Jack White's new single kind of left me cold - it's full of the bluster he's good at but nothing new or as exciting as The White Stripes were til the last couple of albums. Alabama Shakes have been over-hyped as well, I reckon. Great voice, interesting look but the songs I don't find all that inspiring.
Haven't heard that many new albums of 2012 yet, just getting into Bloom by Beach House. Really great melodies and soundscapes.
Half of Lana Del Rey's debut was really good, the other half kind of cringeworthy. Her track Off To The Races and The Shins' comeback single Simple Song are my two favourite songs of the year so far. I quite like Marina and the Diamonds, must give her new one a listen too.
Oh and apparently Hawley is set for number 2 in the album charts on Sunday?!
Dexys will blow everything else out of the water with their comeback next month though. Can't wait.

I'd have bought blunderbuss on release but there were so many albums out at the same time (graham coxon, Damon Albarn, magnetic fields and more) that I ended up buying none of them.

It is in fact the only new album I've bought this year (not counting ones that have been out for years), so not sure if my opinion carries much weight, but it is a cracker.
The only other the album I've bought is a Jeff Buckley one (So Real). A spur of the ,moment act when I'd had a drink and decided to walk to my 24hr Tescos at 2am and buy some random stuff. The result was a Jeff Buckley cd for 3 quid, some fudge flavoured oastso and a half price lady razor. As you do. Was pretty impressed with the cd, but not so much the other two items.
Mines a band called Deep Sea Arcades - Outlands, A Sydney band who kind of have this 60's Soundtrack sound but in a 90s British guitar kind of way. A pretty album.
It's not an album but since we're sharing non-Pulp music I think it's worth a mention. The other day I stumbled across this - they're a little known band from Luxembourg and I think they are very good
Two albums spring to mind; Tales From The Barrel House by Seth Lakeman (I'm a closet folkie) and the ever remarkable Julian Cope's new album Psychedelic Revolution (which you can't buy in the shops, only from his website).
Poliça- Give You The Ghost. R&B inspired synth pop with two drummers! Much, much better than it sounds:
Also I've been enjoying the new Actress album, and the Sun Araw/Congos collaboration, but other than that, there isn't all that much I've enjoyed this year. Can't wait for the new Beach House album to come out though!
The best recent pop album/band I've heard in the past 12 months is probably "Help Stamp out Loneliness". Those of you who prefer HnH era Pulp might enjoy them:
Like Ian, the only albums I've bought this year are the Pulp reissues. So sad. You guys have reminded me of some albums I need to check out though. If only there were any record shops left in my neighborhood...
Gotta go with Guided By Voices, and maybe Leonard Cohen.... not listened to Air or Sigur Ros yet.... Heard a sneaky bit of some up-and-coming Low stuff and that is killer as always. Not sure whether it will be out before the years end though.
I'm enjoying Django Django's eponymous album, The Belbury Tales by Belbury Poly, Sweet Heart Sweet Light by Spiritualized (I think, weird production on that one) and the new tracks on King Creosote and Jon Hopkins' Diamond Mine Jubilee Edition
