My missus just got back from the dress-rehersal of the Olympic opening ceremony. She didn't really tell me what she saw, everyone is in the spirit and keeping tight-lipped.
But she did tell me a little about what she heard. There was conspicuoucly no Oasis or Radiohead, or Pulp. A mere smattering of Blur's Song Two to represent a whole peroid that was - after all - milked for all its political capital.
There were place holders in the run-through, to 'save the surprise'.
Well, the other two are pretty major international exports, but Common People wouldn't be too out of place (even if the band were nowhere near).
Radiohead are hardly likely to lower themselves to this. Personally, an appearance by Oasis seems more likely, despite the split.
Or perhaps the Spice Girls...
Apparently it was Bowie heavy. It would be amazing if he appeared to provide a lyric or two. Has he performed since the heart attack?
Anyway, just thought I'd share that second-hand spoiler. Not that I've said anything that wasn't in the media already! It's the finale that is still unknown - they didn't run through that.

When did he slag them off? I know he said it was easier working with Graham than Dave and Alex - due to Graham still being a working musician, but more than that I've not read.
Anyway, they're doing a few warm up gigs and then doing Hyde Park. As well as releasing their fantastic new Double A Side on which there, surely, has to be at least one song that people will like!
Manics turned down the Olympics (being sport related) but happily appeared on Strictly Come Dancing (Bruce Forsyth related). Hmm...seems an odd case of double standards!
The Manics on 'hiatus' seem to do more gigs than some bands do at their peak!

Orbit is a bit of an idiot. Re-phrase that, a MASSIVE idiot. He's tweeted rubbish about Blur and more specifically Damon ever since they stopped working with him, and the new single (if you've heard it of course, I'm a bit of a Blur fan as well as Pulp) I believe sounds much better than this below, which is the William Orbit version.
To me it sounds like they just wanted a new sound, and Graham has come out since and reiterated that. I don't blame them really, the WO version is auto-tuned to buggery.
I think the band comments were taken out of proportion too, I think he was trying to say that while him and Graham still do music regularly, Alex and Dave don't at all really - which is true. While it appears I am trying to protect him somewhat, I do think that Damon is probably a bit of an idiot to work with. I don't think it's a case of 'Damon hates the whole band' though.

