For someone who's never been to Sheffield before, what's the difference between red and blue? Is it like Cardiff where there's just two different entrances for standing?
I'm Red doors as well and it's just about where you enter the Arena. They couldn't have everybody in standing going through one set of doors.
Surprisingly, they do at the O2
How they ever pass fire safety regs is beyond me then.
Woohoo! Cannot wait cannot wait cannot wait! The thought of Hawley supporting is brilliant, but his reaction also suggests they could be doing an extra long set or something equally different and special!

I forgot to mention because I've been busy, met Hawley last Wednesday and asked about the concert, he just winked and said wait and see, he was really good live by the way.
I predict from that that they will do what they did in 02 and call it a day without ever saying so, with the intention of perhaps reforming again for live shows when the timing and money are right

Brilliant! I've been moping around that none of his 2013 dates are close enough to warrent me traveling by myself so I'd love that. Plus if he's supporting my sister will hear his music for the first time and I can convince her to go to hull with me :)
Well, it's official. My wallet hates me. I managed to suppress the urge to buy tickets right up until 12 days before the gig, and then I just couldn't resist it any longer. Woo-hoo! Only 12 days to go now!

Hush, keep very still, for the strangest things are about to happen.
We started queing at midday for the Brixton gigs and barrier slots would have been filled by about 4pm if that helps. But the arena is a lot bigger and I suppose you won't know which doors will be opening first.
Don't forget the Brixton show was on a weekday so most sensible people were working instead of queuing. I can see people queuing much earlier - this is the homecoming show after all.
Shit, I'm not in Shef until 2 ish and then I can't get into my hotel until 3. Then I have primping myself and food to consider. Christ, was it even worth me getting standing tickets?
I would be there super-early, but I don't think my girlfriend would be too keen on that. I have managed to convince her to stand for the gig (she prefers seated) so I'm not going to push my luck. I'll make sure I am there at a reasonably early time and take my chances.
A Radiohead fan was asking me when she should start queueing and I was like "well...I don't think Pulp fans are quite on the same level as Radiohead fans with that". When I went to see RH we should up at 6 in the morning and there were two people there who'd been there since 6 the night before. Totally insane.

I am arriving in Sheffield at 10 and am heading straight for the arena - hopefully that'll ensure a place at the barrier (do you think?)
I'd be a bit worried about the mental state of someone who was there earlier than 10 in the morning! (says he with 50 thousand posts)
Well then I'm glad I didn't persuade myself to get ealier tickets Still if this really is the last time I get to see them then I don't want to take any chances.
cor, you lot are keen, I got to Brixton and RAH well after doors opened and was pretty much at the front for both shows. I wouldn't like to go too early, as I'd just be really tired for the gig. I admire those who manage to queue for hours though!
Eamonn, the 9am start at RAH was largely dictated by the fact my other half was a couple of months pregnant - hence we wanted to be at the barrier where there was more ability to support her, and also to get out if the going got tough.
Oh yeah, and 'cos we were there so early, we - and rawrsome sauce (who is also mental) - got to chat to Jarvis when he appeared!
The first Brixton day was 'only' a mid-day start, with the second day being an earlier start due to the fact we hadn't been first in the queue on the first day! In the end it all paid off though as I'm sure Russell - if reminded of his constant heckling - will attest to.
Never been tired for a gig doing it this way, either. Brixton was especially easy as there's a non-stop supply of Asian foody treats from just 'round the corner, seats to sit on, and a charity shop across the road in case you've not brought a book.
Sheffield Arena, however, offers merely bowling and Frankie and Benny's.
Maybe you could all construct an Occupy camp in the Arena car park this week, Jarvis is keen on them.
I knew there was a reason I preferred seating, how can you manage to enjoy the event when there's all this anxiety about just getting in? Each to his own. I just freak out squashed in crowds, I went to a sci-fi convention in London the other week and that was right on the edge for me, just crowds milling round stalls of cuddly Pokemons. If I get too wound up I just end up with the whole event passing me by before I've pulled myself together to pay attention.
I hope it all goes for you as you're hoping. Doesn't sound conducive to meeting up in the pub beforehand, then?

I just think that there's so much going on at a Pulp gig that to not be at the front seems a really wasted opportunity. Plus, there's space to breathe down there and the air is nice and cool!
Just a word of caution as well. It will be absolutely bloody freezing in Sheffield this saturday and there is nowhere to put your coat when you get in (no cloakroom) and nowhere to get any kind of food and drink outside the arena.
I don't think I could stand queueing for six hours to get a barrier spot; not after a 4-5 hour drive up from Brighton. I'm probably going to start queuing at around 4.00-5.00 and hope for the best (i.e. a spot that isn't right at the back of the arena; even just somewhere in the middle would be nice).