i love the new spiritualized album too ("sweet heart, sweet light")... glad someone else mentioned it here. just saw them on sunday in atlanta and they sounded amazing.
They're one of my favourite bands of all time and one of the few I've seen more than Pulp, but do you find the production a bit muddy on the new album? Not sure it works
I think it's a very strange sounding album altogether. I know people criticised Songs in A & E but (I liked it) but I think this one was a little disappointing. It seems to me that the general media reaction has been positive but methinks there's a whiff of Emperors New Clothes about it sadly.
One of the very few pieces of new music I've bought this year is the last Fall single (Night of the Humerons). It's not an album, but it is absolutely unlike anything ever made before by humans.
Oh, and the new Allo Darlin' is pretty good too. I think it's better than the debut, anyway...
I also imagine the Wind Up Birds album will be pretty good given their quality when they play live...
Ahem, sorry, he just reminds me of some rather pathetic kid I know who boasts at every opportunity in order to assert himself. I just can't stand that attitude.
It's slightly unpleasant to go about asserting your dislike that way though. Unless of course he was balls deep, but ONLY if it was that far. You've got to draw a line.
Oh yeah, Spiritualized is the best. Forgot because I was so pissed off the with mis-press of the white vinyl edition. They sent me a replacement and now its fine. Not only did they make this years best album, they're also top notch folk. The new bass player used to be in Starsailor (which is a shame)... he really brings it live, although Doggen played the bass on the album.
I heard about the vinyl controversy.. it's the CD I have a problem with! I've no problem with albums that sound deliberately raw, just not sure it works in this case.
Trying to piece together what happened here. It seems Calum has taken a dislike to Yankee for mentioning that he's heard some of the new 'Low' material before it's been released and that he thinks it's boastful?
Do correct me if I'm wrong!
I think that in this day and age, it's an awful lot easier to come across unreleased stuff than it used to be as people with a real interest in certain bands can often come across leaked stuff far earlier than previously. I was listening to the new Allo Darlin' album a couple of months before it came out, simply 'cos promo copies had made it onto Soulseek. Likewise the last Fall album. And several new Suede songs are also available out there for those who are interested.
I suppose it's like on t'Blur forum where people have been discussing the merits of "Under the Westway" which has only received an airing by Damon and Graham at a gig by the two of them. In the days pre-youtube, going on about how much you love this song and that you think it's amazing would have seemed really wankish as you're just boasting about the "Well, I was there" aspect of being at the gig. But when anyone with a Net connection can hear the thing on Youtube, it seems a little different.
So yeah, I don't think that it's particularly boastful to me mentioning such things in the way that Yankee did, really.
But maybe I've misread this entire situation! I only tried to piece it together 'cos I thought (with the post appearing just below mine) that I'd kicked something off!!