Dad reckons Led Zeppelin. Mum reckons the Stones. I reckon Bowie and Jagger reprising Dancing in the Street, with McCartney on piano and the remaining members of Queen and Pink Floyd sharing out the instruments between them. And Grace Jones spinning a hula hoop.
My dad has a very elaborate idea that it will be British music through the ages; Starting with Cliff Richards then Paul McCartney with Pipes of Peace (possibly with Ringo on drums), Rolling Stones, Bowie and they will end with a child/ new band
'Talking about Blur's future, Albarn said he didn't think there would be any more records or shows. Specifically, he said he could no longer collaborate with bassist Alex James and drummer Dave Rowntree in the studio: "I find it very easy to record with Graham [Coxon]. He's a daily musician. With the other two, it's harder for them to reconnect. You know what I mean? It's fine when we play live it's really magical still but actually recording new stuff, and swapping musical influences it's quite difficult."'
Its kinda hard to interpret that any way other than they're ostensibly no longer "good enough" to work with the almighty Sir Damon. Plus this gem:
'Dreams of Blur finally releasing a eighth album can rest easy for now: In the current issue of NME, producer William Orbit (who worked on Blur's album 13) said that he had been recording with the band, but that Damon Albarn halted sessions three weeks ago: "The new stuff sounded amazing. Then it all stopped suddenly. It was all over with Damon, and the rest of the band were like, 'Is this it?'" The magazine highlights a Tweet by Orbit from the end of March, responding to a fan's query regarding new material: "Blur could have been good. But Damon, brilliant and talented though he is, is kinda a shit to the rest of Blur." '
Not that I think anyone's really surprised what a twat he still is, but can you imagine Jarvis saying something like that about the rest of Pulp? These are the people that made him famous. Does he think anyone cares about Rocket Juice and the Cow That Jumped Over the Moon or whatever half-assed ephemera he's releasing this week? But I digress.
Not sure what the exact reason was they declined, Nicky said something about "loving the sport but hating all the other nonsense" Hmmm. Have no idea what strictly come dancing is, I'm kinda too afraid to ask....
I thoroughly agree that Damon can be a bit of a nob, but I really don't think he's said/done anything untoward with regards to Blur of late. As is well known, Damon and Graham are still gigging musicians. Alex is a farmer and Dave is a lawyer. Alex's musical skill has degenerated anyway - the bass parts on Under the Westway are distressingly dull!
And re: 'the nonsense', the Manics thought that the was a good idea:
I think UTW sounds a bit derivative of their other classics, and that line: "But I am going to sing Hallelujah
Sing it out loud and sing it to you" Bleuh! Much prefer The Puritan.
Yeah, I suppose it could have been taken out of context, it just seemed kind of belittling, you know?
Hrmm.... so it's a dancing-contest kind of show? Its pretty cheesy looking, but from what I saw doesnt look too dissimiliar from TOTP or late-night show thing. I'm sure somewhere Richey is crying, though.
Strictly Come Dancing is Dancing With The Stars. The title a mash up of Strictly Ballroom and an old British show called Come Dancing. Obviously they had to change the name for the rest of the world. I'm surprised to hear The Manics were on it.
TOTP is about music, at least. 'Strictly..' is about Z list stars dancing with professional dancers. All compered by Bruce Forsyth. It seems he means nothing to you, so I'm going to assume you're American and thus suggest that you imagine the now senile Bill Cosby is hosting it.
Fred, the Manics' last album was "their last attempt at mass communication". Hence communicating through that I suppose. I don't have a problem with them appearing on it, but I do have a problem with them appearing on it and then slagging off the 'rubbish' around the Olympigs. Just seems a bit contrary.
Well, if PulpBristol is a Blur apologist, I guess I'm a manics apologist. And yeah, I'm an american mildly obsessed with british culture, but there's a lot that falls outside my periphery. I think even they would admit its a shit show, but I guess the idea was to push Postcards through the most mainstream channels as possible, for better or for worse. Don't get me wrong, they've put out a lot of shit, but they've made (IMO) some of the greatest albums that are still really dear to me. And even if the new material doesnt always stand up (although Journal for Plague Lovers was great!) I still admire them for being the one "brit-pop"-esque band that kept going. They didnt just fade into obscurity or do the whole break-up/slag-each-other-off-then-happily-reunite-when-the-offers-became-lucrative-enough thing. Its kind why I would love to see another Pulp album, because even if it doesnt live up to the impossible standards we've probably set in our minds, it would be such a creatively daring risk and I would have so much respect for them taking it to that next level, and not just breaking up after the obligatory reunion tour was over. But we'll have to wait and see.
Holden, I agree that "the idea was to push Postcards through the most mainstream channels as possible, for better or for worse" which I don't have a problem with. I just find it odd they could do Come Dancing but not want to do the Olympigs...
I love a bit of strictly. i'm sure jarvis joked in an interview that he would do it
i'd love him having a shower in the waterfall in i'm a celeb a bit more though....
i've also been thinking that if pulp played the olympic opening ceremony i'd die a bit inside (yes i know/hope they are not doing it) but i'd LOVE to see him hump the monitors with billions of people watching the opening ceremony. do billions watch on tv?
I don't know who'll be performing, but the playlist throughout the opening sequence is shown below. Have to say that I don't think it's too bad. Certainly a few songs I'd dance to there, so it can't be bad. Bonus marks for getting the "c-word" played via Pretty Vacant.

