I'd forgotten that story, but it does sound quite likely. 'She's a Lady' generally sounds quite phenomenal live. It's still brilliant on record, but does lack that extra bite...

These are all good points about them not getting the right producer. A lot of people I knew back in the day weren't fans of Pulp until they ended up for various reasons seeing them live, and then they were blown away. For my sins, I've never heard the violin version of She's a Lady!

Saw, your speediness makes me embarassed about the tardiness with some of the stuff I get asked for!

I think Thomas was perfect for Different Class, maybe not so much for This Is Hardcore (about half of it)

It's due to the instrumentation used.

Whitfield Studios, London (June 2000) & Roundhouse Studios, London (July 2000)

Producer: Howie B

Songs recorded:

Bad Cover Version
and others

Jarvis Cocker: Megaphone
Candida Doyle: Xylophone
Steve Mackey: Epiphone
Nick Banks: Saxophone
Mark Webber: Methadone

The band were only allowed to use instruments that ended in 'one' that day!

Well, mainly 'phone', but I had to stretch it a little for my 'punchline' :) I was going to put Hawley last, but it seemed a little unfair given his past!

Just a couple of thoughts:

Chris Thomas would have nailed "After You". Roxy Music, anyone?

I would like to hear Scott Walker produce an album by someone else that sounds like "Tilt" or "The Drift" but I don't think their minds work that way (even Russell).

I have two songs he produced for Ute Lemper from the 5 Easy Pieces boxset. They are Scope J and Lullaby (by-by-by). have you heard those?

I have got them on a compilation somewhere. Can't remember what they're like so I must dig them out and have a listen!

I've a vague recollection of Jarvis saying in an interview that he didn't want "We Love Life" sounding anything like "Tilt". "I love all his albums but the last one is a bit weird" (or something). A bit????
