The main thing is, he obviously no longer plans to end the band soon, otherwise the question would have just been dismissed. An album could take years the way they do things, but it just means i can stop worrying that every gig may be their last.

calumlynn... But why would it follow the same pattern as it did before ? Why couldn't Jarvis bring at least bits of melody to the band. Why does it have to be exactly the same? Things have changed, time has changed, they have changed, he's made a solo career inbetween, dont forget that. Maybe the power balance in the band has changed as well. I'm not saying he's bringing completed songs to the band, but anything's possible.

It's been ten years since they last recorded together, so you, i, we should think about them as different band. Maybe Jarvis has been saving songs (or ideas) for years thinking "this is for Pulp"... why not ? Maybe the others did as well. Ten years is a long time for a musician, they could be in a completely different state of mind about recording stuff. Maybe they hit a creative time and wrote quickly this time... Didn't Jarvis wrote the lyrics for DC in a night or something ? As a musician, i can write 10 songs in 10 days which i'll think are good enough and nothing for a year after that. Anything is possible with music.

It's all speculation, that's for sure. But what i know for a fact, after years and years of reading interviews and news, is that bands tend to lie about their plans, and usually, when they say nothing concrete is on the table but agree to answer "THE" question after months of basically not communicating, then there's good hope something is going on. Maybe not an album, but something more than just playing Babies and Disco 2000. I've been stating facts and bits about this on this forum for the past months in various threads, people thinking i was mad and look where we are now, Jarvis is saying that stuff... He didn't let slip this comment by accident. It's coming right after their first gig of the year where he hinted at a uk tour, just before the US tour... It's a teaser and he knew it would be picked by the NME and all the mainstream media.

My verdict: new songs being played at rehearsal, not recorded but probably demoed. Album in 2013 ;)

He never had the intention to end the band, he's playing us (you). They've been reunited what, a year and half now, of course there's already new material being rehearsed, even recorded. It's a long time for a band to be together without new material.

When Jarvis makes a comment, read one step further. So: ideas for songs = Songs ready for live / record. I suppose there will be some kind of announcement regarding new material to go with a UK tour or something...

What makes you so sure Andy? I don't mean that in a rude way, just wondering if you know something we don't. I know there may be some stringing along of us fans happening but I wondered if they considered ending things after Electric Picnic. They could have reconvened to see what the consensus was and Russell declining might have made them wonder before deciding to o for it

They need to complete the Masters/Intro trilogy.

How long have The Pixies been back together now without putting out any new stuff?

It does seem that they will (perhaps have been) planning the release of new material. Why would Russell have left if all they were going to do was to do a few more gigs?

Also, why would they agree from the start to do an album, only for Russell to say, "well I'll do a few and then leave just as you're working on the new album". He's awkward but I don't think he's that bad. I think this has all been decided after the reaction to last summer

LA Ex, the Pixies did manage the wonderful 'Bam Thwok', but even that was quite a few years ago now I think...!

I think from Candida's resounding 'No' in the Lemacq interview that they weren't planning on writing new music from the off, but Russell still did the concerts in the UK even though he didn't travel to Australia. Now he's not doing those either so it seems to me like something changed (hehe).

I have been sceptical, though not as much as calumlynn, about them writing and recording again particularly as when I saw his talk at Cheltenham in October Jarvis seemed fairly clear that a few shows in the spring would be the end of it. That has already sprouted legs with the reunion extending into July at least.

And Andy makes a very good point here. Jarvis is notoriously tentative when talking about this type of thing, often understating facts. This and dixie's tip-off from a few weeks back make me think something concrete may be afoot (well, under foot...tumbleweed..)

Yeah I'd agree with this, and I don't mean to come across as a killjoy when everyone is happily fantasising about new Pulp albums, but there seems to definitely be some naievety regarding the way that bands write and record.

Jarvis was talking about HIS personal song ideas, which could have the potential to develop into Pulp songs in the future. It's AMAZING news that he's open to Pulp doing new stuff, but Andy I'm afraid from that little piece of news to draw the conclusion that Pulp already have new songs ready... that's barmy. Have Pulp ever been the sort of band to "jam new songs in soundcheck", really? All their records have been quite slow and deliberate developments and progression from their previous material. The whole band were so, so nervous about reforming, I'd say it's incredibly unlikely that we'll see any new material until it's 100% completed, and it CERTAINLY wouldn't be rushed.

Remember, there were three years in between Different Class, TIH and WLL, then five years until Jarvis and another three years before we got Further Complications. And that's when Pulp/Jarvis were in full "properly being a band/solo artist" mode. The reunion seems to be going better than anyone expected, but to make the jump from a temporary reunion to a real band who record and release and do huge promotional cycles lasting a couple of years is a massive, massive leap.

I'm not trying to burst anyones bubble, I just want to present a different (I would say slightly more realistic) point of view. I hope, just as much as anyone, that we'll see new material, and maybe they'll prove me wrong and there'll be a new album by the end of the year, but I'd say that, going on the evidence, we're going to be waiting for quite a while.

For me, they have all seemed "super-worried" about this whole thing from the beginning, as it says in this interview, and are really feeling their way very cautiously, not stringing fans along but really not knowing how much mileage there is in it, but also seeming surpirsed and excited by how well it has turned out so far and propelled along by lots of love and good vibes.

I seem to be offered ShortList every Thursday morning when I come out of Tottenham Court Road tube, but not today - typically! Luckily one of my work colleagues had picked up a copy for me and it was waiting on my desk! Happy days.. :)

Last week sometime Stuart Maconie quoted a tale of Richard Hawley's about when he was on a walking holiday with Jarvis, I think it must have been some fairly hot, deserty bit of America somewhere and he turned up in flip-flops and a baseball hat ...

Stephen, I just meant they could do another set of non-album EP's and singles like with Intro and Masters then compile them into an album if/when they have enough songs. This would take the pressure off having to record a whole album, they could just take it one step at a time. And it would probably avoid the pressure of a big comeback album.
