Yes Fred, For Real! They ripped the song choices of the new beautiful Suede deluxe CDs to shreds. He came on to defend them. And they ate him up. They wanted all the Neil Codling B Sides y'see. Brett wanted unreleased stuff. They didn't like the fact that Dog Man Star B Sides written by Richard Oakes. Brett thought the Oakes-era stuff should go with Coming Up. Fans didn't like that and took him to task for it.

Even horrid, petty things like slagging off the quality of his autograph on copies of the lyrics book he made available.

It made me feel very sorry for him, and I don't generally warm to him as a person anyway!

I know this is the wrong forum, but those suede deluxe cds are how deluxe cds should be. Wrong forum yes, but yeah suede fans are particularly gnarky - I guess they have passion - but being rude to Brett is really off. And they're still going on about Butler vs Oakes....

If Jarvis came on this forum I'd just want to say THANK YOU!

To be fair Fred, when Steven Havenhand comes onto this forum we say 'thank you'. I dread to think what the Suede fans would be like to someone in Suede like that!

And yes, I agree those Deluxe CDs are stunning.

Do we not have passion? :(

And don't we argue about Senior vs. Webber? Or is that just me?

We've got passion. And most of the time we use it well.

we do have passion, some of us travel to the other side of the earth to see that passion in a field....I suppose I worded it wrong. We're relatively polite about everything, like to explain our point of view, no c**nt calling - anyone even remotely connected to the band we certainly treat with respect and is how it should be. Like you said Brett Anderson is a polarising character, even after all these years of loving them, I dont think I would go up to him and say hey Brett, yada yada yada. However with Pulp, Ive been in Jarvis's ear a few times, took the mickey out of me twice, called me a bird once and I dont think any malice in it...

oh this thread was about fav albums so far of the year - yep Deep Sea Arcade still - you guys might like it. Also loving Grimes which could be mistaken for Enya (everything has to come full circle doesnt it....)...

Maybe we've just matured over time? I know that the old Pulp mailing list Lipgloss used to be pretty angry sometimes. And I've heard tales of this board's predescesor being similarly...difficult!

Jesus christ, and they are the super FANS?! You see, that's what I don't like- fans thinking that the music belongs to THEM, rather than to the musicians who originally created it.

Super-fans. Well, I suppose so in that, like us, they're the ones who are still 'keeping the faith' all these years after the band's commercial peak.

Suede fans I've met in person have always been pretty nice, but on forums/mailing lists etc. they've often been very abrasive. And angry.

I understand that, but at the same time, they should respect the artists wishes (as long as the artist isn't making desicions for the wrong reasons!). I'd be pretty gutted if, say, Pulp re-released WLL and didn't put After You on it, but I'd respect the bands descion not to, especially if they actually talked about why!

So is the Suede obsessive fanbase much bigger than this (relatively small) Pulp one?

I'm a very keen Suede fan, even to the extent of being a member of their fanclub in the mid 90's, and I don't consider myself abrasive or angry. Those reissues annoyed me because of the pretty rotten sound and I always presumed it was Bernard who didn't want young Oakes's songs on 'his' album Dog Man Star.

I suppose it's similar to if Different Class were rereleased and they shaved a minute or two off some not-very-popular B Sides in order to make room for more rare tracks. And then included two gigs, one of which had Russell as lead guitarist, and another had Mark Webber, but playing DC songs.

It's not a precise comparison really. I suppose it would be more similar to, instead of a TIH disc including 'Help the Aged' with Mark, it had V96 footage with Russell instead.

Suede fanbase seems about the same. Maybe slightly larger, and more people in further flung climes.

And more angry people.

It's funny, but of all the outtakes and demos from the WLL period it's After You that I think would sit most uneasily amongst the package. I actually wouldn't feel too bad about it being left off. It's out of kilter with the rest of the material they were recording at this time.

Yes, but it's an AMAZING song!!! Pulp's final huge pop single that never was. I agree that it wouldn't have really fitted well on the album, but collected along with some other tracks on a seperate disc, it's a must have.

I think the thing I like best about suede is their artwork (if that's not TOO backhanded!). That cover for the singles collection is brilliant. Are they about to kill each other or kiss each other?

The predecessor to this board was fine.  In fact, Pulp forums are by and large very civil, even the short lived ones, in comparison to pretty much every other forum I have been involved in.  I was told I had less morals than a drug dealer on one recently because I bought a cheap ticket for a gig off Viagogo no.

Got to add the new Bobby Conn album, Macaroni, to my list. Monica Boubou is my second favourite violinist after Russell. Would love to see what she could do to Pulp songs
