mine!

Yeah, I think that might have been mentioned in Sturdy's book. Definitely read it somewhere but like you, can't recall if she's singing on an any of your unearthed recordings.

Presumably, as she does do backing vocals on some of the 'Dogs' recordings, she'd have been likely to have at least tried to recreate that live at some point...

I always presumed it was Candida on There's No Emotion singing backup. Am I right? I never actually bothered to check.