I think the Manics are looking forward to the ceremony tonight...
"How I long for the days when the Olympics were about SPORT, not all this other tedious rubbish. I would rather watch 12hrs of Olympic water polo than the opening ceremony; at least it's sport xx"
I'm pleasantly surprised by that playlist - not what i'd choose but I was expecting way more of the x-factor lot. Saying that we still don't know who's going to be performing yet.
On the subject, has anyone HEARD that Muse song? Good god in heaven. "Im gonnaWIIIIINNN I will NEVER LOOOOSSSE because I WILL WINNNNN always WINNING and WINWINIWN and then Losinnnnng justkiddingimeanttosayWINNNNN VENGENCEEEEEE IS MINNNEEE..."
Because if there's one thing the Olympics are known for - its Venegence.

I don't know about in the UK, but here they've been playing snippets of London Calling on all the commercials, but cutting out pretty much all of the lyrics that aren't "London calling". I guess they thought the apocalyptic imagery wasn't setting the right spirit...

Well done Danny Boyle for bigging up the NHS and getting a lesbian kiss shown in some middle eastern countries on TV for the first time! Tht was astounding in places.

It's like during Euro 2012, Kia had a sponsor ident thing every advert break using the Buzzcock's "Ever Fallen In Love", to sugggest you couldn't help but fall in love with their supermini hatchback, but I couldn't help myself from completing the sentence each time it came on.

Well, normally i'm a bitter cynical old boot, but i fucking loved that opening ceremony..... apart from mccartney. but i loved the internet guy (too lazy to look up his name) and the social networking bit, and the kids lighting the flame, i nearly cried, but i had my hard face reputation to live up to
prob be the only thing i watch, apart from when i'm at work underneath 9 different tv screens showing sport
what was wrong with Hey Jude - for me, that was a highlight. Beatles are by far the most iconic thing Britain has produced and the entire stadium (and beyond) singing along really showed the unity that the olympics are meant to represent. No other song could have done that and personally I thought it was heartwarming.
Did anyone else think it was ironic when the people who were carrying the olympic flag because of their attempts at keeping peace handed it over to the army? and I swear I saw a bloke in the crowd doing a Nazi salute when the German team came on.
I enjoyed the unexpected bits of comedy: James Bond and (bad comedian) Rowan Atkinson - he wasn't quite Mr Bean was he? And felt weirdly proud when Dizzee was singing Bonkers, just can't fathom why.... And the torch lighting was monumentally badass. I recorded it and stayed up til 4.30 am watching it and only ffwded the French speech. Was expecting to ffwd vast chunks of it.
Generally I prefer blackadder to bean but in this instance I think bean was the right call. It had to be funny in any language and it had to be quite simple. I thought it was funny. Maybe because it was unexpected but still funny. Rowan Atkinson can make a pretty basic idea really funny with the perfect expression. I was actually quite annoyed when Jarvis revealed in Mother Brother Lover that the 'bad comedian' was Rowan Atkinson.
Having gone to an international school I can vouch that generally foreigners find Mr.Bean hilarious. Lots of my (none-british) friends really don't get blackadder though I prefer it.

Agreed. I have a soft spot for Atkinson and Bean. Never fully got into Blackadder but his stuff in NotTheNineOClockNews was great.
Nothing wrong with Hey Jude, I love that song. But Paul McCartney makes me cringe these days. The only blessing was that he didn't do his hideous trademark thumbs up and gurn pose at the end.
I thought the whole thing was mostly brilliant, too. Thought the live acts (McCartney and Oldfield // Dizzee Rascal and Arctic Monkeys) nicely divied up the old/young indie/grime categories.
Also, as Jazza said, Mr. Bean is enormous worldwide, so it made sense to include him. Thought it was quite a good sequence actually, especially given that Rowan Atkinson hasn't performed live in about 20-odd years now I think!
Enjoyed McCartney, too. A bit naff of course, but then again it is Macca. Thought the longer hair suited him quite well, too. Looking good for 70!
I've seen him do stuff more recently than that. Both him on stage alone, I think he was a French waiter in one and a teacher taking registration in another. Neither were hilarious.
I might be getting mixed up. I've seen these retrospective clip shows, but I have definitely seen him do live more recently. I think there was a one where he was a priest as well.
