I have just listend to Jarvis' 2nd solo album, having not done do for a very very long time. I was recommending it to a friend who might like it. But... it's freaking awesome! If Pulp do new material it's gonna be different to this but - I can understand now why Jarvis wouldn't want to make the big leap. Just do it I say.
If you're advocating new Jarvis solo material I wholeheartedly agree. I always really liked FC and I'm not afraid to say so! That record came out in '09 and it's been 3 years with no new Jarvis music. I don't care whether it's with Pulp or solo I'd just like to see him releasing new material.
Ahh...that last song. One of my absolute favourite Jarvis (or Pulp) songs of all time. It's one of my abiding memories of the Glasto he played at. I think it's a supreme piece of pop music.
Love Further Complications (the song) itself too. Vintage Cocker.
I think I must be the only person who doesn't like "You're in my Eyes" but I feel like 'doesn't like' is too strong...I just think it could be shorter. But I've always preferred the first solo album. I think it has more emotion.

I agree with you Tricia. I don't know why I don't like it, I just don't click with it. I love the Poolski remix though, it wasn't until hearing that I really appreciated the lyrics.
I can't decide between Further Complications or Jarvis, they're both brilliant albums and it's rare I listen to one with out listening to the other straight after. I wouldn't change either of them other than leave You're in my Eyes off FC.
You're in my eyes is fine but I've never loved it really. It just all seems a bit quiet and then fizzles out (sorry, I know that will offend a few people). As for FC (album) I really liked it but now hardly ever play it, Jarvis (album) has always been more consistant and IMO the better of the two
I'm much more likely to listen to individual songs off FC when compared to the debut, but I'll rarely listen to FC from start to finish, whereas I listen to the debut album that way quite a lot. FC is ace though, Caucasian Blues is my favourite. But it's not the album it could have been...
I think the main reason I disagree with 'fizzles out' is because, when the Jarvis gig at Glastonbury ended with that song it too 'fizzled out' but in such a perfect way. Everyone just slowly stopped playing, but the glitterball kept spinning. It was beautiful, and I'll always associate that with the song...
How can you ignore a beautiful song like Slush, Ian?
It's ok but nothing to shout about. There are some moments on there that sound quite promising (ie the intros to "Caucasian Blues" and "Angela") but turn out nowhere near as good.
I saw Discosong live before it was released. That, Never Said I Was Deep and Leftovers were all revelations live on that tour he did in late 2008 to help celebrate Rough Trade's 30th. Six months later, the album came out and I couldn't believe how hushed and mannered the vocals were when Jarvis had been belting them out brilliantly on-stage. That and the at times lifeless production on the record plus the brass on NSIWD...no fuckin' need! I can't believe it's an Albini record, the live energy from those songs is sucked away significantly on record in my opinion.
Having said that I think something like Hold Still is one of the best songs he's ever written and stuff like the title track, Angela, Pilchards and Homewrecker do work better.

I agree with this 100%... After seeing Jarvis in Manchester in 2008 I remember thinking that he was about to release one of the very best albums of his career. A shame it didn't turn out like that.
The songs are there, good enough although the best one (girls like it too) was missing, but i agree the production is a bit of a let down. they went for a late 70s sound when a late 60s would have been the best choice.
I think the blame lies more at the door of the mixing and mastering than the production per se. I like alot of the sounds on the record, especially some of the guitar work.
