I did a quick search and couldn't find any twitter-related stuff on here since January, but surely it's been mentioned that the https://twitter.com/#!/reallyjcocker twitter account has now been verified?

It's CLEARLY not him either, he'd surely never be as self referencing as to tweet stuff such as "Putting out a line of DIY furniture. Easy to follow instructions: that goes in there, that goes in there...", and I also seriously doubt, if he did have twitter, he'd also constantly reference other members of Pulp. It looks like it's been put together by a particularly irritating Pulp fangirl.

Well just get them to take the verification off. It's clearly an ego thing- you love the fact that you have loads of followers etc blah blah blah, otherwise you'd just email twitter and say "oops, this is a parody account, I don't want to mislead anyone, please unverify the account". I can't think of ANY other reason that you wouldn't contact twitter about their mistake.

"In preparation for our trip to America, have bought everyone replicas of Geri Halliwell's Union Jack dress. It suits Russell best."- tweeted on the 24th Jan, 2012, after Russell had left the band. That confirms it's not him, then.

Oh, turns out that it's Tricia off here: Tricia, there are loads of fake Jarvis accounts, who cares. My problem with this is that you've had it verified and people ACTUALLY think it's Jarvis, which is why you've got nearly 20,000 followers. Just swallow your pride/ego and get twitter to take the verification symbol off, fucks sake.

Thank you so much for making assumptions about me. I had a lot of followers before it ever got verified and it's not about that at all. It was verified for a month before I even realized and I'm honestly too lazy, but I've changed the web info which, according to twitter removes the verification badge so there you are.

fair enough :)

and i'm not making assumptions. Firstly, when I first passed comment on the twitter account I had absolutely no way of knowing it was you. Secondly, you perfectly fit the bill of being a 'fangirl'. It's not a criticism, as you're clearly proud of the fact. And yes, i find your approach to Pulp irritating (but not you personally, as I don't know you), but everyone on tumblr loves it, so who am I to judge. I'm just a very serious fan I suppose, I find that posting funny pictures of band members and blogging about how cute they all are extremely reductive.

The music, the history and the context of the band are far, far more important to me. Stuff like Sturdy's book and especially Owen Hatherley's Uncommon are very important- looking at the social, political and geographical context of Pulp, a band to whom there is really no comparison, and who are SO much more than the caricature, cartoony, Carry On-esque Pulp as is shown in popular media, especially Tumblr. But I accept that enjoying the band in that way is equally as valid, just as enjoying 'Breathless' because it looks French and cool is equally as valid as enjoying it because of it's importance in post-war filmmaking etc. But on exactly how you appreciate Pulp, we'll just have to agree to disagree. Can't say fairer than that, right?

I find it incredibly insulting to suggest that because I blog about the band in one way, I only enjoy them in that way and couldn't possibly wrap my head around the politics or social influence of pulp's work. But I guess you must know more than me so I'll just go daydream about fucking Steve Mackey and not worry my head with anything complicated while you hold your nose up and act like you're better than me.

I'm not acting like i'm better than you. I just think that the way you (mainly) appreciate Pulp is extremely shallow, in MY opinion. Unless you have another blog dedicated to detailed analysis of their songs. But to be honest, I've never seen you in the bootleg threads on here, nor threads about their early stuff. Which is fine, but don't get all huffy just cause I DARE to criticise you. Agree to disagree. My only problem with you is that you were deceiving people on twitter. The end.

Just to clarify- this was NOT meant to be a personal attack on you, in any way! It was meant to be about the twitter account, which I had no idea you ran. Your defensiveness about the twitter just rubbed me the wrong way, and you did actually ask me why I thought you were a fangirl etc, so it's definitely not a character assassination. And of COURSE I accept that you can enjoy a band in different ways, and I'm sure you enjoy Pulp in the way I do- it's just the way you mainly represent this Pulp obsession on the internet that I don't really agree with personally.

It's ONLY my personal opinion, I don't think I'm a better fan than you in any way- I mean, I can hardly talk, what I know about Pulp is absolutely nothing compared to Stephen, Sturdy or Eamon, for example. I just wanted to explain exactly why I found the twitter irritating, seeing as you pressed me on it. I don't know you personally and I'm sure you're lovely, it's only your one approach to this one thing that I disagree with!! So absolutely no harm meant, and I'm so sorry if I upset you, and for my at times harsh words in the posts above- I just got a little annoyed and, as usual, was less tactful than I should have been. I am also a lovely person in real life, honestly!

p.s. PLEASE do get that twitter unverified, though. It's unfair- there are lots of people on my twitter and tumblr feeds who genuinely think it's Jarvis, and I just don't think that's right.

