Good quote. I don't think it was quite as much of a cynical pop move as Calum outlines above. While Russell's songs have their oddball charm, it was probably obvious that Jarvis was a better vocalist/lyricist/frontman, and Russell's strengths were more as a guitarist/violinist, so as they moved forward that was the way the roles settled.
This is what I mean really, I didn't mean it in a calculated/cynical way, more subconciously, that the band naturally settled into roles. I think those roles settled in precisely because of their approaching commercial success/them becoming a serious band though.

Russell's vocals wouldn't have fitted the band's new sound. Even the spoken word parts in something like 'David's last Summer' wouldn't suit him. The question I have is why didn't he do any singing in Venini? I suppose he must've gone off it as much as he said.