No no, Yankee KNOWS Low and has mentioned it unpromted a few times. Saying "i've heard new Low material" is just another way for him to say "i'm with the band!!" and it's just a bit boastful and annoying, especially as it's totally irellevant to this forum. I'm sure that we've all got stuff we could boast about if we wanted.
I'm not with the band, they're in MN and I'm here in the UK.
I come here to speak about music. I have heard some music that I think other people who like music might be interested to know I heard it and think it is good. If someone had heard some music by.. say.. I dunno, Arab Strap or Blur or something and I hadn't, I would be glad of their opinion. I couldn't give a shit if they know the band. If they know the band it makes more sense to me though, and that would be that.
Spiritualized are "top blokes". I don't particularly know them, I just met them a couple of times. I think it's a reasonable thing to say given the amount of shit I read about Spaceman around the internet. People can give opinions about people they never met, but if they share an opinion which they have personal experience of it is boastful?
I mentioned knowing low maybe a few times, just because in conversation if I am talking about their music which i love, it just comes out because its no big deal. One of the times it was when I was telling people what I was talking to Jarvis about. On other forums, people can talk about things like that cause it's normal to know people in life. Some people on the spiritualized forum know some people and some know others. It's good, we all talk about stuff like that as well as everything else and sometimes it can help us out. We can go to shows together and meet interesting people that the others know because they're into the same things. I know other people that some people on this forum might be fans of, or maybe they don't know who they are. I haven't mentioned them, because it didn't come into my mind talking about what I was talking about.
I will boast about Sergio Aguero scoring in the 94th Minute. That is all.
Not boastful to share an opinion, just boastful to continually reference that you know a band. And you HAVE referenced it quite a bit. But now we all know that you know Low, you can stop talking about it, and everyone can be happy.
At a stretch, it does kinda make sense for you to mention it in this context. Just sometimes you seem to blurt it out needlessly. Sorry, I don't mean to pick on you, I just know so many arrogant, boastful boys in their early twenties, it absolutely boils my blood, I just see red.
It doesn't bother me if you are trying to pick on me, honest. Haters gonna hate. I see plenty of stuff on here that I think "crikey, that's a bit shit" and just leave it be. I have far too much respect for the music people can make to try and score points out of knowing them a little. There's much to be said about people who feel the need to be negative on a public forum, especially towards one other specific member. Much to be said... I won't though.
The only thing I'd discuss from this is the assertion that "Spiritualized are "top blokes". I don't particularly know them, I just met them a couple of times." I have heard a lot of stories about Jason Pierce being more than 'a bit of an arse'. It's just from my own experiences of the few times that my path has crossed with that of Mark E. Smith (spoken to him twice, came to my clubnight once and saw my band play three times) I always found him to be very likeable and very polite. But I am well aware that I am likely very blinded by the fact that I think he's pretty amazing and the starstruckness aspect helps change my opinion.
I'm sure I wouldn't think "wow" at every elderly drunk staring STARING at my face when I'm trying to do a gig. But if it's someone you're a fan of, it's a bit different.
This isn't namedropping btw (or it's not intended to be!) just wondering how much our opinion of "this popstar is a nice person" are clouded by the fact that we already like them and *want* to be nice.
Although Darren Hayman could quite often be a right moody arse.
I really hesitate to go into why I found them to be "top blokes"... I'm off for a bit, I'm rather uncomfortable with this place now.
I will depart by expressing my opinion that if there is a new Kraftwerk album this year, there is a good chance it will be the best thing to hit our turntables in a while.
It wasn't me asking for an explanation - t'was just hypothesising on what I feel when meeting Famous Popstars and was wondering whether it likely to be the same for others.
Try not to stay away too long. This place ain't all bad :)
Well I hope I haven't upset you. All of my humour - crass as it was - was in your defence. Though reading over it, it might not seem that way. You referenced another band in a thread about other bands. Nothing wrong with that.
I've met Jason and he was great, we had a long chat and the only time he got arsey it was completely understandable as I told him I owned all his stuff but had to illegally download some of the early stuff! I did add there was no other way for me to get hold of it at the time, and bought most of it when the Complete Works were released not long afterwards!
This is indeed civilised! And mature, which is why what I felt was childish boasting got on my wick, I should have risen above it but sadly I do not possess that willpower. I like the way that everyone on here is very polite even when arguing. Most fan communities are full of pricks (anything to do with Morrissey or Belle & Sebastian, urrghhh, even some Blur fans are annoying), but I like the way that users of this board actually try and get stuff done (e.g. the We Love Life re-release, and when I tried to get everyone to put some money in to buy that 91' ITV performance). Doesn't really come to anything, but it's the thought that counts!
I agree - please don't feel like we're ganging up on you but that is the first time I have ever heard Low mentioned (still have no idea who they are) and cannot for the life of me see how Yankee was boasting with what he said
Jazza, try 'Death of a Salesman' by said band. Probably my favourite by them.
And I concur on the 'civilised' comments. Anyone ever seen the Suede forum? Jeez, they eat each other alive on there. And Brett too when he appears. Poor Brett. He deserves better fans!

