The below arrived in the post today, courtesy of Paul Mills (who put the Premspeak tapes together).

Now you know why I was looking for advice on transferring tapes to computers!

The items are on loan, and are (in the case of the gigs) the master tapes. To be honest, I don't *entirely* know what versions some of these tracks are. But I'm gonna have fun finding out!

But yes, those are missing Rockwells tracks.

These tracks will all hopefully be with the rest of you as quickly as I feasibly can.

Exciting!

I guess 'These Hands' is actually There's No Emotion.

Will, I'm presuming so too. Remember that Paul was going to gigs a lot when there weren't records to be bought! He'll have decided on titles himself, I suppose. Much like we did many years ago with stuff like 'Respect Her Reject Her' before Mark found out it had been called 'Repressive Forkout'.

Also note that the Maze Tape hardly has any tracks identified.

God knows what's on the Rockwells one, though. I'm leaving that 'til last :)

On the Rockwells tape, I wonder which Maureen it is at the start? Sudan Gerri is likely. But it could also be the Bad Maureen version, which would be really interesting. Coy Mistress is after it, which comes from the Bad Maureen Demo.

Anyway, Stephen, I'm sure you're going to have fun finding out.

Nice one! And you were worried the other night about him not getting back to you about it! What an impressive haul...I don't suppose he included the songs he wrote with Jarvis, did he (that is the same Paul Mills..right?)?

And are they two previously uncirculated interviews or is one of them the one from just before Freaks came out? Liking, ''Knights of Suburbia'' too.

Will - no idea. But yes, look forward to finding out! Given that Paul put out Maureen on Premspeak though, it seems likely to be the 'normal' version. And presumably 'Coy Mistress' has come from the 'Beware the Bacon Slicer' comp. We'll see.

Currently working with the 'least' interesting of the tapes thus far - the bottom right one. A beautiful, warm (vinylly!) version of Tunnel, and a similarly great Manon have been transferred thus far. I'm going to have to change the bitrate though. Tunnel's gone across as half a gig! There's a bit of tape hiss which is frustrating, but that's just what happens, I suppose.

Oh, and 'Nights' on that tape appears to be, again, the usual version.

And Eamonn, I'm afraid I was a bit naughty - when I answered you I had already been told they were in the post. Just didn't want to count my chickens!

The Jarvis & Paul songs should still exist, but he didn't have them to hand at the time. Hopefully they'll follow at some point!

I'll let you know on the ints.

The interview on this first tape is just a section of the BBC Sheffield one (for those hoping for something else!)

Also, one way of reading the inlay for the Rockwells tape is that the setlist is as follows:

Simultaneous
Back in LA
Tunnel
They Suffocate at Night
The Mark of the Devil
Little Girl
Anorexic Beauty
Maureen
Blue Glow
There's No Emotion

No Hurry Up Harry then!

I transferred the bottom left tape last night and have listened to snippets. The Jarvis & Russell interview seems to have been recorded just after the Limit 3/3/87 gig (as in 'later on that evening'!). That gig's also included on this tape. Also, the 'They Suffocate at Night' mentions appears to have been an airing on the (local?) radio, introduced as it is by a cheery presenter. Who was probably rather less cheery when it finished!

If it's the same interview Paul sent me, I dated it to late Nov / very early Dec 1986 - isn't there a mention at some point of the 100 Club gig being "next week"?

Mark,

I've only listened to snippets of the interview yet and want to save it for when I'm not trying to get ready for work so's I can enjoy it! I'll write up whatever conclusions I can draw from it. I'd presume the interview is the same one that you've got as it's written that it's out-takes from Premspeak. Paul's keen to make the Premspeaks available as soon as he works out a way of sending the massive files to me! I've told him of sendspace already, so we'll see...

I read the Rockwells tape in a similar way. Although obviously one does, of course, want it to contain What Do You Say? and Everybody's Problem. It's quite a standard fare setlist, bar the two most exciting songs that have already been circulated. Still, it's always nice to hear another 'Anorexic Beauty'. And 'Blue Glow' too I suppose!

Cutcopy, I think the main way in which Paul wants to be appreciated is by this revitalising interest in his original Premonition Media/Premspeak project (which he still wants to get digitally distributed at some point) and also by getting a bit of interest in his mid 80s band of Pulp contemporaries who are reuniting this year to play some 25th anniversary gigs. Will duly provide links when next at a computer!

50% done! Finished chopping and saving Tape two, which contains the Limit gig, an interview and other things.

Highlight from the interview thus far is...

Well Russell, you've now made it through into a second line-up of the band. Does this make you integral to Pulp?
(laughs) Not really. I'm just a session musician.

The interview is over half an hour long, and *none* of it made it onto Premspeak! The Premspeak stuff was recorded at the same time, but I only have this 30 minutes of offcuts!