I've contacted twitter as well, so barring complications, the verified symbol should be removed at some point in the near future. I'm sorry as well. I just see too much of people on the internet acting superior if they don't find a band attractive, but in my experience that follows from actual being passionate about the band. I didn't mean to start a fight either and I'm sorry I offended you.

No no, you didn't offend me at all- I love arguments and debates in general and I've studied this kind of thing a bit (commodification/post-modernism/musicology in general) so it's personally quite important to me. But I often forget that just because I rarely take things personally, other people won't necessarily feel the same. So I am really sorry, I didn't mean to make you so stressed out and upset. I have to admit, I do find your sexual attraction to Pulp band members very, very strange (and I do wonder how accepted it would be for a man to say such overtly sexual things about a female pop star), but maybe that's because I'm a heterosexual male, and anyway I completely accept that their music is the most important thing to you. The fact you find them attractive is just coincidence, I suppose (though Jarvis is extremely good looking, and I challenge anyone to deny that!)

Also, I had the most surreal night on tumblr last night. What a weird place, it's as if every unstable young person hides there, pretending to be nice, just waiting for their world to be threatened. The best bit was when some Canadian fan got SO UPSET that they told me I should be ashamed being British because their "PARENTS COME FROM COUNTRIES WHICH HAVE SEEN THE RESULTS OF BRITISH COLONIALISM!!!"

I mean, wow.

Just to wade in with my BIG FAT OAR.

Fake accounts being verified. Frustrating indeed. However, humourous twitters do amuse me the odd time I do go onto there. Personally I'd pick a fake Russell one rather than fake Jarvis, but that's just my taste.

I would query what's with the term 'fangirl' though. It seems a little pejorative. I'm clearly a fan boy, as are most of the 'good fans' that are named. But what's wrong with just 'fan'? As far as I know, whether ones genitals face outwards or inwards probably doesn't affect the degree of one's love for a band?

Regarding 'making assumptions', the term 'you love the fact that...' clearly is making assumptions. I know that when people make assumptions about what I'm thinking/feeling it really riles me, so I'm presuming this has had a similar effect on Tricia, which seems a little unfair. "It seems to be that you love the fact that...' is fairer and less emotive.

"I'm just a very serious fan I suppose..."
Apparently I'm a serious fan, however...

"I find that posting funny pictures of band members and blogging about how cute they all are extremely reductive."
...I do find the photo of Mark as bank manager hilarious. And not sure about various members being cute, but the way they look is certainly a very important part of Pulp's appeal. They weren't 'Sleeperblokes', and Jarvis - for one - did promote himself as a sex symbol/pop star which is what he'd decided to make himself. Hence I don't see a problem in commenting on this sort of thing.

"Stuff like Sturdy's book and especially Owen Hatherley's Uncommon are very important- looking at the social, political and geographical context of Pulp"

Whilst I love the Gospel According to Mark, it's 'cos it's telling a story and telling of a fan's notions of what was happening through those times. I personally hate the idea of a social/political context to Pulp being done like a dry academic paper. Geographical fair enough though, as those other Sheffield bands are important, which is why I've been keen to promote the old Premspeak tracks which has, I believe, had a fair few downloads now.

"who are SO much more than the caricature, cartoony, Carry On-esque Pulp as is shown in popular media"
I personally like that charicature/cartoony aspect to Pulp. It's part of the image that they created for themselves after all.

"just as enjoying 'Breathless' because it looks French and cool is equally as valid as enjoying it because of it's importance in post-war filmmaking etc."
It's an enjoyable film, but both the guy and the girl are nobs. Is it that important? Hadn't really thought about it.

"I just think that the way you (mainly) appreciate Pulp is extremely shallow, in MY opinion."
Again, as a serious fan I do object to this. I'm not sure what's so shallow about loving a band for the bits that really move you. I also enjoyed Tricia's story of her trip to Banks Pottery. I've done the same myself, and also gigglingly made my way down Jarvis' street in London and stared at his house, and - perhaps more worryingly - also been party to an occasion in which Russell's house was located and looked at. Boringly normal, sadly, for the record. I also held a party wherein we played a few of the Pulp games from the old Discovery magazine. I do hope this is ok?