Calum, I think you gotta man up and admit you were a bit in the wrong.
I think I'm just a bit more in tune to this (plus I've been around this forum for longer than you, Fred) but he's definitely mentioned him being friends with Low at least five times, probably more. It was just excessive, needless namedropping- it wasn't what he said in this thread, just the culmination of all the times he's gone on about them. I have a friend who knows Morrissey- he doesn't go around talking about it on unreleated internet message boards. In fact, I find that people who are genuinely friends with musicians, just see them as the normal people they are and as such feel no need to boast about knowing them.

Slightly ironically you have talked about having a tenuous link with knowing Morrissey, I find this amusing.

Err, that was kinda the point- we all have stuff we COULD boast about, but we choose not to.
Yes Fred, For Real! They ripped the song choices of the new beautiful Suede deluxe CDs to shreds. He came on to defend them. And they ate him up. They wanted all the Neil Codling B Sides y'see. Brett wanted unreleased stuff. They didn't like the fact that Dog Man Star B Sides written by Richard Oakes. Brett thought the Oakes-era stuff should go with Coming Up. Fans didn't like that and took him to task for it.
Even horrid, petty things like slagging off the quality of his autograph on copies of the lyrics book he made available.
It made me feel very sorry for him, and I don't generally warm to him as a person anyway!
I know this is the wrong forum, but those suede deluxe cds are how deluxe cds should be. Wrong forum yes, but yeah suede fans are particularly gnarky - I guess they have passion - but being rude to Brett is really off. And they're still going on about Butler vs Oakes....
To be fair Fred, when Steven Havenhand comes onto this forum we say 'thank you'. I dread to think what the Suede fans would be like to someone in Suede like that!
And yes, I agree those Deluxe CDs are stunning.
Do we not have passion? :(
And don't we argue about Senior vs. Webber? Or is that just me?

we do have passion, some of us travel to the other side of the earth to see that passion in a field....I suppose I worded it wrong. We're relatively polite about everything, like to explain our point of view, no c**nt calling - anyone even remotely connected to the band we certainly treat with respect and is how it should be. Like you said Brett Anderson is a polarising character, even after all these years of loving them, I dont think I would go up to him and say hey Brett, yada yada yada. However with Pulp, Ive been in Jarvis's ear a few times, took the mickey out of me twice, called me a bird once and I dont think any malice in it...
oh this thread was about fav albums so far of the year - yep Deep Sea Arcade still - you guys might like it. Also loving Grimes which could be mistaken for Enya (everything has to come full circle doesnt it....)...
Maybe we've just matured over time? I know that the old Pulp mailing list Lipgloss used to be pretty angry sometimes. And I've heard tales of this board's predescesor being similarly...difficult!

Jesus christ, and they are the super FANS?! You see, that's what I don't like- fans thinking that the music belongs to THEM, rather than to the musicians who originally created it.
Super-fans. Well, I suppose so in that, like us, they're the ones who are still 'keeping the faith' all these years after the band's commercial peak.
I understand that, but at the same time, they should respect the artists wishes (as long as the artist isn't making desicions for the wrong reasons!). I'd be pretty gutted if, say, Pulp re-released WLL and didn't put After You on it, but I'd respect the bands descion not to, especially if they actually talked about why!
So is the Suede obsessive fanbase much bigger than this (relatively small) Pulp one?
I'm a very keen Suede fan, even to the extent of being a member of their fanclub in the mid 90's, and I don't consider myself abrasive or angry. Those reissues annoyed me because of the pretty rotten sound and I always presumed it was Bernard who didn't want young Oakes's songs on 'his' album Dog Man Star.
I suppose it's similar to if Different Class were rereleased and they shaved a minute or two off some not-very-popular B Sides in order to make room for more rare tracks. And then included two gigs, one of which had Russell as lead guitarist, and another had Mark Webber, but playing DC songs.
It's not a precise comparison really. I suppose it would be more similar to, instead of a TIH disc including 'Help the Aged' with Mark, it had V96 footage with Russell instead.
Suede fanbase seems about the same. Maybe slightly larger, and more people in further flung climes.

It's funny, but of all the outtakes and demos from the WLL period it's After You that I think would sit most uneasily amongst the package. I actually wouldn't feel too bad about it being left off. It's out of kilter with the rest of the material they were recording at this time.

Yes, but it's an AMAZING song!!! Pulp's final huge pop single that never was. I agree that it wouldn't have really fitted well on the album, but collected along with some other tracks on a seperate disc, it's a must have.
I think the thing I like best about suede is their artwork (if that's not TOO backhanded!). That cover for the singles collection is brilliant. Are they about to kill each other or kiss each other?
And I've heard tales of this board's predescesor being similarly...difficult!
The predecessor to this board was fine. In fact, Pulp forums are by and large very civil, even the short lived ones, in comparison to pretty much every other forum I have been involved in. I was told I had less morals than a drug dealer on one recently because I bought a cheap ticket for a gig off Viagogo .
Got to add the new Bobby Conn album, Macaroni, to my list. Monica Boubou is my second favourite violinist after Russell. Would love to see what she could do to Pulp songs