It's impossible to predict what it will be like. Hopefully the cold weather will keep people away. I really don't know what to do. I don't want to spend hours queing when there's no food ro drink and no lavs either. Also, I have the added complication of getting my son to his sisters house and taking along my missus to the show, who has never seen them before, and she's getting her hair cut at 2pm!
Gonna feel stupid wearing a big parka in the standing area but can't see any way around it!
You won't feel the benefit when you leave and it's -1 outside if you keep your coat on. I suppose it's quite hard to provide cloakroom facilities for 14,000 people though. It reminds me of Magna which was freezing walking around but during the Pulp show I was sweltering in a wool pea coat.

I might well concur. God help those coming from sunnier climes. Or even anywhere South of Gateshead.
I'm in Gateshead & I am looking forward to fleeing south to Sheffield & their tropical climate. Me & my mates don't do queuing & most if them are seating anyway. I think we'll be arriving at a sensible time & tucking down the side somewhere & most importantly taking it easy. I'm far to old to even consider getting down the front!
Ughhh all of you who get to the front have to make a promise not to talk about how close you were! I wish I could but me and my sister have too many medical problems to stand that long. Maybe I should have done what I saw a few pensioners do at Richard Hawley when they got to the barrier then unfolded some camping stools and sat and waited for him to come on stage....
That's really annoying about there not being a cloakroom. I have circulation problems and can't be cold for very long at all! Grumble. Dunno what I'm gonna do.
Hmm, i dont know about queing for hours...Been there done that, not sure im up for it now. Earliest ive ever waited was around midday for the London Garage gig in 2000. And there was already about 3-4 people there lol. We wont be in Sheffield until 1pm and then we've got to find our hotel. Im absolutly full of cold too atm, hoping that will have cleared up by the weekend. If im feeling up for it, i may get down there for about 4?, convincing OH to wait in the cold is another matter...gah..at 5ft tall i need a good spot at the front!

That makes me very happy! Can't decide if I should bring a coat. Will it be ok shoved under my seat?
Hm... I think I will be around in the morning to check what's going on and then decide what to do with queueing up. I'll be arriving on Thursday already so I should be able to have a proper breakfast and all on Saturday. I'll probably bring some snacks and drink. Being one of the crazy people that showed up early for some Radiohead gigs that year, haha. The weather is a bit colder here in Germany at the moment so... a coat and a hoodie should be okay. Garbage bags are multi purpose for sitting on and for rain protection
Hi, just signed up to the forum. Saturday will be my first time seeing Pulp and I'm a bit excited!
The only small fly in the ointment is the prospect of queuing in a freezing Sheffield carpark for hours, possibly without a coat since there's no cloakroom
I'll also be there on my own, so If anyone else is in a similar situation and fancies meeting up or something, let me know. It might be quite nice to have some company!

If you're just going from car to arena you probably won't need one but there'll be no problem sticking your coat under the seat if you feel you need one. A jumper would probably do for you. (look at me, all wardrobe tips and everything!)
I must have been the only person not complaining about the cold there as I was recovering from flu and a sickness bug. I was still throwing up on the way there, and I sweated the illness away while they played and felt great afterwards!
This thread is evidence that Pulp fans are getting in a bit is it not? I don't believe we'd have been having this conversation 10 years ago!
Fred - plan is to get tram & arrive for 7:30/8 and I envisage we will walk straight in with minimal queuing. Under your seat is a perfect place to keep a coat. I need to find a suitable jumper for standing in. I hope they play Help The Aged now. We could wave our cardigans & tap our walking sticks.
I think whatever time I turn up I'm just gonna look for Jazza and say 'hi'. So if a strange man starts talking to you Jazza it might be me, or it might not you never know round Attercliffe. (There is a swingers club just down the road from the Arena)
There's no way I could stand around for hrs outside in december. I'll be doing my usual thing, that has never let me down - go in quite late and wriggle my way down to the front. It doesn't get me on the barrier, which of course I wouldn't expcect, but I usually make it no less than a few rows back, and anyway, you can't dance when you're knees are pushed up against the barrier. You really don't need to queue for hrs to get near the front, unless you want an actual barrier spot.

If it's not already been mentioned in this thread.. the Arena is also home to the Sheffield Steelers Ice Hockey team, so it does tend to get a bit chilly in there at times!
Screw queueing, I'm heading to Centertainment for a tasty Handmade Burger at 6.00pm and heading in when we're done (probly between 7.30/8.00). I've never been a fan of the front pit, I like to hang on the edge of it or close to the middle if not.
Meanwhile in the pulpwiki poll and 3 days to go She's A Lady has broken clear and looks like the clear favourite of songs people want to hear the most at Sheff with 42 votes. Clearly, we love the way she moves - the way she moves. Death II and My Legendary Girfriend are battling it out for runners-up while Ansaphone has come out of nowhere to grab fourth place. It's A Dirty World slips to fifth.
At the other end some sick fecker actually voted for Silence. I vote that they should be named and shamed!
This morning's train disruptions have put the fear of god into me...bit edgy about snow/cold weather causing transport problems. If I missed the show due to being stranded at home I would probably just crumple in a corner and die a little!
I'm hoping it will do its worst today and be cleared up on the main roads by Friday when we have to drive up. We are used to slogging our way up the M5/M1 to Yorkshire in December, it's just usually a couple of weeks later!

