Britpop Fact.

Everyone knows about the great Blur/Kinks collaboration when Damon Albarn and Ray Davies played 'Waterloo Sunset' on the White Room (and Ray then began playing Parklife and made Damon join in).

But what form did the Pulp/Kinks collaboration take?

Perhaps you're referring to the cover version of Lola that Jarvis played on 12 March 2008 at La Trastienda Club in Buenos Aires?

Mark. The Pulp members are more famous, but the Kinks member less famous.

Superchob, I'm afraid Russell forgot to bring any records to give out as prizes, but you can have his pendant.

(I've just watched the '85 live gig for the first time. I saved it for when in need of cheering up and it did the job).

Well, I do know one of the credited "programmers" on Different Class and I think also This is Hardcore is one Mark Haley. And there was also a Mark Haley who played keyboards (live shows only) for the Kinks between '89 and '93.

But, somehow, I don't think this is what you had in mind.

The main track I was thinking of is "That Boy's Evil" on which Mark Haley did the main programming along with Jarvis & Steve.

Thus Mike, you win the Cadbury's Creme Egg.

(I told you it was trivia)

PS although 'live only' he was a bona fide Kinks member. Unfortunately as he joined just after their '89 album and left just before their '93 album, he's less known than some of the other 80s members...

 The Kinks were never a "Dead End Street" for me. Though I must admit, "You Really Got Me" with this tricky quiz question. I was scratching my head "Till the End of the Day". 


Whilst Steven must have been "Tired of Waiting for You" to come up with the answer, I for one am glad you finally "Set Me Free".

"Everybody's Gonna be Happy", I'm quite sure of that.

Eamonn, I did used to do archival stuff. But it did begin to hurt my hands after a while. The police archive lived in very cold rooms. However, they were so far removed from the every day running of the building that I was able to work on songs in there!

Mike, Mark Haley always intrigued me. His website is engagingly naff and has him as "ex-Kinks and ex-Monkees" and, whilst you can have umpteen Kinks, there really are only ever going to be four Monkees...

Fredthe3rd. My favourite ever potential pub quiz question of "Who was the longest lived ruler of Britain" will sadly become invalid later this year. Unless the Queen becomes invalid. Thus I will never finish writing the pub quiz of my dreams.

I once played the stylophone in a pub-quiz music round. And, as it happens, one of the songs was All Day and All of the Night.

Nobody managed to get my rendition of Sweet Child of Mine though. Admittedly, its riff was played at about one-fifth of the usual tempo...

Stephen, I remember that Haley website. He was a touring keyboardist for the Monkees during one of their '80s reunion tours before he joined the Kinks, I think.

His Kinks tenure supposedly ended when he and Dave Davies got into a huge fight in between the regular set and encore of a show. Next day, he faxed his resignation to Ray.

Mike. How very informative! I believe the chap he took over from, Ian Gibbons, had quit due to the Kinks diminishing level of success since he'd joined in 1979.

Needless to say, Ian Gibbons' own subsequent lack of success mean that he ended up replacing Mark Haley. And later joining The Kast Off Kinks tribute act.

I wonder how many Kinks members left due to Dave Davies' behaviour? Mick Avory is another...

Interesting. Ive only recently got into the 80s Kinks so wasn't aware of him. Some their late 70s and 80s songs reminds me a bit of Pulp. State Of Confusion is an amazing album!

I love the "hard rock sound" of that album! Every song is good on there. I grew up listening to their 60s stuff but the likes of Heart Of Gold, Property and Cliches Of The World are far superior in my opinion

I loved State of Confusion as a youngster. It's still good if you can ignore the hard rock sound.

The song 'Low Budget' is very Pulp too. And 'State of Confusion' itself isn't a million miles away from 'Live On'...

I do like Cliches of the World. Had entirely forgotten that song! I used to have 'State of Confusion' on the original cassette and it got played a lot in my car many years ago.

 Is that not really easy? Queen Vicky right? Or is this a QI type situation? Will Queen Victoria start flashing on the screen (ahem) and you'll cry "Woahh!" in a deep plumby voice.

And the question won't become invalid, it'll just have a different answer.