"I do find your sexual attraction to Pulp band members very, very strange (and I do wonder how accepted it would be for a man to say such overtly sexual things about a female pop star)"

It depends really. If said female popstar promotes themselves as a sexual thing ala Jarvis, or humps the bass for the duration of a gig ala Steve, then it's fair game I think.

Well the term fanboy is equally applicable! I just find an obsession with a bands personal life a little unpleasant. Just an opinion blah blah blah.

It's like twitter but for blogs, and a haven for bitchy, overgrown teenagers (like me). Basically you follow other blogs and reblog things (mainly 'cool' looking photos) that other pople post. I don't really use it like that- I use it as a normal blog, due to the fact you can get 'followers' it's more immediate and satisfying than Wordpress or something. But mainly, it's absolutely horrible, it's pretty much post modernism condensed. Everything is taken out of context and reduced to a pretty picture- you get stuff like Brutalism blogs, which sound interesting but are nothing more than photos of 'retro'-looking buildings, and not in any way about Brutalism itself.

I'm gonna be honest Calum, in the years I've been frequenting this message board I've found virtually all the negativity and general holier-than-thou troll-ness (of which there's not a lot!) stems entirely from you. You seriously need to cool off and grow up a little. Good lord, people are being slaughtered in Syria and you're throwing a fit over a fake Jarvis twitter account. And the assertion that Tricia's liking Pulp "in the wrong way?" Because you're the authority on how people can enjoy music? Brother, you need to go outside and talk to some real-life girls.

Twitter has a history of verifying fake accounts, when Rupert Murdoch joined, someone set up a fake account for his wife and that got verified!

Not an active member of the Pulp fan community but I thought I'd stop by. I saw that this guy has opened up his ask box again after the tantrum he threw but I didn't really want to engage in round II of his straw man games.

This poster made the assertion that britpop fans in North America are incredibly depressed at not being able to see their favourite bands and implied that they sit around wanking over pictures of them (which... what an strange thing to believe is specific to North America, tbh). I simply pointed out that I have actually seen all of my favourite britpop bands via this amazing thing called travel, and that I'm quite happy in Canada with no desire to live in the UK. For this, I was labelled a closeted Anglophile and a pro-Canadian xenophobe, which I find ridiculous and said so - I don't think that not wanting to be called an anglophile, which, for me, denotes someone with a romanticized view of Britain, or stating that I don't want to live in a country that has oppressed my people, my parents included, makes me either hysterical or a xenophobe tbh. I simply stated that this was the stupidest application of the word xenophobic that I'd ever seen. Really, the assertion that non-British fans are inherently inferior to those in Britain would be more xenophobic, I'd think.

In any case, I absolutely could not be made upset by someone who thinks that the effects of colonization are as far in the past as those of the Roman empire. ... Incidentally, I just (today!) finished my undergrad in Latin and Classical Civilization, ha.

I never made any assertions as to the character of British people - I only said that this individual, in addition to being a moron, clearly has a stick wedged up his ass. And that calling people on the internet 'sniveling brats', rather than making you sound smart, makes you sound like a pathetically cartoonish villain - very Severus Snape.

There is essentially no point in talking with someone so fatuous that they'd actually bring up Bela Tarr and Marxists in the context of Pulp. However, for the record, if you actually read academic articles and yknow, meet academics, you'll find that a lot of them are 'fangirlish.' And as I said, Morrissey being an obsessive fan who collected rare photos of James Dean/NYD etc didn't result in the end of music.  Nor did Brett Anderson rhapsodizing about how beautiful Bowie smelled.

And I know this is tl;dr but that's how I roll, tbh. Bye and thanks you guys for all the bootlegs etc!

Oh.
My.
God.

fuck off back to tumblr you cretin.

p.s.- i never closed my ask box. it must have disabled you from messaging me cos of all the mental stuff you kept sending me. I called you an anglophile because you like British bands. You even referred to Britain as "the cultural motherland". You absolutely reek of a desperate, self righteous undergrad, and you'll look back on all this faux-intellectualising in a few years and CRINGE.
