Have you ever made any Pulp-inspired "art"? I use the term art rather loosely in my own case.

1. I am a climate modeller and at a recent conference we were invited to produce a conference song to the tune of a well-known song of our own choice - the old conference song was so old and obscure no-one at this year's event had ever heard of it. My husband dutifully recorded my offering and put it on soundcloud. It's a bit technical in places given the specialist audience, but you'll get the idea, I hope none of you are too climate sceptical or I could be in trouble here!

2. A friend at church who, between himself and his wife have survived 3 life-threatening illnesses in the last decade, was telling us he felt his life was summed up by Edvard Munch's painting "The Scream". So we had an activity for everyone to express their own feelings about their lives through some kind of artistic creation. Here is mine - no prizes for guessing the source of my inspiration.

I've plagirised/'paid homage to' bits and bobs of Pulp in lyrics/music that I've recorded and released over the years. Nothing too specific, although I remember a track called 'Nightmare' coming a little too close to a certain B-Side.

Sorry, I have no idea what your inspiration for that is. Other than mis-shapes?

I was googling some pictures of Mark when I came across this portrait by Elizabeth Peyton from 1998.

Look at the fucking value!

Gorgeous pic though!

But, is that lump of clay how you see your life? Or just the recent shit that's been thrown your way?

I think that's more the price of Peyton than Webber!

And no, that's not an anti-Webber dig :)

You mean that portrait went for a quarter of a million dollars? What's the background story to this...why was little Mark the subject?

I may have made a few cursory glances towards Pulp in my own music..

Eamonn, Peyton sells for that much usually. Presumably she knows Mark from arty type stuff.

Shame he wasn't able to keep the painting, though!

I was taking an art studio course in college in 1996, when my Pulp obsession was at it's peak (one of several peaks, probably). Most of my pieces were Pulp-inspired; by the end of the course I think my TA was starting to get annoyed by my one-track mind, though there were at least some interesting discussions prompted by some of the pieces...the only one I remember was a "quilt" with repetitions of a pink glove, a tube of lipstick (I know, the lipstick/lipgloss thing has always bugged me, but a tube of lipstick looks so much better than a slimy tube of lipgloss), and 2 other images; I was pleased with it because it came out very pop-art-y

The song has always resonated really strongly with me and how I feel about my life. i don't fit in very well, I have never been interested in girly things for example, always been very geeky and sciencey, but I think I also felt looked down on for that, that something was wrong with me for not being interested in those things, it was more than just being a bit odd. So the sense that ultimately I would get revenge on these people and prove my worth also resonates with the song.

So the lump of clay was just meant to be a representation of the mis-shape idea of not fitting in really, simple square peg in a round hole idea. I think I included mostly circles with a few squares as there is improved understanding of some people being different these days, but I still find myself to be a triangle.

Nice paintings, I never cease to be amazed at the economics of the art market though. I would be really interested to see some of Twiggy's stuff too if that's possible.

If I kept anything (I probably did, I'm such a pack rat), it would be boxed up in my parents' garage. I might have a look when I'm over there for the holiday this weekend though

I was bored the other day so I drew this.

img060.jpg

I didn't have the original photo on me so I'm not sure if there is a great likeness (it's Russell btw) and he looks very rigid but...yeah...tada.

I have been drawing Russell and Steve quite a bit recently...personally I blame Stephen and Tricia

This looks like Russell from The Day That Never Happened - was that the intention?

Anyway, easily identifiable (even without the violin) so well done! Good use of background too :)

I can't draw/paint for toffee. But my fb profile pic used to be a pic I did on computer paint programme - a red heart on a black background with a big black hole in the middle (I was going to post it here, but can't figure out how to). Guess the Pulp song that inspired it? It's a bit embarrassing now that I had it as my profile pic for so long, but hey, I wasn't a very happy bunny at the time and at least I didn't 'draw' an image for the line that follows!

I was an art student and I think about half my work was inspired by Pulp. Luckily my professor was a fan too so our tutorials used to turn into dicussions about which was the best album. Here's two:

jarvis.jpgfashion.jpg

I'm currently working a Different Class era portrait of the whole band. I doubt I'll finish it for a while though since I'm concentrating on work that doesn't make me look like an obsessive fan...

I'm not much of an artist, but I had done a minimalist drawing of the mis-shapes single heads

tumblr_m7qceu9HfS1rt5upko1_400.png

my friend who is an actual art person did a thing where she took songs about men and drew them with women. She did one for "i'm a man" featuring some of the lyrics and a woman in suspenders. I really liked it. I'll see if I can find it/ask her about it.

Hadn't seen that pic of Russell and Justine Frischmann before. Two great hairstyles and popstars.

BTW Jazza, any news on when the Pulp live DVD is out? I imagine you're being kept in the loop due to your starring role, no?! :)

I can't paint to save my life, but my mother (an art teacher) is so painting me Mis-Shapes-hand in front of face-Jarvis for my Birthday biggrin

also, I'm currently experimenting with fabric printing (I make bags and things) so I will be printing some Jarvis's. That counts as art, right?

Ooh look what passed me by during my internet-less summer holiday. I'm really glad the thread has revived. I'm always amazed at how creative people are. Art (visual, music, whatever) never formed any part of my life except as a consumer/spectator until I met my husband, it was something I assumed I couldn't do and only a small number of specially talented people did. I'm still amazed so many people are so creative. I've come to realise the process of creation is easily as important as the final product. I put the art in the title in quotes as my own efforts wouldn't score very highly on the final product front, but they would fare a lot better on the process of creation scale.

Here is a very roundabout piece of Pulp-inspired art. On that great day last December, we went on our obligatory pilgrimage to the Graves Gallery to see the holy Damien Hirst painting, as seen previously on Blue Peter. We had a lovely afternoon, a great gallery not just in terms of the collection but also the presentation and the little bits of explanation that make such a difference to the whole experience, like the short biographies of the subjects of the old portraits. We particularly enjoyed the stairwell mobile and decided to make our own. Now our stairwell is rather cramped, but we have been slowly adding bits, the latest being the fimo fish that weight all the strings down.