JayJay if that makes you old I've been old since I was 17. I don't want to be too distracted thinking about how much my legs hurt and wondering if the guy behind me is feeling me up or his hand is just been unfortunately crushed against me to listen to my favourite band in the world play my favourite songs in the world :)
Yay Lauren! That makes me feel better. I know what you mean about the guys too - although more recently I've found that I don't need to worry about them touching me but crushing me to death! (Apparently guys of 6 feet aren't able to see girls of 5 feet when they're at the front!)
I should apologise now to anyone who has a problem with a guy of 6 foot 3/4 standing at the front!
If he's that guy with the beard and the mic he's meant to be there. But seriously, I'm 6'2" and a big guy, I don't mean to cause anyone any grief but I'm often just left a bystander with little option but to obey the physical laws. So, sorry if I might upset anyone at any time for any reason.
^Sorry guys wasn't getting at anyone! I know it's difficult for everyone at the front!!! Also, I didn't mean that people are trouble because they are tall, but that I'm trouble because I'm short :) Most people are lovely about it, but some really don't care if they are elbowing others in the head (I'm sure that doesn't apply to anyone here - but if it does, stop it lol!)
Short people feel comfier on public transport, especially planes where us lanky lot are packt like sardines in a crushdtinbox. Good vantage points at gigs is our reward.
Please tell me I'm not the only person who doesn't seem to be able to get off a bus without wacking their head on the wing mirror. I've nearly knocked myself out a few times...
The only down side to being tall at a gig is crowd surfers kicking us in the back of the head. My new policy - if your feet go anywhere near my head I will tie your shoe laces together.
Being short, I've still had a few near-misses with crowd surfers' feet as they've sailed above my head! I'm in seating this time, though that was simply because it was all that was left on pre-sale and didn't want to risk leaving it to general sale in case cruel act of fate/broken alarm clock/broadband crash stopped me getting a ticket at all. Worried it won't be the same but determined to make the most of it anyway.
Think all-day queuing days are behind me too - queued for ages to see Radiohead once and got right at the barrier, in the middle, but the crowd was really surging behind me and most of my energy was spent not enjoying the gig but trying to stop myself getting crushed. Sadly that's what my main memories of the evening now are, all these years on!
Been a few rows back at other gigs and that's been best of all worlds really. At V96, I'd got quite a good spot but as soon as Cast came on, there was a massive crowd surge and my trainer somehow fell off, and before I could grab it the crowd surged in the opposite direction and I was carried away with it - it was lost forever. Had to stand reasonably far back after that to minimise the risk of ending up with a broken foot. Pulp were still ace though, at a slight distance!
Hello! I arrived in Sheffield this evening. No, I'm not planning to be first in the queue - I'm sitting. Have been in London for work and wasn't worth going back to Cornwall for 24 hrs. 15 yr old son joins me tomorrow. Looking forward to exploring the city.

The one in the peace gardens is the wrong one as far as I know. I always presumed it was the one at the top of Fragate Jarvis meant, that was a common meeting place. Nobody met at the fountain in the Peace Gardens as it used to be full of drunks who'd swear at you.
Time to come out from under my rock, almost there... I must try to log on here more often, but I've been in a Pulp-less world these past months. Can't wait for tomorrow, the missus and I will be braving the cold to try to get on the barrier - I usually prefer to sit these days, but this is Pulp...
(Sarah, I need to message you as I owe you some precious items!)
Hello gang. I'm likely to have a spare ticket - seated, block 105. Face value or thereabouts, if anyone's interested. I'm going up to Sheffield tonight so could hand it over tomorrow for cash.
Have a great time everyone, absolutely shattered and hoping my daughter lets me have more than three hours sleep tonight! Will be looking on here with some booze in my hand after the gig. Enjoy!
"The Boxettes won't be supporting our show at Sheffield Arena tomorrow. Instead, we will be showing some home movies including a recent find that hasn't been seen since 1979 xxx"

I thought that 'officially' the Fargate fountain has moved to the Peace Gardens now? I'm sure they have the same name..

Oh for goodness sake, if that's actually happening I'll be gutted! Sounds brilliant!
Not sure it's true though, probably just BS from some person running the FB page isn't it?

Dunno, the one on Fargate was called the Goodwin fountain, I always call the other one 'that fountain in the Peace Gardens'. There can be only one!

Do you have tickets for the blue or red entrance?
If anyone sees me at the blue doors, say hi - green coat to brave the cold
Now I reaaaally gotta see when I'll show up there... I hope that the rain won't be too bad. There isn't really an overhang at the point where the queueing should be so I hope it won't be too crazy.
I already did my little tour today and saw all the interesting stuff around Sheffield. I'm really glad that I took an extra day for that.
It's going to be a special night. Was thinking of getting to the arena quite late to try and skip the queues (Boxettes? meh) but I'll definitely be braving the cold now!
