...Nick Banks, Steve Mackey, Antony Genn, Steven Havenhand, Magnus Doyle, Pete Mansell, Captain Sleep, Tim Allcard, Michael Paramore, David Hinkler, Debbie Lime, Danny Hunt, Michael Ash, Nick Eastwood, Rob Barton, Charlie Collins...

All of these people have played music in a band with Russell Senior at some point. Lots of them have been interviewed about this experience at some point, although a few have not.

However...there are a few others who are not on this list. And I've somehow managed to track one of the buggers down who's agreed to answer some questions. I'll let you speculate as to their identity until I'm able to give some of their answers!

What better way to spend a wet Friday? :)

It's not that bloke who was in the Bath Bankers (or was it Nightmares?) who posted on the Fall forum is it?

Well done (you swine). Have you spoken to him before or summat?

Yes, it's Paul - the Bath Bankers bass player. I've asked him a shed load of stuff and he's been hugely open with replies. There's at least one cracking story in there, as well as "...I also recall a spooky discordant repetitive melodic song about a fairground and some scary people who worked there..."

And this is back in 1980! I'll put some mp3s of Fairground, Maureen, Back in LA, Srpski Jeb and...any others...? to see if he recognises them.

I need to do some work before I respond again. Does anyone have any questions for him?

:realisation that 'cracking story' was already relayed by Sturdy in T&B from R's own mouth:

Further realisation that in said chapter, R also gives stories about Back in LA and Maureen too.

Sturdy - there's just too much damn info in your book to take in even now. And I've read it twice cover to cover!

No, haven't spoken to him. Just stumbled across that Fall forum post (presumably the same one you tracked him down through?) and thought "ah!" then didn't do anything about it.

What's the story - the riot after the Pulp/New Model Soldier concert in Bath?

Nope, he's not got that one. He does stay friends with Russell 'til at least '82 though, but I've not heard anything Pulpy yet.

I'll ask a few rounds of questions and then stick something up here. It's actually something pretty weird about Russell really!

And yes, t'was that same post. I was attempting to track down anything to do with 'Bath Banker'

btw considered asking the ebay seller of the fanzine if you can get in touch with the buyer...?

You'd have done it once, Mr. S!

Fred, what would you like me to write a book on?

You seem to be doing a lot of research and interviews.

I did the Russell interview 'cos I'd quite like to meet him, and this seemed a better way of going about it then hanging around his house. I also liked the idea of him answering questions, which were quite fun to pull together.

This Bath Bankers chap...it's partially 'cos I am quite fascinated with pre-Pulp Russell. For someone who never seems quite...normal. The idea of him being at Uni, studying management, and then starting a band with 'friends'. It just seems odd, so I'm very curious! Also, this chap is proving good at filling in some details, giving details of the BB gigs, what songs they played, etc.

The research (non interview based) is 'cos I'm trying to get hold of stuff for the Portfolios. Early 80s Pulp and all that. To do that, one needs to do the research to track down people and then...be really nice to 'em!

A book on Russell would be fascinating, Jazza. I'd love to read it...but I'm not the one to write it!

Russell should really consider an autobiography. He could easily call it "The Will To Power"!

Weener/Sarah: Hanging 'round his house never worked out for me, sadly.

I wish Russell would finish those intriguing projects he starts - the board game based on the housing market in the '90s (imagine how prescient it would be now...he could have even updated it for the negative equity generation. Would have earned him a bit more than royalties from 'Hits') and that novel he was working on as recently as a couple of years ago. Presumably that's fallen by the wayside too.

I think that's another reason why I *heart* him. We both start so many projects, but finish few.

I have the opposite problem, I tend to finish stuff but spend far too long thinking about it and delaying before I get going.
